Ich persönlich find Sprachanalyse nur sehr interessant. So viele mieserable Übersetzungen fliegen im Internet rum, dass ein bischen über Sprache zu reden, doch nicht verkehrt ist. Solange verstanden wird, was mitgeteilt werden soll, ist doch die Funktion der Sprache erfüllt. Nur wenn mein Installationsassisstent meine Spracheinstellungen ignoriert und mir einen deutschen Text gibt in dem jedes zweite Wort fehlt, bin ich unglücklich. Ansonsten könnt ihr mit der Sprache anstellen was ihr wollt. Und da sich Sprache ständig verändert kann man endlos drüber reden :) Und ich werde niemals etwas besser wissen. Nur andere Möglichkeiten vorschlagen. Alles andere wäre albern, da ich keine einzige Deutschprüfung in der Oberstufe nicht unterpunktet habe. Dreifache Verneinung: auch sehr deutsch.

'krass' can mean that something is extreme in some way and it can be used to describe something very positive or very negative but sometimes it just means somewhat extreme/suprising without a negative or positive connotation. 'krass' is most often used by young people and generally in informal settings.

„Trotzdem“ can also be translated as „still“, I guess. Also, when you are having an argument with someone and he/she is bringing up a good point, you can just say „Trotzdem“. This basically means „I see your point, but I‘m still not changing my mind“ 😄

Es gibt natürlich Situationen, in denen "eigentlich" nur Gebrauchslyrik ist, aber es gibt auch reale Anwendungen dafür -- wenn der reale Hintergrund erforscht wird/werden soll.
Ja, "zwar" ist schwer zu erklären. Ich würde sagen, dass "zwar" eine einschränkende Bedeutung hat, während "und zwar" genau gegenteilig eine bekräftigende Bedeutung hat. Beispiel: "Ich kenne ein tolles Restaurant, und zwar XY." ("und zwar": Bekräftigung.) Die Antwort darauf: "Restaurant XY gefällt mir nicht, das Essen schmeckt zwar gut, aber das Ambiente ist nicht schön". ("zwar": Einschränkung, danach kommt "aber".)

@Franky Hathaway Das sind halt eher ältere Namen. Und ist halt ein altes Sprichwort. Aber zumindest hier in Schwaben in der Region Ulm heißen viele Ältere Leute Hans, Josef und Wilhelm. Das sind halt alte Namen. Heute würde das Sprichwort eher so lauten: Leon, Dominik, Justin, Lukas findet man in jeder Schulklass'! Aber echt so als ich in der 1. Klasse war, das war 2008, hatte ich 3 Leons in der Klasse. Das mit Leon kommt halt von Leonardo Di Caprio, so hat es mein Vater mir halt mal erklärt.

Examples: "Ich habe keine Zeit." -> "I don't have time" ... "Ich habe eigentlich keine Zeit" ~~> "Thinking about it ... I'm afraid I don't have time" "Woher kommst Du?" -> "Where do you come from?" ... "Woher kommst Du eigentlich?" ~~> "Just out of curiosity: Where do you come from?" The inflational use of "eigentlich" in German is just the same as with "like" esp in US English. Very often only a filler word which actually eigentlich like means just nothing at all ;-)

@Laura M. K. In switzerland it's even worse. They love to use "oder?" (Lit.: ,or?) At the end of sentences, no matter if it's appropriate. Like; "Mir gaht’s nöd so guet, oder?" "I am not that fine, or?" Especially in casual conversations
I‘d translate „I‘ll do it anyways“ with „Ich werde es sowieso tun“ which is slightly different to „Ich werde es trotzdem tun“ Like, If there‘s no argument, that will keep you from doing it, say „sowieso“(anyways) If someone gives you one specific argument against doing it, but you chose to do it nevertheless, thats when you say „trotzdem“
'Eigentlich' mostly means 'actually', sometimes also 'theoretically'/'in theory', but in your example 'Wie heißt du eigentlich?' it means 'by the way' (: But if we're extra, we can double it and say 'Übrigens, wie heißt du eigentlich?' xD
"Mann" is sipmly the short version of "Ehemann" which means husband. The same for “Frau” and “Ehefrau”. You rarely hear Ehemann and Ehefrau. The context tells you what the speaker is referring to. “Der Mann ist groß” means “that man is tall”. “Mein Mann ist groß“ means „my husband is tall“.
Erstmal: deine Aussprache ist wirklich gut! Dann als kleine Hinweise: “Geil” kannst du meistens als awesome übersetzen, “trotzdem” kann but, nevertheless und yet bedeuten, deswegen wird es oft benutzt.

