I thought it was wonderful. It was so good to see those woman detectives do so right what the Lynnwood detectives did so wrong. They bullied her out of taking a lie detector test. I was hooked on the series and watch it quickly to see if Marie finally got justice and I was so pleased when she did.
@Bsha Bs she said "that she's seen," which could mean that she's yet to see that show. But you shouldn't compare two shows that are different in perspectives. This show is about the victims, whereas when they see us is about systematic racism and the innocent being accused. Both shows are powerful and have a deep impact but comparing them isn't fair to either the show or the real people behind it.
@Sara Faisal I didn't finish When they see us because I just got so frustrated and irritated that I couldn't continue watching it. I should try watching it again cause I heard it's good
Tbh I think it's the best one I've seen. The way it was done is just so unique to anything I've seen. Having it primarily be from a woman's perspective, and show every uncomfortable detail of these processes of these things... It was powerful, that's the least I can say. I could go on and on about how I was blown away by this series. Nothing has ever touched me like that and been relatable on that level and felt like it will help to create real changes like men and investigators learning to listen more and learn to do better.
unfortunately its very sad but "truth" is very hard to assert. despite this i doubt that this set the police's mind. they tend to take testimony with a grain of salt. what matters more is facts of a story they try to corroborate the facts of the victims story with things that can be validated ( camera feeds, witness accounts etc) unfortunately for rape cases you ideally would like to assume that the victim is truthful unfortunately people ( not to say some women) are now using this as a weapon to destroy people's lives. even if the accusation is believable , the crime has to be proven beyond the shadow of the doubt otherwise the accused might go scott free. maybe the victim here changed her story ... even a little bit or was unable to provide some key details leading the initial investigators to question or doubt her statement. its imperative that women understand that false claims reduces the chances for the real victims. its also imperative for all victims to report physical abuse and rape as soon as it happened because otherwise details may become vague. if they need to, record the statement with a witness sooner rather than later.
Your anger is understandable but it is not their fault. It is the job of detectives to fully investigate a crime and keep their victim's interests in mind. NOT to be swayed but outside opinions.
@Abidjanaise I think you're glossing over the fact that she changed her own testimony multiple times before the detectives even began to question the case. I certainly don't fault Marie; people process trauma in different ways and a victim might block out or misremember certain details or timelines, but look at it from the detectives' POV- the only evidence you HAVE is the victim's testimony. And if major details are called into question... They had to try to see a broader picture. Don't forget two of her own foster mothers came forward (unsolicited) and expressed concerns about the truthfulness of her report.
@Patriarchy cult Is the beast system they never cracked a code to a disc they found with his other pictures and computer info, which was shown in the series, and is a factual disc in real life. They have never managed to decode it, and experts say they probably never will. It might be useless anyways, or might have other victims on file, murders, exc. We may never know.
It's weird, because women react like dudes that went to Nam or Iraq and were shot at and saw torture and IADs. Also, women usually are raped in wars too.
@Speaking Truth exactly. Now imagine if you invite a friend to your home, you drink together and he rapes you. He will say you consented, nobody was there to see, the whole society will say it doesn't matter if you consented because you got drunk so it's your fault. But the same people will say the guy was drunk, so he probably didn't know what he was doing, don't judge the poor guy... That's it.
What are you talking about? The cops were doing everything to help until she kept changing her story about what happened, the mom saying she has a history of doing stuff for attention, and they had no evidence that any raped happened. Those are the only reason she wasn’t believed. Had she told the truth she would have been believed. You really expect people to just believe her when she keeps telling different versions of what happened??
tristin wright she didn’t change he story - when she is told again and again to repeat her story - elements are going to change and this is what happened here. In the real report that researched what happened, they wrote that the police officers took minor inconsistencies that actually would have no effect on Marie’s believability. And if you watch the show, at the end when they catch him, he confesses that on the first crime scene he left a lot of DNA and was expecting them to find him immediately. However, because they treated her like a suspect and interrogated her instead of waking up and seeing the traumatizes person in front of them, they ruined a girls life even further and allowed it to happen to many more women. She did tell the truth, and even when she did, he foster mother had doubts because she reacted like a different person because news flash she is a different person. And so they proceeded to bully her and threaten her with jail time into lying and saying that she had made it up.
tristin wright also, if someone is robbed, do you ever doubt them?? So why, when it comes to rape, are some people so eager to doubt the victim -and don’t argue that they had reasons to. When convicting criminals we take the philosophy of “innocent until proven guilty”and yet here with victims we write them off almost immediately.
