  • Chinese money has transformed the once-sleepy backpacker destination of Sihanoukville, Cambodia into a gambling resort hub with 30 casinos, and 70 more being built. It's touted as the "New Macau".
But all that new wealth is eluding many local Cambodian businesses - which are being shunted aside.

    About the show:
It was a legendary trading route that for thousands of years connected Europe with Asia, and ancient Rome with Ancient China. Known as the Silk Road, it stretched through some of the most rugged terrain in the world 2000 years ago.
Now modern China is building a new Silk Road. The New Silk Road, also known as the One Belt One Road plan, is a hugely ambitious initiative launched by Presdent Xi Jinping in 2013. It will link up over 65 countries and 4.4 billion people. That is about 60 percent of the world’s population.
Channel NewsAsia’s documentary team has travelled across the globe to 7 regions to investigate what the Silk Road means for individuals, companies and countries. The epic journey will take viewers from the future ports of China to naval bases in the Philippines, to safaris in Africa, wushu schools in Iran and ghettos in Greece.
The program received an Award for Best Documentary (International Affairs) at the New York Festivals.

Most of Cambodian lazy, chinese people they work very hard. What is the weaknesses of Cambodian. Do you know ? I assume you don’t know. First lazy, drinking, not well-educated I speak the truth. I can + the question is how to fight back? The government is supporting the Chinese business which is why prices changed. If we protest, we will certainly get shot down by the police. I think it’s already too late now because during China early business there were no uprising.

I like Vietnam. The Chinese wouldn't dare to trample their nation like that. Actually, they did try up North in border town like Quang Ninh where there were $0 tours in which the Chinese tourists are brought to Chinese shops (hoding behind Vietnamese names) only. Knowing this, the Vietnamese govetnment got rid them rightaway. The Vietnamese are very vigilant about that.

Made in China. The Chinese has only one thing in mind... "MONEY".
      HOW TO MAXIMISE PROFITS
      HOW TO CREATE INFRUSTRUCTURE
      HOW TO BEAT THEIR COMPETITORS
If there's pollution, damaged ecosystem that's not on the sole businesses, it's for the government to deal with.
Look at China's major cities, Massive highways all blocked up, over populated, high disprecrencies between the rich and poor.

The casino gambling business is getting more competitive and challenging with each passing day. Many Singaporeans are gambling for a living and enjoy the mobility via land transport to move between casinos in Malaysia, Vietnam, Kampuchea and now Laos. And, they are giving Singapore a missed or boycott due to entry levy.

And as a service frontliner we have to change.
Maybe the restaurant owner just need to spend USD50-100 for a menu with multiple languages(khmer, english and mandarin),
And another USD50-100 for a mandarin signboard.
I believe if he does this, his business will be much better than before since the number of tourist there grown multiple times.

It happens everywhere in the world. American fast foods opened in China, and guess how many local Chinese food restaurants were going to close?

These local people doesn't know how to development of the town, Chinese has give them better living style and luxurious touch to their life, remember, when their wasn't Trump Towers in US people didn't know or heard about it, but later people learnt from Trump life and style, and made him president when they feel he can make a real change, think about it, when poor backpackers were here land wasn't having any values, and see how, a poor man now can sale his shop or house in couple of million $, try to understand, the One Road & One Belt or Silk Route is changing people life, its game changer program from China to the world, its all about sharing and growth of business and life and style, when American do it , its called progress when Chinese do it same, they called it, destroying life, what nonsense, if the restaurant man improve his restaurant quality and and maintain standard he will have more customers, bcx Cambodian earning handsome amount from Chinese, Chinese are paying 1000 times extra then locals. Now please stop it. Totally disagree with this misguided report. Talk with logic not with stupidity, What has American given to the world we all knew it very well.

Chinese don't just eat chinese food. They will try foreign food as well, provided the food is nice and reasonably priced. Just like any tourist, this is human nature.
China investment is about trade, infrastructures like roads and bridges etc, not casinos. It is the Cambodia government rights to accept or reject the financing, nobody forced them to agree. Cambodia government has the rights and full control of the country's future, not China.
The restaurant owner should find ways like get chinese to cook for him, changed the local food styles to suit foreigners taste buds and not sit there moaning.
Nothing stays unchanged, if you accept and see the changes as an opportunity, you will survive.

The Cambodian government is laughing their way to the bank from all the taxes levied on the casino operators. The bulk of the profits go into Chinese operators which in turn goes to China. Come on Cambodia, China is not stupid. They are one of the most unscrupulous businessmen in the world. They target most of the 3rd world countries like Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam etc... Guess all these 'beggar' countries need the money. So, its a win win situation but more win to China of course. If not control stringently, this casino and gambling establishment set up will caused lots of social problems later for the Cambodian government and the people of Sihanokville.

That guy at the end who lost business due to no western tourists going to Cambodia is so racist when he claims Chinese people only eat at Chinese restaurants because they want to support their own kind. Me being Chinese myself, I know this is BS, because as a Chinese, Chinese food to me is comfort food, theres no hidden agenda or discrimination with our taste in food.
