This is a result of VW's strategy on introducing newer technologies (engines, DSG, etc,) into the market. As the 7-speed wet-clucth DSG is brand-spanking new, they limit the number of models that get it. Just in case it has a major design flaw.... Within 1 year from now, even the base 230HP GTI will get the 7-speeder as standard (when opting for the DSG). So phasing out the 6-speeder, while phasing in the 7-speed.
Yeah.. but every single review done they have the top spec GTI that costs 50% more than the base GTI. Here in the US you can get a brand new GTI for around USD20k the top range one costs around USD33-36k. You would be dumb to spend that much on a GTI and not go for the R to be fair.
Hi John Sewell, sorry about that. We had a catastrophic sound failure on the day and have had to make the best of what we had filmed. Heartbreaking as each video is 12 hours work. Replacement microphones have already arrived and ready for use.
Why is it that the Eurospec gets the better wheels
Awesome review! Will you get your hands on a golf R for us to see ?
TransHerring thanks very much. Working on getting the R as we speak.
sweet. Looking forward to it!
Great Video Review of one the best Hot Hatches on sale
I do like the look of this car. How was the 'virtual dashboard'? Does it add much?
Paul Hewitt it's a good gadget that you can live without. Although, it is very cool. The Peugeot 3008 has a very snazzy version.
Great review! Do the heated seats come as standard?
3 years later, but yes
Are you sure that this is a six speed DSG? The one I drove the other day, admittedly a Tiguan, was a seven speed.
Huw Williams definitely six. The more powerful GTi Performance has the seven-speed DSG. Weird.

Once you add a few options, you might as well get the Golf R
coladuna depends if you want options on a golf R . The standard spec is lower than the standard spec on the Gti

It will never do 44 mpg, I have a Clubsport, 24/27 around town, long run around The Peak District, 32/33 with a few thrashings, brilliant car though.
Rob Beard great to get owner insight like this, many thanks. It really is a terrific all rounder.
My long term average is 40 mpg, 35 around town and 50 on the motorway. Really does come down to driving style.
Was that an altimeter?
Ian Castilla yes it is. It's vitally important to know how high you are when driving a Golf GTI, apparently.
I have one...

The video is good but the sound is awful!

I'll stick with the 308 GTi 250