Seeing the second episode made teared up a bit. I felt really bad for Marie seeing how they should've handled the case. If only she got a decent detectives. She was basically a child for God's sake.
@@MARYWTHER Disagree. I don't think going for more money would've made you less noble of a person. We buy into being in a society for protection among other things. So when the body of government that is supposed to work for you makes your life hell... you get to seek retribution. To whatever extent you feel is right.
They should have more women in charge of dealing with the rape. Like send a female officer to the scene. I would feel uncomfortable talking to those guys. Like I’m not hating on men it’s just I would rather have a women questioning me
This was honestly one of the best shows I've seen in a while. It gives perspective to how the criminal justice system works or, in many cases doesn't work for sexual assault victims.
She deserved millions not 150,000$ but that just proves that she’s not greedy. Marie if you’re reading this THANK YOU for sharing your story, I’ve been accused of lying by cops before... I didn’t “act like the perfect victim.” I live in Canada. This inspires me / makes me feel less alone. Again. Thank you.
As someone who lives in Canada, I always thought that Canada is better than other countries as we are more accepting and open, but I have learned that there is so much injustice in Canada in every sense you can think of. I hope you doing better and even though I am a stranger my door is always open.
I just want to say I'm so sorry that people did not believe you when you told the cops. I live in Canada too, and I've never been through an experience like that, but my friend had something similar happen. My friend had her boyfriend but her, and the police said her bruises were self-inflicted and not evidence so they dismissed her. I also know of a teenage girl who was raped at 12 years old. The guy was caught and charged but he only went to jail for a year. He is out and free now even though he was found guilty of raping a child.
I said the same thing!!! They definitely didn't try to go the dramatic Law & Order SVU route, which was refreshing to see. My bf who is a police officer was also impressed as well with the series and how the depicted the law enforcement side. The arrest, the collection of evidence in the perp's home, etc. all made sense and wasn't over dramatized like a lot of crime shows on tv. Which I also think why this series resonated with a lot of people as well. It's believable, which also helps with the added emotion. I really didn't think I was going to get as emotionally invested as I did! I like SVU, but more often than not I'm left rolling my eyes when Benson SLAMS the perp against the wall and says a clever one liner. The detective, though showing her toughness of not backing down, didn't do that.
When I was 14 I was raped by a friend of my parents. He drugged me but I could still see everything and, more importantly, feel everything. After I managed to escape I went crying for my mom but she didn't believe me because he was "a nice, harmless old man". My friends completely bullied me saying I either made up that story or that I was overreacting for it "wasn't that bad because I was drugged". Looking back I don't blame them for their actions, they were only 14, and honestly had no idea how to deal with a situation like that. But I did feel completely hopeless and alone, I got suicidal and extremely depressed and anxious. No one, and i mean NO ONE could touch me, because i would get flashbacks and panic attacks. So when things started getting really bad my parents realized things weren't okay and that something really did happen. We filed a complaint (B.O. in Brazil) and a preliminary judicial investigation began.... Yet they couldn't recover any evidence of the assault, no camera footage of the street and house where it happened and no medical exam to back up my story. At the time, by law only female doctors could've dealt with rape victims, except there weren't any available for me, so they didn't even conduct an exam. Damage and trauma were STILL visible in my body (even though months had already passed), but the investigators (only men) ruled it out. So by the end of the judicial process, it was a 14-15 year old girl's voice against a respected army veteran. He walked out free without any charge. . Now, about 7 years later I'm in law school trying to prevent cases like mine ever happening again. ps: watching Unbelievable gave me chills afters chills. It was uncanny how similar our stories were, both assaulted by army veterans and mistreated by our social circles, the police and the judiciary system. It felt like reliving my teenage years, specially because they called her Marie, while my name is Maria.
@Merlionno I'm so sorry to hear what you went through, it must've been really hard for you. But it's really good to hear that you're doing something to change it through a small but impactful step
I’m so terribly sorry you went through this awful situation. Teens should to be protected not be a vessel for people’s half arsed projections, cruelty and stupidity.
It should never be two men that interview a rape victim. There should always be a female cop in the room as well. Or at least a third party that is just there to comfort and not question them.
@@grizzly_manbanimation8436 i think a boy would also feel more comfortable talking to a woman rather than a couple of jerks who could make him feel less of a man for crying or even complaining.
