- Triumph have been knocking new bikes out at a staggering rate for the last couple of months - in this first ride review I get a go on the fabulous new Speed Twin, a bike that resurrects an iconic Triumph name from the past bringing it bang up to date by marrying the 1200cc engine from the Thruxton with the styling of the classic Bonneville range....is it any good? Stay tuned to find out...

Brilliant review, as always. With a 110+k subs those companies in the motorcycling trade really need to realise the size and the impact you have on the biking world, potentially bigger than many traditional biking media ie magazines. For me, you are the go to person for quality, honest and reliable reviews. All the best.
Thank you!
@@TheMissendenFlyer True. I bought a classic 500 Royal enfield after watching your review, from Bikeden
My favourite bike reviewer. Bought one today. Absolute beast
I think triumph will be shifting quite a few of these!
There's now about a 2 1/2 month wait to get one ...
One of the best looking tryumphs that iv seen for years. If i start saving now I should get one by the time im 120.
@@mickmouse3513 So you must be about 117 right now ? Congratulations ! Give a couple of years and some will appear as used models, maybe it'll be a bit more affordable then .
I'd like the Norton V4 sports bike , but they're £44K , and they've sold all the 250 they're going to make, so this side of winning the lottery and paying someone who's already got one I'm never going to have one of those ! Mind you with my ability I doubt I'd be able to ride it any quicker than a Speed Twin :)
@The Rockall Times . Norton have gone bust a few times. Looks like they're making yet another comeback under new management !
Love that 1200 parallel twin engine, much nicer than the boxer in looks, feel and sound.
I completely agree. I really don't like the cylinders hanging out of the side look of boxer twins!
I took delivery of mine at the start of Feb in Australia and love it, but I have still been eagerly awaiting your review. You summed up the bike really well, and I reckon with more time on it, it could become your favourite retro ! You didn't mention the Corso III tyres, that add a lot to the confident feel, and the standard pipes sound great too, although they don't look so great with the black finish. I hope you get a chance to do a long term review on the bike in due course.
As a Street twin and Thruxton R owner. This is smack bang in the middle, I absolutely adored taking this for a test ride!
Do you think is a good mix of these two or more Thruxton ?
@@MicheleSpiriticchio a great mix of the two, may even include a feel of a speed triple also. Depends on personal preference, but it is a versatile bike in my opinion!
I just ordered, jet black. I have a street twin now is time to change... I hope run for many km... Brakes are feeling the right and i'm very curious for long distances... Thank you !!
Took one of these out this afternoon for a test ride and agree completely with your review and comments. That engine is a peach, fantastic brakes and excellent handling make it a far more enjoyable ride than my T120.
I had a 90 min demo on one of these (same spec as this one) bad boys today & covered 71 miles in beautiful 23 degrees sunshine.😎
What a wonderful machine it is, was surprised how small it was in the flesh against the likes of the Kawasaki z900rs though, however I liked it more because of that fact!
Wonderful dollops of raw torque from 2000rpm - all the way to the 7000k rpm redline... although I did find it quite vibey above the 5000rpm mark!.. But that’s a small complaint, as is the “on the firm side” suspension.
It just felt so light & nimble & ate up all the fast sweeping bends I threw at it with ease...
Classic looks with modern speed/handling & great brakes - fantastic combo!
Well done Triumph 👍🏻
I now want one for myself as a second bike.😁
His review was so convincing he bought one himself.
Impressive machine. Looks like a proper motorbike. Congrats TMF.
Another great review, I’ve watched 9 hours of the Missenden Flyer today and enjoyed every minute.
You lucky man!! ;0)
I was hoping you'd do a review of this bike! I've never owned a Triumph but this one got my attention. It's an absolutely perfect looking motorcycle and hopefully has the sound and some kick to match. I've already been in talks with my local dealer who has one on the way. There's a good chance I may be taking it home :)
Seeing a review from my favorite TH-camr on the machine at the top of my short-list - great way to start the week!
