Seeing these clips, one thing is clear about Melee. As competitive as it is, there is so much love everyone's got for the game and for each other. Long live Melee
After constantly playing Melee and Brawl with my brothers growing up, but never having the ability to go to tournaments (aside from one in early smash 4 and one at the very beginning of ultimate that my college dorms hosted), smash has been in my life for nearly as far as I could remember. I wasn’t invested in the community until watching the Hbox Documentary during the pandemic, but since then, this community has continually impressed me with how wild everything can get, and I’ve started the effort of going to locals in my region, and somehow making the drive to compete in the Ult and Brawl brackets in smash con this past year. The Pennsylvania smash bros community has made me not just a better gamer, but a better man, and I do mean that. Thanks to them, I’ve had the confidence and drive to host my own tournament for Ultimate in my county, which they never had before due to the low vocal demand. This is a community that has struggled and been in a plethora of dark ages, but I hope that it continues to live on for years to come
Another excellent addition to the compendium of smash documentaries that highlight and archive the incredible history of the most fascinating and storied eSport of all time. Thanks for what you do Walt, 20 years later and I still love this game and love watching the community grow and thrive. 10/10 from me.
I feel like this channel is such defining part of this era of melee. Like, when I think back on what the Zain-Cody-Mango era was like in 10 years, these videos are what ill remember. Culture.
An absolute amazing look back at last year. As someone who has watched and enjoyed watching Melee since the first one I watched live, Evo 2016. This documentary and love letter to one of the best years Melee has ever had cements itself as a story we won’t ever forget
I watch your stuff sometimes, and fall out other times algorythmically, so I was hyped for the best of 10 match, and ended up not even knowing what happened until now. Thanks for keeping people like me in and catching us up. I knew Swedish from school, and hadn't heard about his placements since he first explained the 5 gods to me after an 8th place in singles in 2013. So hearing him win doubles when I didn't know he still played was a trip, especially since he won a tournament bracket where all the old gods happened to be absent! You're just a fantastic storyteller. So many stories getting covered in their zeitgeist. Thanks for it. I'll be sure to contribute if I ever get a few paychecks ahead.
This labor of love really shows. It felt like such an emotional rollercoaster, a revisiting of all the highlights and best moments from what was quite possibly the greatest year of Melee to date. Such a deep exploration of all the many intersecting storylines, all culminating in The Match. Something like this next year for 2024 would be incredible, because I have a feeling that Melee is only going to keep getting better.
I'm glad to see that Riptide did get reclassified as a Major after the 2023 end-of-year ranking. Really fun tournament that absolutely deserves the status, and it makes Plup a 2023 Major winner!
Damn, this video really made me tear up at the end lol It was a great year to be a viewer of Melee, and these videos from you really help me understand and appreciate the storylines and the work these players do to get where they are. I'm looking forward to the rest of 2024 and the eventual year recap video from you, the best Melee content creator.
Walt your story telling is among some of the best. Your videos do so much to fuel my own passions, as well as truly understand the gravity of Melee's competitive landscape. I'm a full time WoW creator now, its so nice to know if I miss a major I got someone to make this level of video to help remind me how sick Smash is
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I’m an on again off again melee fan and having a massive year recap like this is great in catching me up to speed. This vid was awesome and keep it up👍
What a BANGER video! We don’t deserve so many incredibly talented creators and voices in Melee, but we are blessed to have them. Can’t wait for next year’s recap!
I forgot about how fun the first couple months of 2023 were as a CLG fan. It felt so amazing to have a true contender the org. Pretty much haven't watched Smash or League of Legends since MSG decided to murder CLG because I have no one to root for. Fuck Madison Square Garden
I love how at the beginning of the year, it was "he quit Starbucks for this" and at the end of the year, it was "he quit law school for this." 2023 was the year I really started to appreciate Melee play. Even if the elitists acting like it's a perfect game ruin a lot of the enjoyment
Yo, I havent watched this yet but I know its going to be a banger. Thank you for all you do Walt, you are truly the 🐐 for melee content! Cant wait to sit down and watch this
I loved the video, but the video should be named the competitive melee history 2023, and i thought you gonna do a retrospective of all melee big wins, not only 2023, but is good anyways
Hey, Walt, could we get a documentary in the future about Smash Doubles? It's the unsung side of Melee, and I have a feeling there's a ton of great stories and rivalries in the history. I only know of Pewfat and the Armada-Android as far as teams go, but none of their trials and victories, and I'm sure others feel the same.
With that title I thought this was going to be about ALL of melee. Not just 2023. I mean this is cool but I was stoked for a mini doc to send to people.
NGL, love all your content, but if you don't have time personally, I would love to see someone you put up to do a breakdown of every melee tournament using your style. Would love to be able to quickly get a recap of any specific tourney with your style, but realize you have bigger videos to make.
Fantastic video, I can only imagine the effort you put into all of these projects!! Got 1 minor complaint Just a little Genesis 9 and Genesis X mixup at 43:28
2saint one of the three that did that whole top 3 bracket for an entire day for a qualifier right? Whatever it was it’s clear he worked hard to succeed and I hope the best for him

idk what it is but Zain beatboxing on mic while a drunk hbox sloppily dances with his shirt fully open is truly the heart of melee
FlameIsLucky: _"In a Biblical sense, Genesis is when god created man. In Melee, Genesis is when man became god."_

Oh shit, fellow PA melee people! Keep up the drive man :D

oh my god Cody schwab????? I love cody schwab so much. I cody my schwab til she complain on twitter that no one likes him after winning a major
Loser and misogynist, nice combo
1:28:23 damn the game really didn't want Amsa to win that one
ironic considering it's on a Yoshi stage as well
