Fun fact: OVA's came about due to the increasing demand of anime, as such people were willing to go to video store to directly buy it. I've got an idea about the boys saying that from around 2017 and onward, anime is like fast fashion where a show is really popular, ends and then no one talks about it. I think it's two parts: 1. More anime is being pumped out than ever before and 2. Anime is mainstream now. Both of those work in tandem to promote hype for something when it's airing and then everyone is on the next show. Whether you view those things as good or bad, having an influx of casual viewers watching whatever new big thing is airing and then having another good show airing next season that they jump to right after to follow the hype is what makes it seem like no one in the "community" talks about something once it's over. There really isn't a "community" in the sense that there once was. You can be someone that likes to watch a lot of anime and find someone else that also feels the same way but end up not having much overlap in what you've seen, and it wasn't like that even 10 years ago.
Yeah anime has mirrored TV (and most other forms of entertainment) nowadays. When there were a limited number of channels, EVERYONE watched The Sopranos Friends etc. because you had few other options and you wanted to stay in the weekly conversation. There’s an infinite number of shows that all drop at different times now so if you and I might equally love watching TV but have seen nothing in common. The advantage of having 12-13 episodes (a cour) is that we don't need to wait so damn long and can be more flexible, keep in mind a 12 episode anime should ideally be 1 year in production in order to have a healthy production (about 90% aren't). Keep in mind Frieren had 2 years in its production for it to air 28 episodes, sure its fine if its starts out like that since no one had any expectation, but usually sequels needs to come out in a shorter time to keep interest relevant because in 2 years a lot has changed in the anime industry and new methods of how shows are supposed to be done are the meta. What needs to be done is to cut down on the amount of anime shows being produced and keep the most relevant ones, because having so many projects around hurts the overall quality of the shows because its hard to get top animators on a project when they need to jump around stuff with barely any time. Also this is not a "quiet year" we had tons of shows this year from small to big.
Connor is absolutely right that Yuri on Ice should have been in the 2014 to 2017, cause it was so big, the first Crunchyroll awards were nicknamed the YOI awards bc the fans mobilized so hard it won every award it was nominated for
The Executioner and Her Way of Life is a great example of an anime that needed to be 24 episodes because 12 episodes only gave it time for the setup for the rest of the series and it hurts because it is one of my favorite isekai. I think Ascendance of a Bookworm is going to start popping off once season four gets released.
Historically, Mumin was (and still is to some extent, the merchandise sells really well) huge in both Finland and Sweden. It was without a shadow of a doubt, without us knowing it was animated in Japan, our introduction to anime
The FMA 2003 ending was brilliant. I think that in its case, they had their own story to tell with it. And they didn't even just pull the ending out of nowhere, they structured it properly and had it planned to go the route that it did from the beginning.
2010-2013 I can't forgive you for forgetting Highschool DxD. Literally one of the best ecchi and harem anime out there and it even had a good story which is pretty rare for an ecchi/harem show (im still waiting for season 5 😭)
Gonna go ahead and combine 2006-2010 with 2010-2013. Nana, black lagoon, spice and wolf, hxh, fate zero and steins gate are some of my favourite anime oat.

