    I forgot to mention an important bit of information...
    In the manufacture of tuning pins, sometimes a small burr is left at the bottom of the threads. The recommended method of installing tuning pins in new pinblocks is by hammering or pressing them straight in, so the possible burr goes straight down, and doesn't damage most of the hole, so the pin is still held tight. But in backing the pin out several turns the burr will ream that portion of the hole, which won't grip the pin properly. Now most pins are fine, but you don't really know what is down there, so better safe than sorry.

    This is excellent! I am going to try this out. I have some broken strings on a beautiful hammered dulcimer I need to replace. Your instructions will make my task easier and be better for the instrument, too. Thank you!
