boxbox is definitely box^2 and not 2box if we had to choose one of the two.
The reason is that when we add we always write a + symbol, as in a+b
However, when we multiply we write axb or a*b in programming, but we often remove the symbol, for instance :
(a + b)² = a² + 2*a*b + b² = a² + 2ab + b²
As you can see, we usually remove the * symbol to make the notation a little lighter.
Back to our example, boxbox can be interpreted as box*box = box²
But boxbox would never be interpreted as box+box = 2*box = 2box
To conclude, there is no doubt that boxbox = box²

It's only 2box if he was box+box. Boxbox implies (box) * (box) which would be box²
box^2 = boxbox since as an example 2^2=2*2 and 3^2=3*3 and in algebra as an example timesing is represented by letters being next to each other therefore box^2=boxbox
Yeah saying "1^2 = 1" as a counter example shows a fundamental misunderstanding of basic math. The only reason 1^2 is equal to 1 is because 1 x 1 = 1. It's literally the only number that behaves that way.

No, (BOX)^2 implies that B O X are all variables that need to be solved for, and putting them in parenthesis means you have to multiply them together, before you can operate the exponent.
