yeah, as stated, this isn't actually a new discovery; the checkpoints only cover the road, but don't cover the objects to the side of the road, which is why the rock hop thing is even possible to begin with. anyone with technical experience who could have looked at the checkpoint map would have realized it was possible on both sides because of this; the other side is just not only faster but also much easier (since the checkpoints extend a bit further on the right side, requiring the precise spinhop i do at the end of each lap) and for full transparency, even though (i think) i am the first person to showcase such a thing on youtube, Justin made a 17s TAS of this route in October of last year, which does have a video in the TAS discord (which i only found after i made this one, otherwise i would have copied his strat of getting onto the rock xd) edit: i was wrong! two separate instances of the ultra on other youtube videos are in the description now, although in my defense neither video is named anything about the ultra, so this is still the first dedicated video for it
I always thought it was scary how Nintendo was right that the original platform required for glitch would sink into the lava so you have to be quick and they didn’t know that they made the glitch harder to pull off before patching 🤣
