    This morning it came to my attention that I have never seen an archeologist in the flesh. I wonder if they even exist. There aren't any archeologists in my family. My friends don't know any archeologists. I've never crossed paths with one. I feel I have better odds of meeting a martian than a an archeologists. Why are archeologists in hiding?

      We fear reprisals from all the art historians who we have made fun of over the years.

      @@jazzyfir Sure! It wouldn't count towards the major in college, but it gives you a great appreciation of ancient cultures, especially if the art history class spends a lot of time on the old stuff.

    I'm currently 16 and want to get onto archeology especially in the ancient Mediterranean, do you think there will still be jobs in the academic world by the time I graduate university?

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Of course! It's just that there aren't that many, and you have to go into the academic world with that knowledge. The more you focus and are clear on the possible jobs out there, the more successful you will be.

    I have two questions: for the archaeologist professor jobs typically which would a masters degree suffice or would you have to achieve the doctorate? For the Parks Archaeologist, does the job have a specific job title or is it just a national/state park archaeologists?

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are almost always better off in the professor world if you have a PhD (most professor jobs require it). If you want to be a professor, think PhD. For Parks archaeology, there are different job titles and ranks, and National/State are two different bureaucratic entities. I would tend to recommend a Master's degree for that world.

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It varies a lot. In local archaeology, a starting salary would be around $20 an hour (but would go up over time). For a college professor, you would start at around 60 grand a year (again, these numbers vary a lot depending on which state you live in, etc).

    I'm 17 and looking at going to university for biochemistry and then going into archaeological chemistry from there, do you think that's a good plan?

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! I don't know what archaeological chemistry would exactly entail (I'm guessing like working in a carbon 14 lab?) but it sounds like an excellent plan. Make sure to take intro to archaeology and some other basic anthro courses (like cultural anthro) along the way. You can always call a C14 lab and ask them what they like to see in an employee (explain your situation - I think they would be really happy to talk!).

    So if I wanted to work in the Yucatan on Mayan ruins, would I have to enter that academic world?

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Archaeology is a very regulated discipline (as it should be). You can always volunteer for an archaeology field school in the area (you will have to pay for it). That is often a great entry into the field.

    Would you say these percentages are the same in the nautical/maritime archaeology world?

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. The marine archaeology world is much worse! For me, I tend to think of underwater archaeology as something you can do when the situation presents itself - it is very difficult to be a "full time" marine archaeologist. There are exceptions to this rule, but it's rare.

      Take an intro to archaeology class. That will fulfill your social sciences credit that is needed no matter what you do. Once you do that, you can always continue to take more anthropology/archaeology classes and see if it truly is your passion. If it is, go for it! You have one life.

      Tough question - I'm sure it would be possible, but would require advanced degrees (like MA's and/or PhD's) unless all you would like to do is be a part of a field school. You may want to learn about the archaeology of India first, and then add other interests as you come across them - India has some pretty great stuff!