Zb.:"Woher kommst du eigentlich" (mit Betonung auf dem "eigentlich") bedeutet ja dass man vlt vorher einen kleinen spaß macht und der gegenüber jetzt wirklich wissen will wo du eigentlich her kommst. Mit normaler Betonung kann man das "eigentlich" auch einfach weg lassen. Meistens setzt man in dem Fall das "eigentlich" ein wenn die Frage ein wenig aus dem Nichts kommt.
What I also think is very confusing (also for us Germans) is when we say "er ist mein Freund". So it can mean that he is a friend of you or your boyfriend. We don't have a word for boyfriend here in Germany (except husband, but not everyone is married).
"Ge?" is basically a shorter form of "gell?", Which is a southern equivalent of "oder?" at the end of a sentence. It basically turns a statement into a question. Example: "Der Typ ist schon gegangen." "That guy is already gone". "Der Typ ist schon gegangen, gell?" "Is that guy already gone?" It's only "Gell?" or "Ge?" in the south of Germany, especially Bavaria. Everywhere else it would be "Oder?". It's crazy how much you learn about your own language if you start thinking about what meaning some words actually have.
I think she meant "gell", but depending on where you are in Germany, the pronunciation can get really weird (worst I've seen was in the "Oberpfalz" and they use it there in every 2nd sentence - horrible !) Nevertheless "gell" is actually not a common german phrase ! (see what I did here ? :p) It is only used in the southern part of Germany: Bavaria, maybe also in Baden-Würtemberg and aswell in Austria - but that's about it ... so it is safe to say that the majority of Germans don't use it at all and probably won't even know it.
"nee" is Dutch for "no". And "doof" is Dutch for "deaf". "noch nie" would be "never so far" or just "not yet". "krass" comes from Latin "crassus" meaning "fat" or "phat". The original meaning is "gross" or "stark". "eigentlich" could be "actually" but also "in fact" or "normally". Or in that case of the examples, "by the way". "trotzdem" is "nevertheless", but you would normally say "anyway". "gell" is typical south German, you won't hear that in the north. There you would hear "ne?" instead. "Oider" in correct German is "Alter", meaning "old chap". "Junge" just means "boy". And "Digga" is "Dicker" in correct German, meaning "fatty".

We use the word "eigentlich" for usually or normally . For example:I eigentlich(usually) don't like apple pie. Or when someone says something wrong amd you want to correct them. "ge" really is only used in the south, so you're right that it's a dialect thing :D I am from northern Germany so if you ever visit northern Germany, forget words like "Hallo", "Guten Abend", "Guten Tag" and "Guten Morgen". I would say that u can use "eigentlich" as "by the way" sometimes. Not everytime, but you can translate the sentences "Wo kommst du eigentlich her? @Franky Hathaway Das sind halt eher ältere Namen. Und ist halt ein altes Sprichwort. Aber zumindest hier in Schwaben in der Region Ulm heißen viele Ältere Leute Hans, Josef und Wilhelm. Das sind halt alte Namen. Heute würde das Sprichwort eher so lauten: Leon, Dominik, Justin, Lukas findet man in jeder Schulklass'! Aber echt so als ich in der 1. Klasse war, das war 2008, hatte ich 3 Leons in der Klasse.

