      Slow and easy. Sheet metal arrived recently so I can start doing a little cutting and shaping.

    That's a genuine Mercedes-Benz center high mount stop light (CHMSL). It was definitely added later as 1986 was the first model year they were mandated in the US. It wasn't uncommon to see 81-85 W126s and even W123s with MB CHMSLs added. I'm thinking some dealers may have done the job if the customer wanted it.

    Have you thought about buying a w126 part car? It would help with spare parts, test fittings parts, sheet metal panels parts, etc. Can't wait to see how much rust is hiding behind that seal. 😟🤬

      That would be a good excuse to build another building to house cars LOL

      With all the aftermarket crap parts available. Having a parts car is a must these days. I know it take up space, but it comes in handy. I have a parts car in my car port, taking up space.

    One of the other videos on the rear glass said you have to take out the headliner

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. You only have to remove the C pillar trim, hat rack, and the horizontal trim in the rear which contains the rear dome light. The headliner stays in place.

    • @ImpalamansGarage

      Maybe they were talking about a different model car?

      @@ImpalamansGarage yep I think it's at 300D in the video maybe you seen it? I think he's talking about leaving the car out in the sun so it gets hot enough for them to stretch their headliner back into place after reinstalling the rear window

    The one thing i did not realize when i did what you are about to do is that the chrome trim has to be installed in the rubber around the glass before the glass is reinstalled....lol

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. I was somewhat astonished when I read that in the service manual.

      @wernerdanler2742 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh! I was thinking you would have to pull it off before removing the glass and putting it in after reinstalling the glass. My experience is with a front windscreen on a different make of car. Since you've done this already, you're the expert!
      I'm glad I never tackled this on my 85 300d about 20 years ago.

    Can the rear chrome trim be seperated from the glass?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but only after the glass is removed from the car. We removed the glass but at the end of the project I had a professional glass shop reinstall it with a new Mercedes rubber seal I purchased.

    I dread doing this job on my w116, which is quite similar to the w126. Are you going to use any sort of sealer when you put the rubber back? I also assume your going to replace the rubber.

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir. Will be using a new genuine Mercedes rubber seal and Mercedes window sealant.