Disappointed Ashita no Joe wasn't picked for 1917-1974. Easily one of the most important anime ever made and still reigns as one of the best sports anime
Figures. They don't even talk about kinnikuman when it comes to shonen series, despite the fact that its the modern blueprint for them that even dragonball took from. Even with the new anime out right now
@@epicman-qe9wuI was dying when I saw the cross counter referenced in Umineko And the ending of Ashita no Joe is constantly referenced in anime today too
Oh man they sang praises of the 1975-1985 era but I still think they understaded how both influencial and excellent those series were. They were absolutely MASSIVE back then and all of them got big internationally. The boys should definitely go back and watch some of them, especially The Rose of Versailles, it aged like fine wine. Also a shame the previous slide didn't include Ashita no Joe, another massive show, but there's only so much you can cram into these slides
I was a little disappointed they didn't watch The Rose of Versailles, it's awesome and the way it influenced queer rep in anime is certainly something worth noting
22:57 While Disney didn't start picking up and dubbing Ghibli's work until the turn of the millennium, Streamline picked up most of their back catalogue for dubbing throughout the '90s. I know this because watching the Streamline dub of My Neighbour Totoro when I was very small (I'm in my thirties now, about the same age as the boys) was a formative childhood experience. That said, the *first* attempt at bringing over a Ghibli film in dub was Warriors of the Wind (Nausicaä) back in the mid '80s, which was a fairly infamous fiasco.
Date a Live?. Excluding Kurumi Tokisaki from this statement because people will auto flock for her (for obvious reasons), DAL pretty much fits with your comment, It's pretty much "enough said, it is what it is", It's not necessarily good but it's also not really bad given how the plot goes and it kinda goes dark. People don't really talk about it online too... Oddly enough I thinks it's pretty much how Tsunako works are, Fairy Fencer, Neptunia, Engage Kiss and... that new one I forget the name of but is the newest so far
I'm tired of 'Nobody is talking about it' being accepted as a valid criticism of media. Nobody talks about anything unless you, you know, start a conversation about it. That's how conversation works. Saying a show is bad because nobody is talking about it is like saying pizza is bad because you're not currently eating pizza.
@@Erminence Again, that's like saying nobody likes pizza because neither of us are eating it right now. Ignoring the fact that that just makes no sense, either of us could simply get some pizza at any moment, which would make the entire argument completely fall apart. "Nobody is talking about it." is not valid criticism. Saying that something wasn't impactful is a valid statement, but that type of thing doesn't really matter.
@@SharkofspaceYour pizza analogy doesn't hold up when you consider the scale of the internet. Just because you don't have a pizza right now doesn't mean millions of others aren't enjoying one at this very moment. And about that anime you mentioned - if I am struggling to find people talking about it lately on the internet, chances are it's just can't holding up anymore
Woah, its crazy seeing the boys talk about Mazinger Z and CandyCandy. My parents grew up with these shows in Mexico. Captain Tsubasa would replay so often in the late 2000's that even we grew up with it years later.
If I remember correctly death parade started out as a student project that was turned into a full anime because it won some competition. Really cool show
@@aliasjon8320 It was a short called "Death Billiards" it was basically that. Famous studios would let up and coming animators make shorts and they would be put into a competition. Death Billiards and Little Witch Academia were competing that year I think it was 2013? If I'm not mistaken. 2 years later in 2015 Yuzuru Tachikawa and Madhouse released Death Parade (2015). He then went on to direct season 1 and 2 of Mob Psycho and the anime Deca-Dence. Love Death Parade. Yuzuru Tachikawa is building an incredible catalog.

I'm a bit surprised that they didn't mention Demon Slayer when it comes to the impact and popularity of recent anime series. It's still really huge in terms of popularity and I feel like it always goes viral.
@@tinkeringsoulCould be, I mainly meant the part where Connor says that the only relevant modern animes are Jujutsu Kaisen and Vinland Saga and I was kinda surprised that he didn't mention Demon Slayer after talking about the impact it had/has on the anime movie trend and it being a hugely popular and successful series in general.
They all hate on demon slayer for some reason, like, they talk about how hype it is, and how it's the only anime that REALLY hypes them up, but they also shit-talk it and say it's bad, it's really weird
@@funnynamelol3156 The manga wouldn't be so popular if that was true, if animation is all that matters, then why was the manga so damn popular? Joey judging Ouran Highschool Host Club by the fandom is so dirty The fandoms ALWAYS typically ruin the show if you are in the trenches as its usually teens But as someone who grew up with it i can say a lot of stuff didnt age well but thats also a show that helped awaken me to what nonbinary mentality was
@@hescutethough2419 I remember Tamaki's development being tied to old fashioned views of women and how they are supposed to act And the other thing that didn't age well is maybe a joke or two But overall I appreciate the effort because a anime that brings up gender back then allowed future shows to do it better. @@tionnakosiancic oh 100% And I point out to people even the show starts out by saying it was a joke at first but conveniently the show forgets to continue to keep their word on that....which made it so gross. I have been wanting an era's of anime video for a while. Glad the boys make the video. I got into anime around the 2014 - 2017. Yeah agreed. I feel just watch what you enjoy, these 3 let memes and internet culture cloud their judgement way to much about what is good and what is not. They don't mention violet evergarden or the dangers in my heart, and they mainly focus on the Shonen, which is the least inspired and generic genre. Hell's paradise was great and so was chainsaw man. I personally hate Jujutsu kaisen, and think fairy tail has better writing than it, but again...that's a personal opinion of mine, not the internet. I feel...people should just have fun and forget about the internet, it's a toxic cesspool, especially places like Twitter and redit, just...have fun, watch what you want.
Dungeon Meshi has been the big one in my friend group this year. Friends and Family that haven't watched anime before or in a long time sat down and watched it. It's def my number one currently.
14:22 plus, the OG Urusei Yatsura is not censored, so at the final scene of Ataru Moroboshi chasing Lum at stadium, Lum’s berries are all out, so that must hit different for 12 yr old boys at that time
Nah; as the boys point out breasts were a fairly common sight on TV at the time, and Urusei Yatsura is pretty tame even compared to Maison Ikkoku or Ranma.
@@qifrey2472Most of that is just the usual slop weebs eat up.
My man, Gen Urobuchi from 2011 to 2012, aired S1 of Psychopass, Fate Zero, and Madoka Magica.
Absolutely goated.
Not anime but he also wrote Kamen Rider Gaim.