Your reviews are getting better and better. Thanks
Love the content, love the way you share your views on life on two wheels.Triumph bikes are so contemporary and have moved the bar in such a short time,TMF is where I always click for simple, honest, and fun content regardless of subject.Till the next one!
Thank you very much Athanasios!
Just bought a 2018 Thruxton R last weekend. A fantastic deal to clear old stock!
Had to go to the dealership to pick up my plate at the weekend and, as usual pop over to the Triumph section to look at the T 100/120’s but was immediately drawn over to this bike. Absolutely gorgeous.
Great review as usual!
I see a speed twin at the excel last weekend. I was surprised at how small they actually are. I have a street twin and it really is no difference in size. Yes the speed twin has a bigger more powerful engine, but I don't think that's enough for me to make the upgrade. I am perfectly happy with my Street Twin 👌👌👌👌
Just went for a test ride an hour ago at a dealership test ride day. It’s a compact bike with plenty of usable power, though obviously not in the superbike range. Everything about it is as you said. I take back earlier on when I said that the exhaust should sound like the old Meriden Triumphs, the one on this bike does sound good, though it did pop and bang a bit on the over run.
There seemed to be a bit of vibration through the fuel tank, but not unpleasant. I’m comparing it to my Z900RS though, which is super smooth.
If I wanted a parallel twin I’d buy it, but I like my Z900RS too much.
Lovely engine note. Triumph have really got their act together.
Thanks TMF! This is the bike review I have been waiting for this winter! Am looking to add a bike to the garage this spring. Can’t wait till the weather breaks and I can get out on some test rides. This bike is definitely on the short list!
Peace!
Great review and what an utterly gorgeous bike (although I'd personally go for it in the red). I think this has just pushed the new 900 Street Scrambler off the top spot on my Triumph wish list. My only gripe with Triumph is that they're increasingly going down the BMW route of listing a meaningless headline price and then making you pay extra for all the nice bits.
Excellent bike, i want one and totally agree with you on the brake reservoir thing, i don't think they should fit stuff like that on quality bikes.
I may be a lone voice but the brake reservoir doesn't bother me.
Greetings from Australia. I have viewed a couple of your videos already and have just subscribed. It's been many years since I used to ride around my native Surrey but watching you riding the Triumph on English roads brought it all back to me. Looking forward to future vids.
Welcome along Paul!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks for the welcome. Just a curiosity question. Do Triumph no longer make the smaller engine bikes such as the Tiger 90 350 or the Tiger 100 500. The modern bikes all seem to be larger capacity engines ie 1200cc.
I know this review is about a year and a half old but I never tire watching it. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and like your review style. I sold my Z900RS SE earlier this year :( and sorely miss it. It was the rootbeer/candytone. So here I am with no bike and antsy to get another one! I've had my bike license 48 yrs and just can't seem to get it out of my blood. Narrowed my choices down to this Speed Twin (my first Triumph ever) or another Z900RS SE in green this time. Leaning heavy towards this. Btw, I ordered one of your hoodies in black with red trim. Royal Mail says she shipped today!
Be careful with it - they drive the ladies wild!
@@TheMissendenFlyer I hope!
"In fact i've already felt the traction control kick in a little bit" heart thumping
Definitely my favorite of the Triumph retro range. Great review TMF! I spoke with a chap from Triumph USA and his opinion was that this is the “sleeper” of their range.
I reckon it’ll fly off the shelves.....
Hehe wouldn't be a TMF review without a white van :-) Great looking bike but for me if I was in the market for this type of machine I am thinking I would love the Z900RS more. Maybe I need to ride the R9T too, thanks for the inspiration :-)
Great review as always. I'm selling my Street Scrambler (nearly sold I think/hope) and have ordered a grey Speed Twin. I got lucky as my local dealership has a cancelled order coming in in mid May. SOOOOO excited.
Congratulations!
A great classic looking bike. The review was well informed. Well done Mr Flyer.
Thanks for this review, as I became very interested in the Speed Twin as soon as I saw a picture of it. So many good bikes nowadays!