@@Laxa8xaxa7 I think it really depends on the man or woman they are talking to. Some guys can be sensitive enough to understand but others not so much and same goes for girls.
I want to see the reactions to everyone who doubted her when they finally know it was the truth and what they did after. Like what did the “friend” who backstabbed her do or felt. The foster mom who doubted her, etc. that’s what I’m curious about.
Those testimonies in court GOT ME. when she said something along the lines of “there are so many small moments of my life you’d think such a small moment like this would pass right by like the others but it doesn’t” and the other woman blaming herself asking what she did to make her a target. Bawling.
One more thing they got right -- casting Kaitlyn Dever. That girl is fucking amazing no matter what the role. Booksmart, Detroit, Short Term 12....even less starry roles like Eve in "Last Man Standing" (TV) or Cassie Drake in "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" (VG)
@@goahead-rk1232 exactly. I love that movie so much for both her and Brie Larson's performances, and it deserves so much more recognition than it's gotten
Brent Dreher It’s incredible. It came out during the time when I was working with kids and I related to it so much. I got it on dvd even though dvds are dead lol.
@@celinavasconcelos4393 I'm curious why Merritt got first billing and Toni got second as supporting. Kind of assume Kaitlyn Denver would be under actress then Merritt and Toni would be under supporting. Thrilled to see how many noms the series got in general!
I hope the people who betrayed Marie are watching this documentary and reading the comments. I curse those people to go through the same experience Marie went through. Not raped but being betrayed by the people they trust and having no one believe them. They honestly deserve all the hate they're getting and more. The police and the everyone involved who hurt Marie, i hate them all.
Probably better off to pray for these people and hope they see sense, forgiveness is best I think. It stops the violent cycle and lets everyone to move on in peace.
I understand how you feel. I think that to carry such hate you have to carry an equal amount of hurt. That's why I'm fairly sure that forgiveness at this point may seem silly. But I think what you want, more than people being punished, is peace on earth. I think what you want, more than the guilty (guilty of rape, guilty of betrayal, guilty of being ass holes to people who don't deserve it) being punished is to have the innocent never hurt again. All this starts with healing of your heart, with forgiveness. I can't tell you where evil truly comes from because I don't know. However, I know that many people affected by evil eventually do evil things themselves which cause other people to do evil, hurtful, traumatizing things as well. So instead of wanting them to hurt, we should wish them healing. We might think we're super good people, but in reality, holding on to hate modifies our perception and can make us do hurtful things without even realizing it. (I promise you this is true). Instead of wanting them to hurt we should wish for them to heal so that they never hurt anyone again. Instead of wanting them to hurt, we should forgive them so that they can forgive themselves and hopefully, in time, teach other people who need to forgive themselves how to do it. There are way more benefits to forgiveness and emotional healing then there are to fostering hate. And that's coming from a 29 year old woman who was abused by three different males between the ages of 2 and 12. And at one point, I hated them all. And I hated anyone who ever left me alone with them. Forgiveness doesn't mean hanging out with them and becoming buddies. It means wishing for their hurt to go away, wishing for your hurt to go away, wishing that you and them become better people. The only way that happens is if they become aware of the consequences of their actions. When they truly regret doing what they've done you know they're changing. And once an "abused"/"survivor" realizes it was never about them and always about the evil within their abusers then, they can start healing too. Good luck.
In my opinion I don’t know why anybody would believe her when she kept changing the story and details about what happened. Of course people aren’t going to believe her when she told multiple versions of what happened. Plus no evidence of break in and no evidence that rape had occurred. Plus she had a history of making up stuff and doing things to get attention
This whole series broke my heart but also in a way gave me comfort as a survivor of sexual assault. The police didn't believe me as well. To this day, he has yet to receive any kind of punishment. The police never even talked to him. The system for sexual assault victims is broken and needs to be fixed.
Honestly, the way those male detectives treated Marie was just bullshit, I was picking up a sense that Detective Parker wasn't getting his own say and actually believed Marie but was forced to follow along with the other guy.
I hate how her friends turned on her ! They should have had her back, and talked to her about it. I feel like they put zero effort into being good supportive friends. The only one who tried was Connor
it's the sensitivity that the women took in the case that really let the victims feel comfortable enough to disclose everything they could to help bring this case to justice.
Yeah, there's no way that was a coincidence. Women are more inclined to understand sexual assault cases. But the male detectives wrote it off and kept finding problems with the case and were ready to be done with it. Even going so far as to charge the victim!
