Overall a very good snapshot of PA, but you overlooked the state's healthcare industry. Philly is home to Penn, Jefferson, Einstein, Temple and Drexel Med schools and Pittsburgh home to UPMC. The prominence of these institutions attracts top flight doctors and scientists giving way to extraordinary innovations in medicine and pharmacy.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and lived there my whole life. Having moved away, I can say that Pittsburgh is a nice place to visit, but it is horrible to live there. It's way too big for it's road system so the traffic is a nightmare. The weather is horrible and gray almost every single day. The crime rate has gone way up, as has the cost of living. Pittsburgh has really transitioned from a nice Midwestern/rust belt feeling city to become a horrible east coast feeling city with homeless, drugs, crime, horrible governance, high cost of living, bad traffic, and miserable people

      @josephbeattie7569 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Safwaan Virginia and North Carolina were both incredibly rural until pretty recently. The only major industrial cities were Richmond and Petersburg in VA and the Raleigh/Durham area in NC. Pennsylvania, meanwhile, had enormous amounts of industrial jobs all over, from Philadelphia to Scranton to Bethlehem to Pittsburgh. The South, meanwhile, didn't see its population boom until nearly a century later after WW2, when white flight led to the explosion in popularity of the Sun Belt. Alexandria, Norfolk/VA Beach, and Charlotte all fall into this category, which you can see if you look at their urban design. Huge, sprawling cities mostly made up of housing developments with a small urban core.

Greetings from Allentown and the Lehigh Valley! A couple other points about PA:
    1. As someone else mentioned, healthcare is huge and high quality in Philly, Pittsburgh and Lehigh Valley.
    2. PA is #2 in the nation in craft beer production.
    3. Bethlehem hosts one of the largest music festivals in the country each summer, a 10-day event called Musikfest that draws over a million people.
    4. While industry has fallen off, we do a great job of celebrating our industrial past with National Heritage Areas and museums.
    5. There is a rich indigenous history (and existing presence) that should also be recognized.

I grew up in PA, and you've nailed just about every city. It's really cool having seen Philadelphia turn around in recent years, but the central parts of the state have really become run-down in the past few decades. I'm really hoping that smaller towns in PA will begin to turn around in the coming decades, housing is SO cheap out there, and a lot of the smaller towns (like Lancaster or Pittston, there are DOZENS of examples though) have a ton of potential, with their older city design, brick buildings, and potentially walkable downtowns. I think as housing gets more and more expensive in the United States cities in the Rust Belt (which includes parts of Western and arguably Central PA) are going to start looking kind of cute and quaint if you can take your job remote, and if it means you can escape the oppressive rent of cities on the West Coast and even now cities like Austin Texas

Thank you for an objective view of my home state. PA doesn't have the glitz and sexiness of other states which is why it appealed to me for so many years. One thing you could add about Pittsburg is the ethnic history and how neighborhoods were formed around where people emigrated from to work in the heavy industries, especially steel. Bloomfield, Italian. Polish Hill, duh. Troy Hill, Germans. There are also Russians, Greeks and the Southwest part of PA has a surprisingly large population of Scots/English. One of my favorite stories of Pittsburgh is the Whiskey Rebellion. Pittsburgh in the late 18th century was the largest producer of rye whiskey in the young US. The feds imposed a tax on the making of whiskey and the distillers in Southwest PA rebelled against it. This was serious enough to have the federal militia come in to restore order and enforce the law. One distiller by the name of Wiggle had been arrested and was to be hanged but President Washington, at the last moment decided to commute the sentence. There is now a rye whiskey, called Wiggle Rye distilled in the Strip District mentioned in this video.

Great video. I grew up in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area and agree with most of what was said about it. It is a sad reality for a region that was very important in the early history of the United States and that fueled a lot of America's industrial capacity during the World Wars. And of course this coincided with extreme environmental degradation and pollution. Ironically, I believe the one saving grace of this region now is the natural beauty (The State of Wyoming was named for the Wyoming Valley after all). There are some spectacular natural wonders not far from the Valley, the most well-known being Rickett's Glen. And only being one and a half hours from New York City has its benefits. But I'm very glad ample time was spent on PA's natural beauty in general, it is such an under-rated state in this regard!

