  • Story Of Meenakshi Amman Temple
If you search online for the term ‘most famous temples of South India’, chances are that you will find the mention and picture of a tall monument that has become the iconic image of the beautiful temple architecture of the south. This is the story of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a landmark monument with more than 30,000 sculptures. The Meenakshi Amman Temple is located in the temple city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, on the southern bank of the Vaigai River. This historic temple is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi, a form of Shakti, and her consort, Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. The temple's name, ‘Meenakshi,’ is derived from the words ‘meena’ and ‘akshi’, which means eyes like the shape of a fish, symbolizing the beautiful eyes of devi. The name ‘Sundar’ means ‘the handsome one’, denoting Shiva’s beauty. The temple is a celebration of the divine union between Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. According to legends, Meenakshi, a young princess with three breasts, was born to King Malayadwaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamala. It was prophesied that she would marry Lord Shiva, and when she does, her third breast would disappear.

I was fortunate to have visited this beautiful temple last November, being of Indian descent born in SA, I have vitiligo and look Caucasian due to this, after waiting in the queue to enter main temple the security will not allow me to enter, I asked him why and felt hurt when he pushed me aside to allow the people behind me to proceed, I felt so sad and started crying, showing the security my passport which shows my Indian name, after 5 minutes I was jolstered away to another security who seemed in higher authority and explained my disappointment and embarrassment on how I was treated. He took pity on me and wrote something on paper and gave a priest to take me directly to the main shrine off the MOTHER, the joy I felt, all I could say I felt soo blessed and I know it was the MOTHER who Orchestrated this drama. It was worth every bit of what I went through and I now understand the will of the MOTHER. Om Shakti Om Amman. ❤
