Thank you for the talk! Let me know if you want to talk about anything
you have no idea how much this talk helped me, I've had similar things happened to me in my childhood, and I didn't even realize I was suppressing my emotions. The analogy to colors really opened my mind. Thank You.
You're amazing
Thanks for doing this healing Dr. Alok!
You have a new subscriber. I spent a lot of my early years researching religion and landed on Buddhism after reading Hinduism. I really enjoyed Hinduism. I read the Bhagavad Gita translation by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada Paramansa but didn't feel like I'd be welcome in that religion because it's so ancient and established in an engrained culture, much like the Abrahamic ones I was raised in. I liked Gautama's approach of not trusting him but finding out for oneself. Reading Jiddu Krishnamurti felt like stripping the theology from Hinduism and analysing the core concepts. He helped me a lot. I would say he saved my life ultimately. You remind me of that approach. Thank you for doing this.
At 1:39:47, how do you spell the name of that text you're talking about?
Dr K: You don't need to use examples we are both clear spoken
Destiny: *Uses an example to explain why he is using examples.*
I've picked up the use of, "Can I just think for a second" ever since being introduced to Dr. K. It's just extremely calming to know that you don't have to speed-think every response in a conversation. It gives you time to really formulate your thoughts.
OMG. I am listening to this interview and 45 mins in. I was thinking how secure you must be in your intelligence to not be in a hurry to seem like a smart ass by thinking of a quick response. Something I am definitely going to apply in life going forward.
ME TOO. It's actually such a good deal. Has the added benefit of making someone feel special because you're taking the time and care enough to spend time thinking about what they said.
im too afraid of looking like a dummy who doesnt have a response to do that
the problem for me is if i ever do this, .5 seconds in i start to panic that i havent thought of something already and start meta thinking about it and get nowhere
@do oby yea thats usually where it goes

Destiny speaking with this guy was such a positive experience and breath of fresh air. There was no name-calling, no interrupting, no strawmen, no gish-galloping, no unfounded accusations and no feels-over-reals. I loved every second of this. Please speak to him again soon!
Well usually smart people talk this way in a conversation. But when you have retarded streamers with autism screaming their fragile opinions theres no way something good would come out of it
Yeah but what was the point of his discussion with him? It hardly seemed like a discussion about mental health. He didn't seem like he has an issue with his mental health that needs to be addressed.
They weren't in an argument though. The entire conversation was based off a healthcare professional trying to understand somone else's mind not two people with conflicting opinions trying to convince the other that their opinion was correct
@@Netherlag1 It seems his behaviours were connected to experiences for him and he learned that he will likely be missing out on normal relationships because of that.

Right! If you put yourself in Destiny's shoes as we all can relate in a certain way, then I think we all can benefit from this free therapy session.
Do anyone have the book name that he recommends destiny in the first 10min ?
People need to realize that therapy is similar but not this. Therapy is more about trying to fix things while this was more about analysis. They didn't have any real goal in mind, which you should have for therapy.
Destiny failed a Turing Test in this debate.

That’s what all good therapists do. Have you never had a good therapist? It can be hard to find one you click with but when you do, this is exactly the sort of conversation you should expect. :)
@@dsokoll9184 I'm not sure why you'd even assume they've ever had a therapist at all
@@hargre77 lol I thought the same thing 😂
@@hargre77 Probably because the vast majority of people should see one, and perhaps they're from a state or country where it's significantly less stigmatized than wherever you live. And when I say the vast majority of people should see a therapist, I really mean it. So many people, a lot of them men but women too, are walking around with tons of mental disorders and negative feelings eating away at them. By media and their surroundings they've been led to believe that seeking psychiatric help is something only crazy people have to do, and they're not crazy, so obviously they should just let it fester and tear their lives apart when they're 40 like everyone else does... Rather than actually addressing their problems and getting help.
Edit: In my experience, growing up in poor areas and financial situations, and thus having dealt with A LOT of mentally ill people (including myself and my family) Its the ones who claim they don't need or want anything to do with therapy that are ALWAYS the ones who need it the most.