Very thorough and interesting. Have visited Pennsylvania several times, mostly work related. But I was always impressed with the scenery. I cannot ever recall being in any part of Pennsylvania where there was not mountains, hills, and thick forests. I also took it upon myself to visit the YUENGLING brewery to stock up. No need to do this any longer. Since March of 21, the tasty lager is available in my home state of Michigan. I was impressed with the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh where you mentioned the locals ran the show rather than the tourists. Might be worth a trip. Only 5 hours east of here by auto. Thanks for the post Kyle.

A few years ago, I came up with what I call My Favorite Question Ever: There are 50 states - if you could see 49 and never get to #50, what's the one you'd never go to?
I've tracked the answers I've gotten over the years. (It's mostly to students in classes I teach). I've gotten over 900 responses - and still no one has ever said Pennsylvania. Every other state has been mentioned at least twice, but no one has a problem with Pennsylvania.
It's important enough to be important, but not so important that it annoys anyone

Even after driving far more prestigious roads (Blue Ridge Pkwy, I-70 and the Million Dollar Highway in CO, the Hai Van Pass in Vietnam, etc), route 322 still holds its own.

Really enjoyed the video. Been to PA many times as I had grandparents in the little town of Oil City in NWPA. Beautiful small town nestled in a valley on both sides of the Allegheny River. They took me to Erie, Tionesta, Titusville (the birthplace of the oil industry) Hershey, Gettysburg, Pittsburgh, and places in between. They're gone now, but we had some great times. But having visited there as I got older I started to see many of the small towns are really declining. Not even great for retiring in considering the weather. Not a lot of hope or reason to stay put, and drugs are having their way. Especially sad because of how picturesque they are.

SO!, I hate to be a broken record, but PA is one of the states that has been affected by fracking and while it isn't the worst hurt state, fracking has been an influence there. Out west I have watched videos that show flammable water exiting taps into kitchen sinks. BAD problems, from fracking. If anyone could do justice to this subject matter, I'm thinking it has to be you. What is the geography of fracking and why are companies aloud to devastate whole regions of our country? What is the geography that makes fracking possible and how come it isn't being done in a sustainable manner? Sheesh!

Follow the money. Most of the laws and regs re mining, gas and oil weren't updated as they were dying industries, then fracking hit with the false promise of jobs. So, Harrisburg got scared, afriad the gas companies would pass us by. When in truth the state has something that's in high demand, the state could have set reasonible standards, but we got sold out by the R's and a few chicken D's. Why not demand that the process be done safely or not at all. Fortunately fracking is banned in the Delaware River basin.

As a Pennsylvanian, I've been waiting for this video for a while and it doesn't disappoint. You're pretty spot on with your impressions of the cities. Most of them are pretty rough, some (like Reading) more than others. I do really hope that NJ Transit / Amtrak rebuild the Lackawanna Cutoff and connect Scranton to New York, because imo Scranton absolutely deserves better. Under its rough exterior of poverty and decline, there's a pretty cool mid-sized city waiting to be revived.
I've also learned to appreciate both the natural beauty of the state and its older urban design. Rather than a homogeneous sea of housing developments, there are lots of nice little towns that have been swallowed up by urban sprawl over time, yet have still kept their charm. That's not even mentioning the rest of the towns further out in the boonies. I'm originally from Lewisburg, PA (one of the cute little towns you didn't have time to mention), and I can confidently say that Northern Pennsylvania doesn't get nearly as much credit as it deserves. It's absolutely one of the greatest natural areas left on the East Coast, right up there with places like the Adirondacks and White Mountains.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has had a lot of corruption issues that have been in the way of the city improvements. Otherwise we could probably have the same growth as the Lehigh Valley. The only reason its been barely growing recently is because of a large Latin and Carribbean influx due to dirt cheap housing and plentiful warehousing jobs, as lots of new warehouses have popped up in the past 5 years. Theres also a decent ammount NY/NJ folks who are being priced out and moving to Northeast PA.
Crime has been trending down in the past 10 years but improvements to the cities here have been pretty modest.

The most beautiful place I have see yet in that state was Pine Creek Gorge "The Grand Canyon of PA." But this state is important to a lot of historic events. COVID has allowed gentrification. Alot more people can work from home so why live in expensive cities? That's why most gentrification has happened. I think Pittsburgh is a unique city in that it doesn't behave like most other cities I have been in. I don't know how to describe that. It is what it is.