Those WA detectives, they were unbelievable. How can they call themselves detectives when they did nothing for Marie? At least one had the decency to apologize but just because she had the courage they didn't to look them in the eyes and say you ruined my life. The one standing in the back, ugh.. disgusting. But the two Colorado detectives were amazing. Glad Marie moved away.
To an extent I agree, however I can sympathize a little that there was little evidence to support what she said. But they did definitely put words in her mouth and make her say things which is disgusting
@@hannahcollings6358 Did you watch the how because the rapist literally admits to leaving A LOT of his DNA at her place and if the police had done their job properly they would have traced his DNA back to him right away. But the detectives were complete and utter trash and when after Marie while ignoring the evidence right in front of their eyes.
Yeah totally! Even tho I do feel sorry for the cop, because he did seem torn about the case and it seemed like a classic case of "we don't have evidence we have to close this off" and he wasn't as near as pushy as the other cop, the one who totally DID NOT apologize for anything, and whom Marie didn't held accountable (which I thought was... unsatisfying lol, he really was the one deserving to be dragged in the mud for how he treated her or even talked about her behind her back)
@@MARYWTHER couldn't agree more about the olded cop. He just stood there and was a complete jerk. What bothers me is that they didn't even revidw her medical exam agter the attack. Why didn't they? I'm sure that would had help them believed her. It's sad.
I have never been more embarrassed to have lived in Lynwood, WA. Honestly, the majority of Washington state police officers and detectives are terrible.
#7. These women should be ashamed of themselves for doubting Marie. It's because of one of them that the police began to doubt Marie's truthfulness. Shame on both of them! #2. I'm surprised Marie didn't sue the media as well.
@Pepper52435 I don't think that's a fair generalization to make; there are many foster mothers out there who are loving and caring, and some biological mothers who aren't.
@Pepper52435 If they were no substitute for a loving mother, and didn't truly know her, then they should've just stayed quiet. They had no right getting involved in the case.
I saw this series all the way through the other night. I didnt go to bed till 5am. I was hooked. Its so worth watching if you havent. I hope they make more series with these actors in it. Because i loved them all.
As someone who has been sexually assaulted by multiple men this was very hard for me to watch on Netflix as the commercials I saw for the show were not showing that the show was about rape. After watching the first 20 mins I had severe panic attacks and anxiety attacks woke up screaming from flash backs almost every night. I was sexually assaulted 10 years ago and I’m back in therapy for the anxiety and panic attacks. I absolutely hate how this girl was treated thru the whole process. I couldn’t cry any harder for her if I tried. I am so glad her rapist was caught and she finally got justice.
She should have been awarded so much more . I really hope that she did in her subsequent dealings. She deserved so much more for the hell they put her through a second time
I related to her alot and found myself just wanting it to be over too. Especially when no one seems to believe what happened to you and blame you for it happening. Its too much to deal with all at once. I just hope now that she has loving people around her .....some of us get lucky lol.
All these actresses were so good tho. Incredible. Especially Kaitlyn Dever and Merrit Wever, amazing! I was also very pleased with Danielle Macdonald's performance, since I only saw her in Dumplin' before this.
Such a heartbreaking story, I feel like the Washington police, the people in charge of the housing she stayed in and the people who attacked her relentlessly should have faced harsher repercussions. Don’t act until you know the FULL STORY
Unbelievable was absolutely amazing. Me and my mom both watched it apart from each other and were absolutely blown away. It is a really heavy theme but they just told it in a phenomenal way!
That friend that turned on her, if you see this: I hope you never have peace or rest. You are disgusting and I hope that you never have to endure her pain. This shame will stay with you for the rest of your life and I hope it weighs on you.
The real things Unbelievable got it right, is the attitude of every public safety department, how it should be and how it should not be. The attitude of a detective how to talk to a victim and how serious they should take someone's pain. How many types of victims can be there.. Whats the right thing to do, Who should the responsibility.. And much more.. Of course.. The lead actors are truly unbelievable...especially Karen ( Wever)
my mother was a rape victim that luckily became a survivor and i got to know a support group of other victims and the way to cops and detectives responded and treated this character( well the real Mary) is SADLY how MANY victims are treated. They don't believe you, try to make you "admit" it didn't happen, question "why you didn't you get help sooner," "why didn't you tell this person why that person", & "why won't you tell us certain details", "how do you not remember" ," how and why are you confused". "you didn't remember this detail then but you remember it now" "why didn't you fight back harder if you"didn't give consent" " ect.... And people and bystanders treated them EXACTLY like this. The people that "care tend to be the cruelest. I truly hate but appreciate how accurate and realistic this show was. It touched down hard on many issues in just a few episodes. Also My prayers to Marie, survivors and victims. NO-ONE should EVER be put through this. You are all such a strong and brave people( I didn't specify women specifically because men fall victim as well and I feel like this should be acknowledged.) & I commend her for sharing her pain, sadness, and trauma.
