What do you think of the costumes? Have any of you brought them? Do you think anything could be done to make them better?
Dont get me wrong, I really think it’s fantastic that Disney are accommodating people with disability when designing costumes. And visually, I think they look grate. I just feel there is a little way to go yet. And I also understand that not all children who need adaptive costumes need wheelchairs and visa versa. But i do think the combined price point is very high.

      Hello Ma’am,
First time sub here. Thank you for this review and insights. I don't know how hard it is to find videos like this that are made by actual wheelchair enthusiasts and not by ambulatory models that don't know how "life" really is from a personal transport POV that you and I get to daily enjoy, and found yours first when I searched TH-cam for “wheelchair costumes.” I saw these "adaptive cosplay" - as Disney dubbed them - on Instagram and before I watched your review, I already had my thoughts about how practical they are, what they are made of, and, more importantly, their cost. Just to make you aware, I am a manual wheelchair user myself and in no way affiliated to any organizations I may mention in this comment. Disclaimer aside, I agree that Disney could have used better materials for the costumes. They probably had one that is better and made with sturdier materials, like Coroplast - I think that’s a brand name, but it’s essentially a corrugated plastic board, much like corrugated cardboard used for packaging boxes, but CoroPlast is widely used for signage. Speaking of packaging, one of the many reasons why they chose felt material is perhaps to cut the cost down on packaging and shipping. But I agree, the materials could have been better if they were going to charge a premium price. Although, the cost of production probably got eaten up with licensing and printing the images, beit not even printed on both sides of the panels, and to justify the price, they threw in their own branded costumes, which could have been bought at a more cost effective price separately. Part of the cost we are paying for is the convenience of not having to hunt for the costumes separately. But then, Disney had to take into account making them available in various sizes to cover ages 6-96. Hey, us adults like to get dressed up too for occasions. ;-) Anyway, before this comment gets too much longer, I would like to let you know that an organization, called Magic Wheelchair, is a company that makes custom prop costumes for PTVs (Personal Transport Vehicles - manual/motorized wheelchairs/walkers) if you’re not already aware of them. They are also on TH-cam. A little warning though, their custom builds are built to last and the cost can be daunting. I also saw them first here on TH-cam, and was inspired by them, when I started designing my own DIY “wrapz” for Halloween and showed my students and kids at church that with a little bit of creativity, they can put together a costume that they can make themselves - I was an elementary art teacher. This reignited the fire and I know it’s too late for this year, but I’m going back to the drawing board and design plans that are more cost effective and sturdier than felt and have an option of DIY by directly purchasing the plans from me, or pre built customs if I am provided with the customers’ specs of their ridez. Again, thank you for your review. Yosh...
      Stay safe and blessed,
Louie of ArTchN Ei8ht !ndustries (in TH-cam)

It’s nice to see Disney thinking about Disabled Disney fans, but I do think they could do better. My guess is that they probably didn’t involve wheelchair users in the design process, so I think that is something they need to seriously consider. Also, the fact the price is so much higher than all the other costumes just doesn’t feel right for me. Why should you have to pay more for a costume just because you’re Disabled? It doesn’t look like it’s worth the money either, as it looks pretty flimsy and not massively well finished. It’s definitely a start, but I’d love to see Disney doing more to improve on this xx

I would adjust the costumes to think about visibility. I would also make sure the costume looks good from every side, so also from the inside of the wheelchair. The pieces also need to be much more sturdy. The prices should also match the other costumes that are available. Maybe even selling a kit with different pieces that you could add or place wherever you wanted on your chair.

Really good points. I wonder if wheelchsir users were consulted in the design process?? I’d be supprised if it was a no.

Kudos to Disney for trying, but they should maybe have a number of wheelchair users input on the designs, as Shaun said for £50 you’d expect the inside to be decorated too, a few tweaks and maybe two different design shapes for different chairs and they’ll be onto a winner.

I personally like the idea of wheelchair costumes a lot, especially for such a big company, but it could use some work. Maybe if Disney hired someone in a wheelchair to do the designs and help with the use and everything, it might work, but right now it's not really worth it. The costumes to put on do look like they were designed better and more inclusive than the wheelchair costumes, though.
To be honest for such a big company I expected more. My mom and I have made several costumes for me to be worn in my wheelchair and the patterns didn't need that much extra work, even the Disney inspired ones. For example my Snow White costume, only needed 2 or 3 alterations from if we made it for an able bodied person. I wore that costume for a long day in my last year of 'middelbaar' (year 13 or senior for the UK and US) for the 100 days celebration and was not once uncomfortable. (100 days is a tradition here where 1 week the people who will graduate get to dress up and do some special stuff, like go do something with your class or make teachers do funny things and so on. Don't know if the UK does it). At the end of the day a little kid from the kindergarten school next to ours did come up to me, thinking I was the real Snow White and asked me if the witch cursed me again. It was the sweetest thing ever! Never really did something to the outside of my wheelchair, though, except maybe some ribbons.