Edit: Also, I already knew this, but this video really demonstrated just how smart Alok really is. At the start, Destiny told him how he doesn't really have much appreciation for the more spiritual aspects of teaching, and almost from that point on everything Alok said was super empirical. This is a really interesting contrast between some of the conversations he's had with Devin. Amazin.
Aaaaaamazin.
That amazin made me like this comment
The use of stimulants...
He also found a way to work it in, after having gained his respect, and kept it to an empirical explanation and perspective. Like, you don't need to believe in the religious aspect to appreciate the moral of the story. Which is extremely true.

Destiny was repeatedly abstracting the conversation about him, whilst the doctor was attempting to personalize it & get at a specific understanding of Destiny. Dr. Kanojia did a good job of navigating Destiny's defenses to meet him where's he's at.
Destiny wouldn't wear a sparkly pink dress in this debate.
I don't like how my legs would look in a dress is way more superficial than saying fuck wearing a dress.
@@CevicheTheory The point of Destiny using the "fuck wearing a dress" example is that it is expected of him as a male (they were talking about falling into groups around this time) to not wear a dress. He's saying it's less superficial to not wear a pink dress because it wouldn't benefit you (ugly color, ugly legs) rather than not wearing it simply because the larger "male" group says it's gay.
@@exmo7 It's easier to go to "what would my group think?" instead of "divorced from any group, what do I think?" but most people can't carve out a socially secure existence without keeping up with the Joneses.
So Destiny's definition of a deep thought process may be valuing more than just what's immediately/obviously important to you.
Maybe, he could be throwing out the immediately important concerns entirely and that doesn't seem like something most people have the luxury to do.
@@biglollol Spot on.
@@exmo7 So Destiny's internal self just happens to align solely with male fashion of the current zeitgeist? The question individualists like Destiny fail to ask is how did I develop this sense of self? Why do all my interests tend to align with the current gender I was assigned to or the current x social construct?Psychological research finds time and time again we think we are acting as our authentic selves the more and more we conform to archetypal roles. In asking the question "why wouldn't I wear a pink dress" and finding the answer "I dont like the colour pink," Destiny failed to ask the further question, "Why don't I like the colour pink?" When we realize we are all mirrors of external phenomenon this facade of this authentic internal individual dies

Had a bad LSD trip when I was 18. Totally life shattering. Changed everything. Been sober for 10 years now. What the doc said between 1:19:06-1:20:00 is what I've been saying for years and it feels really good to have it scientifically stated and affirmed.
I used it and loved it, zero regrets, I was doing shrooms before starting at the lowest dose and working my way up and learned so much about myself. I loved spending my time in between those moments walking alone at parks and thinking about life, I miss those days.
You pretty much never hear those stories with ayuasca, it seems, it least in my personal experience, that practically 100% of people who go through the process feel it was a positive experience. This makes me think the problem is not the drug but the lack of structure around it.

Destiny got paid for getting therapy in this debate. Wait....what if we just paid people to get therapy?!?!?!??!
government subsidized therapy isn't a bad idea given the widespread depression tbh, it could be profitable for the economy.
Would go against the market lel
Meh Adderall is fine, sure it can be abused but I have known so many people who take it whenever they need a boost and never have developed any-type of harm from it or become junkies. Sure it CAN be bad, but lets not compare it to the opioid epidemic. Now if you want to say that kids should not be given Amphetamines then yeah I agree.
@Shawn Brink subsidized doesn't equal getting paid for it..
Shawn Brink I said paying people to go to therapy goes against the market. If it didn’t people would be getting paid for it right now, which they aren’t. I guess you are allergic to any critique of markets idk what your problem is trying to debate in a TH-cam comment section lol