The Caccon House in Lynnwood has written on their website: "Breaking the cycle of homelessness". But with their behavior they actually contributed to the opposite: Not believing the victim, isolating her, making the rules three times more strict for her, reminding her everyday that she "screwed up". They made an already very vulnerable person even more vulnerable. I know they thought they were holding her accountable but I just can't wrap my head around the fact that none of those social workers questioned the situation. No one thought of the fact that false rape reports are extremely rare. No one entertained the idea that maybe something else was going on. I'm glad the real Marie sued them. I hope they learned from their mistakes.
LOVED this role for the lead actress. I remember her when she was in Bad Teacher. Funny, but this was a great role for her. I like the subtle way that they portray "girl power" in a way. It's not in your face. I hope Netflix will get with the program and stop ending great short series! Keep them going! Bring us a new season of something like this!
What I don't understand is why Marie had to keep going back and forth with her statement in the series. It made me go nuts and wanted to believe her so badly but maybe because of the experience and the way two male detectives interviewed her and her foster parents even doubted her because of the way she was acting before.
I watched this series twice. Its excruciating to watch the scenes w/ these old men interrogate a very young, insecure RAPE victim in the 2000's!! Not the 1940's or 50's. It's like they've never seen an episode of Law & Order SVU. It was hard to believe that these male detectives had ZERO training on how to treat a RAPE VICTIM. Would they treat their mother, sister, daughters like that if they were Raped? The acting & writing are so on point they got it right! The way those male detectives victimized the victim was very cruel to watch. I hope she is doing well in life and wish Marie many many blessings. She's a survivor and should be admired.
The scene in the counselors office killed me. The girl almost killed herself because of the enormously incompetent adults / professionals that were supposed to care for her. They all failed her with a capital F.
This is happening right now in a court in Cyprus. A 19 year old British girl claimed she was assaulted by 11 Israelis and subsequently changed her story during questioning. The young men were released and immediately and jubilantly left Cyprus for home. She is now saying she was forced to change her story and the original claim was true. Text messages between the men support her story of assault. Most women here in the UK believe her. Her ordeal in court is terrible. Google it for more details.
I loved the series, but i felt the real villain was that one foster mom - Judith/Peggy (real name) who told the police Marie might be fabricating the rape. Like how the hell do you make the leap from a troubled teenager's attention seeking behaviour to fabricating a rape? I absolutely wanted her to lose her fostering license!! Throughout the series she is the one who's cynical and selfish towards Marie. I hope Marie has realised this and no loger speaks to her.
I love how Ms. Mojo clearly stated the real-life Judith's name: Peggy Cunningham. That woman should never be allowed to foster children, again... ever.
SHE DESERVE THE APOLOGIES AND ALL THE MONEY SHE GOT!! SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OPEN APOLOGY FROM THOSE DETECTIVES IN LYNWOOD WHO OPENLY TOLD REPORTERS ITS A FALSE REPORT!
I just wantched this show. So Sad how these male dectives treated the victim. Thank you Netflix for raising awareness. I hope dective parker was disciplined and forced into training and learned from his mistakes . What this poor young lady suffered.
Just finished the series...inspiring the two detectives work, believing, and standing for the truth, and stellar detective work, working the details. Very moving, and just brilliant acting from all involved!
I live in this area and one time had to call this police department- they ended up telling me that i shouldnt ever say i have PTSD because it makes my report unreliable.
just watch it (finally) and it was amazingly done. the sentencing almost made me scream YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and that last phone call made me feel so happy.
Netflix has a lot of garbage but this show makes up the 5% of really good stuff worth binge watching. The pace is a bit slow on purpose to reflect how real life investigation works but the acting is top notch especially from Kaytlin Dever.
Marie is a remarkable person . She could have sued for millions but rather then take advantage of her mistreatment and use it as a excuse for greed she stood up with dignity and showed a level of integrity and character well in excess of that displayed by those who were supposed to stand by her , stand up for her and get paid to protect and defend her and the rest of us. I applaud her and hope she and her family live in uninterrupted happiness for the rest of her days. She truly is a person the rest of us should take lessons from .
