  • Airlines will have to hire nearly 500,000 commercial pilots in the next 20 years, to keep up with aircraft orders and the biggest need is in the Asia-Pacific region. Seth Doane reports on one pilot who has relocated to China already.

If you're an entry level American pilot, it's incredibly difficult to get a job starting out in China. Most airlines in China require well over 3000+ hours, and a type rating in your current aircraft. They don't train you for your type aircraft like US airlines do. Most pilots that go over there for the money, have had previous experience in the airlines. (Like the guy here)

I only had to flight instruct for about 13 months to get my hours (250 hours to 1500). I really honed my skills as a pilot and felt more prepared to fly jets then I would have otherwise.

The regionals do take advantage of low air time pilots who want to build up their hours. Remember the Colgan Air Flight 3407 where the cause of the crash besides icing on the wings was also pilot fatigue.

Maybe they should have made the focus of the story first year regional first officer pay. It's easy to see why no one wants to spend four days away from your family every week, every month, every year for 20k a year.

The trick is how you play the system, I live in Pittsburgh, and work for Republic who has a base here... I drive to work, don't commute, and that saves food and hotel costs. Plus, being only 23, I still live with the folks and they don't care since I'm gone so often... You can bid to have one day pairings, and as your seniority grows your chances of making your whole year just one day's grows as well... Not having to pay rent and getting away from the hum drum of suburban life is nice, so I bid four days and with the extra per diem I save an average of half my paycheck ($2000 first year)...
Some people choose to get married, move, and start a family and THEN join the regionals, which is so unwise and hard on the married life having to commute now that you are stuck in one place even if a local base closes...
TL;DR: you make it work, and yes I think we all get paid poorly but it's how you play the game that makes the job more enjoyable...

They Lied about everything. Even though He Had a Valid US Commercial License and Felt Privileged to help bring this emerging private flight to China, Now after he Died Tragically May 3, 2015 in China. The Bastards Now call Him an unlicensed Criminal. Jason was a very competent Pilot and flew with Chief Instructor in Corvallis Oregon Dec. 2014, who found Jason Fully Competent with No Fault! They barely made it air born and crashed in 1/2 mile due to mechanical failure. WHERE THE HELL WAS THEIR MECHANIC!!!???