I'm gutted it broke for you! Definitely shouldn't be doing that for £50.
As you know from instagram I love my carriage, the wheels have stayed on but took the sides of for a trip on Blackpool Trams! My wheelchair isn't custom, and has arms so found construction alot easier. I think £25 would have been a better price tbh. But as you've said it's a step in the right direction. 🤗🤗🤗

I was so excited when I first saw that they were making wheelchair costumes. However, the moment I saw how cheap they look online, hoe few selections there were, and how they were just based on transportation I was disappointed. I had hoped that being Disney they would wait until they had perfected the design to release them.

Very cool to see your review and I agree with your assessment. My fav part is also the wheel covers and in thinking now that I may try to make myself some sort of costume that has wheel covers as well, seems like they are quite make-able with a large felt piece to cut and then add velcro sewn on or even attached with hot glue.

I like the idea of this but I just don't think the execution is what we should expect from a large company. On the website photos you showed it looked to me more like a pop up fold out play tent structure sort of thing with a proper canopy but it's a bit dissapointing that there are just two felt sides. I am not really a major disney fan so I feel I can't really fully judge but I think that these could be a lot better. Maybe they are expecting the child to be pushed around by someone rather than wheeling themselves? If that was the case then I would be very dissapointed because I absolutely treasure the small amounts of independance I am able to have, as a disabled person, and these costumes seem like it would be so difficult for a child in a wheelchair to go around doing things themselves - especially if they get this for a party with friends and they want to go off and play together, it must be so hard to interract with those big walls in the way!

  • @wheelie26
    @wheelie26 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s unnumbered you said about the “arms” on the wheelchair, mine has both arms - lift up arm rests and legs - leg raisers.
With regards to the costumes they were both a rip off and not very durable. I think for kids on Halloween it would be great but it wouldn’t last the night, especially if it’s raining.

  • @callumwarren115

I do think this is a deliberate money grabbing attempt by Disney. I'm a Disney fan, I've not been to any of their parks but my dvd shelf can attest to my love of their work. This looks janky chucked together and at nearly 3 times the cost of most the other costumes it's also a bit unfair. Why do we have to pay more just to enjoy the same costumes as others. I personally think we are much better just dressing up as a character in our chairs. E.g. Mickey mouse, if anyone asks just tell them mickey fell down the stairs lol 😂.
The solution to these costumes is for these studios to write and cast disabled people in their movies. Dreamworks had hiccup and toothless in how to train your dragon (although the actor isn't disabled to my knowledge the disability in the film was acquired so its ok he's non disabled)
But I think we're still a ways off with that. Especially after the past year 😕.
Great video gem thanks for helping be a voice for the community 😁♥️

I think we should give credit to Disney for matching the Cindarella outfit to your wheels!
On the whole, a nice idea. I'm sure young ones in wheelchairs would love a bit of bling on their chair while visiting the sites. Maybe the design and / or manufacturing could be improved. And I wonder, if necessary, Disney could lower the price to the point where they actually make a small loss on the sale. The numbers being sold would not be enormous. And any small loss would be made up for by the good will generated.

I know this is an older video, but I wanted to comment, cuz I’ve seen these with kid models, and the kids head is supposed to be aligned with the widows on the costumes. Year ago, in the USA, one day for Halloween, there was a kid wheelchair user who made themselves a table holding the teapot and cup from Beauty and the Beast.
    Probably around the year 2002.
...I thought the costume was cool but I wondered how the kid actually felt.
I mean...you are the table...not the actual character of the teapot or something. ...kinda seems weird but hell, a costume is a costume.

Disney should sell the wheel covers separately so adults who want to decorate their wheelchairs, can.
As for the entire costumes, I'll echo the other posters who have already said Disney needs wheelchair users to design these costumes. Not merely help or advise. Not test after the fact. But actually design the costumes. You saw it yourself, how the costumes were designed for wheelchairs with full length sidepanels and arm rests. The idea that the costumes might have to go on wheelchairs without sidepanels and arm rests had not occoured at all to the designers.
As for the sizes of the costumes, there _should_ be ones designed and sized for adult wheelchair users. The idea of dressing up in a costume for an event or Halloween is not the exclusive preserve of children. But young children is all that the Disney wheelchair costumes are made for.
The lack of inside detail is not good, but what is also missing, is a front, rear, and top to the wheelchair costumes.