Binged "Unbelievable" and came away 1) Amazed by the incredible acting of Wever, Collette and Dever. 2) Stunned the any rape victim would be interviewed by a man or men. The cases should be run by women with a back-up (perhaps a man). The procedural portion of this limited series is incredible. This shows how a real (good) police investigation is run and how much it matters to the detectives and officers working it.
So now society has to provide him food, shelter, medical care, entertainment, and even education for the rest of his life. At a cost of about 3.25 million dollars. Somehow, we call this justice. Ironically, his unconscionable acts have secured for him a better life than millions of homeless Americans can hope for. If there is no hope whatsoever that he might live long enough to be paroled, then shouldn't the death penalty replace his sentence?
My biggest fear, above anything else, is having people not believe me. It's going through the same thing that Marie went through. It broke me when no one believed her and everyone turned on her. Im having a hard time getting past episode 2.
I gotta say that the two actors playing the detectives when she reported the rape were outstanding. That's why everybody hated them! They played the bad cops to the hilt! I've seen this movie three times and it's because all the actors were truly great in their roles.
It’s a sad story and sad that it’s horrific story of someone’s life. But the best part of this show was marie calling the detective and thanking her. Justice system gotta do better.

Unbelievable is hands down the best true crime show I've seen this year.
@Bsha Bs she said "that she's seen," which could mean that she's yet to see that show. But you shouldn't compare two shows that are different in perspectives. This show is about the victims, whereas when they see us is about systematic racism and the innocent being accused. Both shows are powerful and have a deep impact but comparing them isn't fair to either the show or the real people behind it.
alright The Act is pretty good
@Sara Faisal I didn't finish When they see us because I just got so frustrated and irritated that I couldn't continue watching it. I should try watching it again cause I heard it's good
Absolutely!!
I'm so mad with Marie's foster moms... It's their fault police didn't believe her😤😤 how could they easily say she was lying?
unfortunately its very sad but "truth" is very hard to assert. despite this i doubt that this set the police's mind. they tend to take testimony with a grain of salt. what matters more is facts of a story they try to corroborate the facts of the victims story with things that can be validated ( camera feeds, witness accounts etc) unfortunately for rape cases you ideally would like to assume that the victim is truthful unfortunately people ( not to say some women) are now using this as a weapon to destroy people's lives. even if the accusation is believable , the crime has to be proven beyond the shadow of the doubt otherwise the accused might go scott free. maybe the victim here changed her story ... even a little bit or was unable to provide some key details leading the initial investigators to question or doubt her statement. its imperative that women understand that false claims reduces the chances for the real victims. its also imperative for all victims to report physical abuse and rape as soon as it happened because otherwise details may become vague. if they need to, record the statement with a witness sooner rather than later.
Your anger is understandable but it is not their fault. It is the job of detectives to fully investigate a crime and keep their victim's interests in mind. NOT to be swayed but outside opinions.
@@romeoneverdies just to note, they don't give male victims a chance either. Look how they gave Michael Jackson's accusers the third degree.

I was so fascinated by this story so glad she got justice in the end

The thing about trauma is that everyone can react differently. PTSD can cause weird reactions.
Chrystal Frost I just cried reading this. I’m going through it
Indeed!
It's weird, because women react like dudes that went to Nam or Iraq and were shot at and saw torture and IADs. Also, women usually are raped in wars too.
True. I had ptsd at the age of one. Didn't even know that until my adult years. Even in old age, I still freak out in stressful situations
PTSD is a real set of reactions on your body and mind it can manifest in many different situations in life and in different moments of your life !!
It’s crazy how if they never found those photos of her , she would’ve never had justice
I reeaaalllllyy wish they showed that counseling organization getting comeuppance. They were horrible.
@@AB-nk5wv The real Marie sued them and they settled. The organisation is called "Cocoon House" in Lynnwood, WA.
@@AB-nk5wvI wanted to see that too
This is why women don’t report
@Speaking Truth exactly. Now imagine if you invite a friend to your home, you drink together and he rapes you. He will say you consented, nobody was there to see, the whole society will say it doesn't matter if you consented because you got drunk so it's your fault. But the same people will say the guy was drunk, so he probably didn't know what he was doing, don't judge the poor guy... That's it.
exactly...🥺
The first and second episode set this up so well , you see two different way the police approach two different victims
Seeing the second episode made teared up a bit. I felt really bad for Marie seeing how they should've handled the case. If only she got a decent detectives. She was basically a child for God's sake.