The FMA 2003 ending was brilliant. I think that in its case, they had their own story to tell with it. And they didn't even just pull the ending out of nowhere, they structured it properly and had it planned to go the route that it did from the beginning.
Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the few OG isekais.
Was pretty popular in the Philippines, alongside Yuyu Hakusho, Slam Dunk and DBZ.
It is also getting a remake too.

I can't forgive you for forgetting Highschool DxD.
Black lagoon is that good? I watched 4 eps and dropped it

Sadly Blood+ did not make the list for 2001-2005 era.
Disappointed Ashita no Joe wasn't picked for 1917-1974. Easily one of the most important anime ever made and still reigns as one of the best sports anime
the cross counter is almost always an indirect reference to ashita no joe shits goated fr
Figures. They don't even talk about kinnikuman when it comes to shonen series, despite the fact that its the modern blueprint for them that even dragonball took from. Even with the new anime out right now
@@epicman-qe9wu yeah but they probably think it started in dragonball
@@epicman-qe9wuI was dying when I saw the cross counter referenced in Umineko

I love that Connor brought up Terror is resonance 💃🏻
Oh man they sang praises of the 1975-1985 era but I still think they understaded how both influencial and excellent those series were. They were absolutely MASSIVE back then and all of them got big internationally. The boys should definitely go back and watch some of them, especially The Rose of Versailles, it aged like fine wine. Also a shame the previous slide didn't include Ashita no Joe, another massive show, but there's only so much you can cram into these slides
I was a little disappointed they didn't watch The Rose of Versailles, it's awesome and the way it influenced queer rep in anime is certainly something worth noting
That bulma scene awakened me for sure. Three times in the morning before school.
I'm so happy Revolutionary Girl Utena is on there!!! 49:19 😂❤🌹🥀
Joey was singing the blood+ opening btw, the third one, one of the best anime openings of all time imo and an underrated gem of an anime to boot.
31:02 Damn. Joey opened memory lanes with that singing 😂
This episode made me go back and download all the old English openings. Man I miss those!
Just because someone doesn't talk about an anime, it doesn't mean the show is worse.
@@Sharkofspace
They mean that the show didn't leave an impact on people enough to bring it up in conversation and have a conversation about it.
Astro Boy deserves a lot more respect and appreciation than it gets. It’s a pioneer of anime and manga and no one talks about Astro Boy.

Joey judging Ouran Highschool Host Club by the fandom is so dirty
The fandoms ALWAYS typically ruin the show if you are in the trenches as its usually teens
But as someone who grew up with it i can say a lot of stuff didnt age well but thats also a show that helped awaken me to what nonbinary mentality was
Ikr its still a fantastic show!!❤
@@hescutethough2419 I remember Tamaki's development being tied to old fashioned views of women and how they are supposed to act
And the other thing that didn't age well is maybe a joke or two
But overall I appreciate the effort because a anime that brings up gender back then allowed future shows to do it better.
Haruhi is a nonbinary queen 👑
And the anime is still enjoyable yeah
I love Ouran but feel like the twins dynamic is the awkward elephant in the room. Did not age well, lol.
Lots of anime had LGBTQ+ themes before OHHC. One great example that did it best (imo) is Cardcaptor Sakura.
@@tionnakosiancic oh 100%
And I point out to people even the show starts out by saying it was a joke at first but conveniently the show forgets to continue to keep their word on that....which made it so gross.
I believe it was supposed to be a joke trope where girls that went to the host club like forbidden romance between siblings or whatever the hell trope popular in Japan- then Japan went you know what we will just never mention again its a joke and the twins don't actually like each other like wtf Japan.
If they kept to their word and made sure the audience knew it was gross it still wouldn't have aged well but it's annoying they got lazy and just let incest joke happen .
