1987 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ61 Project part 2: H55F -Gearbox and transfer teardown and diagnosis!

  • I took apart the H55F -gearbox and transfer case of my HJ61 and found some wear. The gearbox worked ok, some minor rattle in neutral, at idle could be heard after highway drive, when the oil gets hot and thin. Some vibrations at low rpm and especially on fourth gear could be felt. It didn't pop out of gear or anything like that. 2nd and 3rd need a little attention to shift but it's more like a feature in these old boxes I think. The main reason to do this rebuild is that I want to make sure that gearbox, transfer and power take off are strong and reliable... and because I've been dreaming a long time of rebuilding a gearbox without any hurry and learning more of them :)

    Really helpful video , I borrowed your idea on the DIY bearing puller hooks , I just made them heavy as possible but still able to slip behind the bearings. My first legs were too thin and bent too. Already had a hydraulic puller set so I welded these 2 legs to some 30mm square tube then the puller legs slipped in the tube.
    My H55F gearbox was slipping out of 5th gear . Couldn't see any wear on the synchro or teeth but later found the 5th counter gear is 2 pieces , not solid , the spline was worn between the hub and gear, pretty sure this is the problem, has a snap ring which I removed but couldn't get the hub off. Decided to clean best as possible then squirted some Loctite 680 retaining compound in the spline. It's taken up the wear slack, not sure if it will ast though. Found spline wear on the small 5th driven gear and 3rd /4th syncho hub , both just slid off the mainshaft , thought these were a press fit? Going to fit a modified long spline transfer case input gear ( spline worn again...) have to leave the PTO gear out , but I'm not planning on using it, 99% owners never use PTO I think.
    Waiting on bearings , gaskets etc , it's a big job.....

    This is a great video for someone like me who has yet to tear down my H55F but am planning to this coming summer for new synchros and to put a low range gear set in my tcase. Also I want that PTO gearbox....

      Thanks! Enjoy your H55F rebuild! PTO gearboxes don't seem to be very common.

    Hi, are you doing a rebuild video still? I found your tear down video excellent and thorough, I was really looking forward to watch reassembly video. I am soon to do a H55F rebuild and it seems everyone who does a tear down video doesn’t do the follow up for some reason?

      Hi! Unfortunately I don't have time or a decent computer atm to edit more videos😐 Have fun rebuilding your H55F👍

    The A440F transmission has a shim between the transmission output shaft bearing and the front cover of the Transfer case. Does the H55 set up have a shim as well?

    How many kms had this gearbox done?
    Hard life?
    Regular servicing?
    Thanks for the help

    Did you need a puller to take out the front input shaft bearing?

    • @adetsalo
      @adetsalo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The big bearing of input shaft wasn't very tight to get out of the case. If I remember correctly, it required only little assist of puller maybe not even that. BUT the bearing was very tight on the shaft. I don't have a press and my puller started to bend and wiggle around. I hammered it carefully but it didn't work. Finally I tig welded strenghtened puller legs to the bearing, heated the inner race carefully with tig torch not To damage the surface of the shaft and then it came out easily. 😅 Press would have been perfect.

    Is there a way to inspect the clutch on the bellhousing when installed?

    • @adetsalo
      @adetsalo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the only way to get to inspect the clutch properly is by removing the gearbox.
