I think it is worth mentioning that I read Mark Cavendish‘s biography and he said he always did really terribly on these power tests, like so badly he refused to do them any more, as it was too embarrassing. He suggested the reason that he is an amazing rider is to do with his body shape/aerodynamics, bike skills and timing. It’s not solely about our outputs for certain kinds of riders.
I call BS since he participated WC/Olympics track event that demand aggressive bunch fight at 50 km/h. You can't be Madison WC with an amateur pw output. You can't compete in Omnium with an amateur pw output. You can't survive the Poggio at race pace with an amateur pw output. You can't arrive before time limit on TdF moutain stages with an amateur pw output. Despide what he claims he is able to sustain 400+ W for several minutes. Even in a sprint leadout you are above 500 W in the wheel of your last teamate. He may lack of VO2 max to performe in TT but he would be embarrased against some Martin, Wiggins, Dumoulin, Dennis, Cancellara... but not being terrible
Although 'terribly' is probs in relation to the best gc/all round riders in the world and not sprinters. Cav is probs still has incredible numbers bearining in mind he still had to get round tours
road cycling in inherently all about power. need that engine. without the engine you aren't winning races. in many cases you aren't even finishing the longer races. sprinters in particular need to be up front else it don't matter how much you can output at the end when you've been dropped early on for inability to keep pace.
$4k? Really appears that its there to "support riders who don't have the backing of elite level coaching" as long as you've got an elite level bank account.
There’s some cracking riders out there who cannot afford this kind of testing so to me it’s more of a money making exercise. Teams are seriously missing out on some raw talent and should be aiming at taking their testing methods to places where anybody can try out. Testing days or weekends set up. Could easily attract retailers so sell their goods at these events and gain some revenue that way. We get talking to riders who are 14/15 and 16 and are blowing away KOM’s for fun but have a certain discipline which is amazing at such a young age. All the same I enjoyed watching the video
I'm not sure I'd be in a joking mood after being told I had no chance of being a pro, and should maybe try "spectating". The trainer was savage on someone who just gave everything they had. Good job Paul don't give up because Mr. Clean said you should.
This test seems very cool. But one thing about this very event. How can they test anything without proper cooling? I would set myself on fire right there before hitting my best numbers.
Didn’t look like talent id session, more like a lot of middle aged men who have the money to fly to Geneva and then can also afford the fee to pay for the testing session - just so they can see how fit they are at 40-60 years old. Mind you I am 45 but don’t have the money but would I be better spending the money on a power meter in the long run?
honestmcgyver if you buy a pm you can just go out, do a 6 second sprint, 30 sec and 4 min max effort and compare for urself. Powermeter is the way to go. And a good book about training with power. Be your own coach.

no. thats not the pros average. its the average of the folks tested at this uci place. if it were the pro's averages. i best be calling up british cycling for a place in the team pursuit squad.
Can someone please explain how do those bikes work, how do you change the resistance to put max power without spinning out, or it does it automatically.
I had a go on a wattbike at the 2009 London Bike Show for a 500m sprint - setting the resistance for the first time is a bit of an educated guess but you will work out where you need to be fairly quickly. I talked to a few people beforehand, made a realistic assessment of my own abilities and went for it. Luckily I was not too far out!
are the averages at the end when he compares himself averages for pro riders? I'm just a bit confused because ive done the test and want to know where i stand because according to that my 6 second sprint power is way above average at 1297W / 19.4 W/kg and at 5 minutes its 300W
Is there somewhere I can have a go at this session. Manchester would be ideal..? I havnt done all them efforts in one session but my all time power, weight and age are all at or around the UCI average. Other than the 4min which is 412w - 6.54w/kg.
I was about to comment that his saddle height was too low (as were quite a few of the riders'). And since we're on the topic, his reach was too short as well. Both of those definitely affect how much power someone can generate during a sustained effort.
What? How is a shade over 4W/Kg for a 4 min test elite level? I am a shitty cyclist who just started in the relative scheme of things and my 20 min FTP is 3.5... Wout Poels was doing 400 Watts for like half an hour for Froome in the Alps in 2016'
All of top guys have an FTP of around 400W. BTW, Wiggins did ~472W for 52 minutes at the London Olympic TT, Cancellara did the same at Rio. The Hour Record was done at 450W. Lochlan Morton can do a bit over 300W for an hour and he's considered a scrub in the peleton..
Yeah 5.0W/Kg for 4 minutes is super-low for Pro-Tour level! I myself can hold around that for 20 minutes, and i'm a 38yr old who gets beat by 2 minutes every week at the local 16km TT...
It doesn't seem like a track kilometre sprinter test. My numbers in a simulation were: 21.1w/kg for 6" (development numbers), 16.6w/kg for 30" 1450w avg (over 3w/kg elite numbers...) and sure, after, for the 4' effort that I could only manage a minute over 450w then, failure and almost died. But it was fun. It's a fun feeling you are dying.