Re Ef Yes I agree, police should watch this they didn’t only hurt her but all the other victims by not following up properly
I was infuriated by the way they handled things and found myself shouting at the TV quite a lot.
yes, the juxtaposition between the two episodes perfectly sets up the series. and it shows you how not to and hot to treat a sexual assault victim.
i got so angry when I saw the 500.00 check. im glad she sued them and the other place as well. good for her...
Yeah me too, like... what a slap in the face after everything she’s been through!!
I know she didn’t want to but Marie should have sued the pants off of that city
Yeah I would have. She's a bigger person than I'd ever be.
@@MARYWTHER Disagree. I don't think going for more money would've made you less noble of a person. We buy into being in a society for protection among other things. So when the body of government that is supposed to work for you makes your life hell... you get to seek retribution. To whatever extent you feel is right.

I'm sick (I have a cold) and I binged watched it because I cant do anything . And I have no regrets either
They should have more women in charge of dealing with the rape. Like send a female officer to the scene. I would feel uncomfortable talking to those guys. Like I’m not hating on men it’s just I would rather have a women questioning me
Or better yet, ask the victim if they'd be more comfortable with another officer
I agree
This was honestly one of the best shows I've seen in a while. It gives perspective to how the criminal justice system works or, in many cases doesn't work for sexual assault victims.
She deserved millions not 150,000$ but that just proves that she’s not greedy.
Marie if you’re reading this THANK YOU for sharing your story, I’ve been accused of lying by cops before... I didn’t “act like the perfect victim.” I live in Canada.
This inspires me / makes me feel less alone.
Again.
Thank you.
AJ Blake, maybe if she didn’t tell different versions of what happened then people would believe her
@@tristinwright7774 trauma does that. And having to relive it and tell your story over and over is torture.
As someone who lives in Canada, I always thought that Canada is better than other countries as we are more accepting and open, but I have learned that there is so much injustice in Canada in every sense you can think of. I hope you doing better and even though I am a stranger my door is always open.
tristin wright - You act like she did it on purpose. She was traumatized. Why are you blaming her?
I just want to say I'm so sorry that people did not believe you when you told the cops.
I live in Canada too, and I've never been through an experience like that, but my friend had something similar happen. My friend had her boyfriend but her, and the police said her bruises were self-inflicted and not evidence so they dismissed her. I also know of a teenage girl who was raped at 12 years old. The guy was caught and charged but he only went to jail for a year. He is out and free now even though he was found guilty of raping a child.
Watching this as a man, I have learned so much. I promise to listen to women a lot better than I do now.
Just try to remember, women are also people who are just as complex and valid as you are.
Thats all we want is to be heard and treated fairly as we all should be. Thank you for wanting to do better.
AvgJane19 word
That’s completely fair. Just listen
That's what everyone should do. No matter the gender. Just listen the other person and don't judge.
I love how they didn't add any car chases or the suspect running from police for added drama. The true story was good enough.
Don.t forget something exploding! I agree! Needed none of that false action, the truth was intense enough!
omg yes, I was afraid of that but they was so honest and careful about everything
I'm so sorry to hear about what you went through. I hope you are doing well now. I hope for karma to the person who did this to you.
Just asking but what if that rape victim was a boy. Don’t look at me like that, it happens.
@@grizzly_manbanimation8436 reynhard sinaga rape 136 men in three years. Happens.

Three brilliant actors. So proud of them. I love this show. Brilliant.
Way to live your life on emotions.
Please don't hold on to hate, it is not worth it. Remember: Karma is Real
Speaking Truth I know it’s reality. In the word of Monica “it sucks”
Wait but I’m confused cause she said she was lying, why would she say she was lying if she was telling the truth
@@lizethmartinez6259 because the police officers push her and doubt on her
it's the sensitivity that the women took in the case that really let the victims feel comfortable enough to disclose everything they could to help bring this case to justice.

It seems like the investigators that interrogated Marie had the mindset of guilty until proven innocent instead of innocent until proven guilty.
Wow I almost expected to hate this limited series or find it depressing or boring. But I was wrong after the first episode I was definitely hooked.
