There's a subtle thing this game does very well with the sprite art. I like how the enemies have this smug look that turns into an expression of helpless shock when they touch your bomb blast. Since it takes some work to score a kill, it makes it feel very rewarding
As a kid, I had a 96 games in 1 cartridge, and a friend of mine was REALLY fond of this Bomberman game. He'd come to my house every week to play it. He never finished it, tho, and my mom ended up forbidding him from coming back after a while due to how frequent it was. I have no idea how he is today, but I wonder if he ended up being a Bomberman master.
I don’t know if this is part of the Japanese game, but I know in the US release, the idea is that you’re going through the floors of a tower - and any robot who can do that becomes human. So when you beat Lv. 100, you get a screen telling you, “Bomber Man becomes Runner”. It’s a nice nod and a way to tie two great series together.
I do remember playing the NES version a little bit. didn't see much after that minus '93 on PCE via Wii Virtual Console and as recently as this year imported the amazing Saturn version.

the speed up powerup is actually permanent here, and also the timer in the bonus stages doesn't slow down, but the game speed is.
Those little balloon guys must be the "floaters."
Apparently. Which means the Lode Runner’s name is Eric, I guess.
This was my first Bomberman, and my favorite part was using the Game Genie to turn on invincibility so I could do infinite explosions all the time.

My first NES taste back in the day :,)
