Hokkaido is not the place where the popular little orange pumpkin grows, but the Japanese island in the North Pacific, whose inhabitants switched from big game hunting on land to the use of the rich resources of the sea 12,000 years ago. And so early they started to make pottery. The Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean surround Hokkaido. Fish, seals and whales, seaweed, mussels and sea urchins - for thousands of years, they are the livelihood of the people. They obtain the material for their houses, tools, and clothes from native plants and have developed special techniques for this. The modern present is also full of old traditions. Much is still undiscovered and unexplored. Will the archaeologists succeed in preserving the sites and the old knowledge before the sea cover them up? The film shows the wealth of cultural heritage, the ephemeral beauty of the landscapes and the inventive spirit of the islanders.