The surname "schmidt" is often in Germany, but the most common aftername is "müller"
"eigentlich" ... I'd rather not translate it as "exactly". I'd prefer "actually", if I had to translate it at all. It slightly changes the tone and mood of a sentence.
Examples:
"Ich habe keine Zeit." -> "I don't have time" ... "Ich habe eigentlich keine Zeit" ~~> "Thinking about it ... I'm afraid I don't have time"
"Woher kommst Du?" -> "Where do you come from?" ... "Woher kommst Du eigentlich?" ~~> "Just out of curiosity: Where do you come from?"
"Wer hat gestern diesen Lärm gemacht?" -> "Who made that noise yesterday?" ... "Wer hat eigentlich gestern diesen Lärm gemacht?" ~~> "Who the heck made that noise yesterday?"

When you use eigentlich on the end of the sentence it means something like "by the way". And as the first word its like "well yeah but no"
'Eigentlich' mostly means 'actually', sometimes also 'theoretically'/'in theory', but in your example 'Wie heißt du eigentlich?' it means 'by the way' (: But if we're extra, we can double it and say 'Übrigens, wie heißt du eigentlich?' xD
"Mann" is sipmly the short version of "Ehemann" which means husband. The same for “Frau” and “Ehefrau”. You rarely hear Ehemann and Ehefrau. The context tells you what the speaker is referring to. “Der Mann ist groß” means “that man is tall”. “Mein Mann ist groß“ means „my husband is tall“.
Maybe she confound the word "Mann" with "man" which is sounding the same in German

"Oider" in correct German is "Alter", meaning "old chap". "Junge" just means "boy". And "Digga" is "Dicker" in correct German, meaning "fatty".

We use the word "eigentlich" for usually or normally . For example:I eigentlich(usually) don't like apple pie.
Or when someone says something wrong amd you want to correct them. For example: "No but eigentlich it was not her, it was him who broke the vase.
Or for Questions like: What ar you speaking of eigentlich? (So like how you said it also means exactly)

"ge" really is only used in the south, so you're right that it's a dialect thing :D I am from northern Germany so if you ever visit northern Germany, forget words like "Hallo", "Guten Abend", "Guten Tag" and "Guten Morgen". Just use "moin" xD It sound like short for "morgen" but you also say it e.g. at 11 pm at a bar :D
It is not "ge" but "geh", like a short version of "ah, geh weiter", "ah, geh fort", "ah, geh (weiter), das meinst du doch nicht ernst." and so on.

Similarly today people say "fuck me" when they are baffled, as in "you can't be serious, I don't believe my eyes".
They are not literally asking for intercourse but that meaning is still in place. That's the fun part of using that kind of language.

In Germany, it depends on the region you're in. It's "Ge!" or "Gell" in the southern regions, but in other places you have "Woll!", "Wa!" or "Ne!".
In school I learned, that "gell" is best translated by "isn't it | wasn't it", like:
"That movie is dope, isn't it?" - "Der Film is geil, gell?"

Maier is also a common last name. And it's always spelled different. I have known three or four Maiers and everyone of them is spelled different. Maier, Meier, Mayer, Meyer.
The difference between "Woher kommst du?" and "Woher kommst du eigentlich?" is that the first one can be answered with "from school" while the second one would be "from the USA//". The "eigentlich" is used to express that this is a general question and not one referring to the current situation. Eigentlich is "actual" but it can also be used in a meaning similar to ursprünglich ("original", "primary").

I would say that u can use "eigentlich" as "by the way" sometimes. Not everytime, but you can translate the sentences "Wo kommst du eigentlich her? Wie heißt du eigentlich?" to "By the way where are you from? Btw what's your name (actually)".
You can use "eigentlich" when you already talked to that person.
For exemple: You start a conversation and at some point you remember that you don't know her name. You didn't ask her. But you're still in a conversation with her. Now you can ask "Wie ist eigentlich deine Name?"
Or sometimes you can use it, if you want to say that you changed your mind like "I hated you, but now that I know you, I really like you" = "Eigentlich hab ich dich gehasst, aber jetzt, wo ich dich kenne, mag ich dich sehr"