I watched it twice within a week, rarely do I rewatch a show so quickly. It is incredible. Major props to Kaitlyn Dever who is an sensational actor
Wow, despite whther she took it or not, I can't believe they only offered her 150,000 dollars smh
All these actresses were so good tho. Incredible.
Especially Kaitlyn Dever and Merrit Wever, amazing! I was also very pleased with Danielle Macdonald's performance, since I only saw her in Dumplin' before this.
Check out every secret thing, Danielle is excellent in that too, totally different kind of chararacter.
It is a really heavy theme but they just told it in a phenomenal way!
i can't imagine watching the scene with my mom where you see him stark naked for at least 80 seconds... AWKWARD!
That friend that turned on her, if you see this: I hope you never have peace or rest. You are disgusting and I hope that you never have to endure her pain. This shame will stay with you for the rest of your life and I hope it weighs on you.
can't imagine the 2 Male detectives went through the failure of investigation, they must be demoted or resigned to their rank, so incompetent.
I love how this list is like: it’s all right, they got pretty much everything right
The Caccon House in Lynnwood has written on their website: "Breaking the cycle of homelessness".
I loved this series. The casting especially for detectives is so good the resemblance and style to clothing.
I watched it. I really liked it. I was confused about the flashbacks at first though. I didn't realize that she was the first victim for awhile.
It was a great show, but very triggering for me as a rape victim from years ago.
Oh Ellen. That’s dreadful. I do hope you got proper counselling and care x
I've watched it and watching your video has just made me start crying.
It’s disgusting that she had to suffer through that only to not be believed and then charged with a false report 🙄
I’m glad she finally got justice
LOVED this role for the lead actress. I remember her when she was in Bad Teacher. Funny, but this was a great role for her. I like the subtle way that they portray "girl power" in a way. It's not in your face. I hope Netflix will get with the program and stop ending great short series! Keep them going! Bring us a new season of something like this!
Shoutout to Netflix 🙌
What I don't understand is why Marie had to keep going back and forth with her statement in the series. It made me go nuts and wanted to believe her so badly but maybe because of the experience and the way two male detectives interviewed her and her foster parents even doubted her because of the way she was acting before.
Kaitlyn Denver is an amazing actress, she deserves more credit
I'M SO SORRY SO MANY PEOPLE FAILED YOU, MARIE.
Loved this show I went through so many emotions throughout the story
I loved the series, but i felt the real villain was that one foster mom - Judith/Peggy (real name) who told the police Marie might be fabricating the rape. Like how the hell do you make the leap from a troubled teenager's attention seeking behaviour to fabricating a rape? I absolutely wanted her to lose her fostering license!! Throughout the series she is the one who's cynical and selfish towards Marie. I hope Marie has realised this and no loger speaks to her.
I love how Ms. Mojo clearly stated the real-life Judith's name: Peggy Cunningham. That woman should never be allowed to foster children, again... ever.
This series made me so angry and now to know that it is a true story! I have no more words.
SHE DESERVE THE APOLOGIES AND ALL THE MONEY SHE GOT!! SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OPEN APOLOGY FROM THOSE DETECTIVES IN LYNWOOD WHO OPENLY TOLD REPORTERS ITS A FALSE REPORT!
yo.. if you haven't watched the show, DON'T watch this.. its full of spoilers and really good ones.. watch the series before you come here
I just wantched this show.
The Male detectives specially Parker was genuinely and effectively annoying...
i felt like the other one was worse... at least parker felt remorse and the need to do something with that.
Oh yeah to me the other one was way worse than Parker...
This series really shows how broken the system is
Every detective should have to watch this show! That's all...
Victims go through so much more than the initial violation.... They are violated over and again.
It's very good series. I started it Monday and now finished it. 💯💯
This show was brutally amazing.
Her foster mom's are responsible of all of this.
Loved this series. I totally binge-watched it.
Wow. I cried so much.
I hope all those women heal from the horrible wounds that man made in their lives.
And I hope he rots in jail.
The system if set up to protect sexual predators and punish the victims especially female victims
I gotta say that the two actors playing the detectives when she reported the rape were outstanding. That's why everybody hated them!
They played the bad cops to the hilt!
I've seen this movie three times and it's because all the actors were truly great in their roles.
What a strong women....
It’s a sad story and sad that it’s horrific story of someone’s life. But the best part of this show was marie calling the detective and thanking her. Justice system gotta do better.
This series was AMAZING! binged it in 3 days
Why wasn’t she seen initially by female officers? Surely that’s a given?