The most fascinating aspect of sociopaths is the ease with which they are able to fool seasoned experts.
Sociopathy arises from childhood trauma. Destiny didn't really have traumatic experiences, just a less warm childhood than most people. That creates a persona that seems sociopathic, but nowhere near as extreme as an actual sociopath.
@@adamcummings20 ...what? You can't know whether or not some has had traumatic experiences based on what happened to them, whether or not something is traumatic depends on how the person felt during it. It's about how sensitive they are. You have people who can get raped without any serious long-term effects, and you have people who develop crippling lifelong problems because they embarassed themselves in public as a kid. Its what you would expect from a guy who went to India became a monk, then went on to become a Harvard Med School student and work at literally the second best hospital in America. He truly cares about his job and its a breath of fresh air to see people like him. If you havent you should watch the one he did with Reckful, that resonated with me so much and it was incredibly powerful. Its sad that he passed away to suicide though, I cant imagine how Dr K is feeling.
"I think you are emotionally suppressive", then Destiny proceeds in an emotionally suppressive manner.
56:20 I have a similar story.
My mother worked as a chandelier assembler for some number of years when I was a kid. She brought my brothers and I to a showing they did where a whole bunch of them were assembled.
One of the assembled chandeliers was the size of a car and was suspended over a couch. I noticed that the chain holding it to the ceiling was only like 5 links long. I asked why it had such a small chain while other smaller chandeliers had such long chains.
My mother praised me by saying "Wow that was a really good question." I was over the moon at how she had acknowledged my inquisitive nature. That's part of the reason I remember it to this day 13 years later.
@@askers_ Do you have a similar story?
WHAT'S THE REASON
Ended up here because of the all poki drama coverage. Didn't expect 2 vids later it would lead me to something actually interesting, and worth my time.
The psychedelic part reminds me of the quote “beware of knowledge that you didn’t earn”
It's like learning flamethrower without ever ember. You're gonna burn everything around you down
@@richardtickler5067 thats a stupid comment
I think that the analogy would be to learn flamethrower earlier than it was supposed to be. The word beware can be tricky.
My God, I wish my therapist and psychiatrist were as good as this guy. Really interesting talk.
Aqua Necromancer ikr any I’ve been with seem like idiots that are less qualified as I am lol they bring no info to the table
I’ve only been to one in my life. And he was fantastic. Usually when it comes to bad therapist, usually you are not comfortable or not willing to open up. You gotta be willing to listen.
I don't know if this will be hashed out the way I view it, but what the psychiatrist is trying to get at is: many people think through their thoughts and believe to be rational so why would you specifically have such a duality of public perception?
Destiny's answer doesn't seem to capture his situation. The difference between Destiny and most people is that he's willing to be honest in every situation no matter the social context/consequence. This is something most people consciously or subconsciously avoid. They would think of the group context and think through that lens even if temporarily and they may give a different answer in a different group mean while they maintain the feeling of consistency within themselves just as a given of surving in a social world.
These are like group calibrated overton windows. So you can have unique views within a certain constrain but you don't cross a certain boundary that's considered part of the walls the group identity is held underneath.
To put it another way, more complex people (not necessarily intelligent) may be nuanced in their heads, but in practice their beliefs switch off and on. This mechanism that seems disingenuous is actually saving a lot of people grief because it's the bedrock of social cohesion. When you are truthful all the time though, then people's categorical thinking will be in full swing and the more nuanced you are, you'll fall prey to mischaracterisation. Partly because people are more used to unified identities as well.
I don't always agree with Destiny, but this characteristic is the main reason why I maintain respect and interest for him. The core principle is to be more or less honest all the time - while adhering to pretty solid rules of epistemic rigor.
false, if destiny were honest inevery situation no matter the social context/consequence then he would be honest in explaining why he says a hard R nigger instead of saying it was an accident.
Are you saying Destiny is honest 100% of the time or am I misinterpreting that? Because you'd have to be delusional to believe that
@@trainerchappo1233 just to be clear, are you claiming to know the "real" reason?
@@trainerchappo1233 Did you miss the entire week long discussions about the n-word in private? Because he was very fucking clear on his position despite the huge amounts of backlash he got. If he, in a particular situation, said that his usage of nigger was an accident, then he only said that because he holds the view that it's not something he should publicly use.
@@BestAtNothingVR Nobody is, were humans after all, but he certainly is a lot more fucking honest than most people. You'd have to be delusional if you DON'T believe that.
I'm guessing a 2 hour talk with a Harvard psychiatrist would run the average joe around $2,300
I would pay it
I relate to you a lot Destiny. Thank you both for posting this, it helps me understand myself more.
I feel the same way about relationships as Destiny. I am far from a sociopath though and am open to the emotional spectrum. I just feel when it comes down to it, people don't spend time or energy on people they are not getting something from.