TMF! Thank you so much for export review!! Much appreciated! Will send you vid of my test ride! From Miami!!!😉😎
Aloha TMF - greetings from Hawaii. Been waiting for this one. Excellent review as always! And congratulations on the breaking the 110K subscriber milestone.
Thanks Jim and greetings from Italy!
Nice,we should all have a Triumph in our garage✌️
I agree!
Great review as usual. Thanks! I test rode the r nine T and Z900RS recently and shall be riding this soon. Looking to replace my street triple. Many great choices in the neo-classic segment. For me the inimitable boxer engine note may be the tie breaker although the buttery smoothness and design of the Z900RS are very tempting.
Enjoyed the vid. Could I ask for a comparison to the z900rs?
I am currently between the Speed Twin and the z900rs, so I'd be really interested in your answer as well. Thanks!
The Triumph is better, take my word
Really interesting review, I currently have a 675 Street triple r, which I find really comfortable...having rode it down to Venice last September via, fluella, grimsel, furka, stelvio, gavia mountain passes...with the kriega US bag system...not a bad touring machine....after your observations and likening the riding position to that of a street triple,,,,I can see a little triple to my local dealer coming up very soon...once again a great “real world” review....many thanks
Hi TMF, great video! And since lots of people are asking, have you thought about doing comparison video of all the modern retros? Hearing your thoughts and conclusion should make for an interesting video of different style!
Another idea maybe having collaboration with another TH-camr in the video to bounce ideas off in the comparison. Like collaboration video with Views from the Man's Cave would be epic!
Great review as ever, I've never been a fan of the Thruxton but the Speed Twin looks great and seems just as good fun as the Street Triple, I'd seriously consider it as my next bike.
Got mine in Australia on 13:2:2019 and it is the bike I have waited for - for almost 50 years :) really ;•) started with a Ducati 750 Sport . . .750SS . . . . . . .1200 Thruxton S . . 2019 Speed Twin is : quite simply - sublime , ladies and gentlemen - for me ! ...... oh, Conti's already fitted ;•)
This video is my "Never clicked a video so fast" video. I've been waiting for your review. I agree with you on the point between the Thruxton and the T120. I test rode both and I love the Thruxton's handling and the engine. When i rode the T120, i did enjoy the bike but i felt that the engine was a bit lacking. I get the point of the T120 vs Thruxton. But I always thought it would be a nice custom idea to either get T120 and put Thruxton engine in it, or get Thruxton and replace it's parts with t120 tank and handlebars, but that would probably cost a lot of money. Then Triumph announced this bike and i was like YES, YES!!!. Can't wait for it to reach our shores. Greetings from South Africa
Greetings back!
Nice bike, and if I hadn’t bought my Z900RS last March, this would be my second choice. (Z900RS still first choice though!).
One thing though, what’s with all these parallel twins going for the V-twin sound. It’s become so common, and I think Triumph should have stuck with the snarl of the ‘60s Meriden Triumphs with their 360° cranks. The extra vibration could be tuned out with the balancer shafts I’m sure.
I want a sv1000 so bad, a new one, i do have a zed9
Z900RS is the nicest bike out there, imo.
You'll never sell a 360 cranked bike in the USA....bikes to us MUST sound like 270s
gm16v149
I also bought the RS 900. Better specd and cheaper imo
I wouldn’t swop for this . I thought I might be tempted but I’m not .
It seems like only Benelli have taken the 360° crank sound seriously. Almost all their twin engines have it, and they all sound like the F850GS!
Good short review. Took the words out of my mouth: if I was in the market... If the Speed Twin had been around when I chose my T120. The lighter bike appeals, but I’m left wondering if the quality and spec of the T120 is higher, so too the T120 holding it’s resale value. This bike looks ideal for the odd local blast. Not quite as pretty as the T120 IMHO, not cheap either.
Great looking bike, thanks for the review. Maybe its just my personal taste, but at the Speed Twin's price point I think spoke wheels would be a nice standard feature.
Nice show, thank you. I always found the whole Bonneville range lacking a bit of power so the Speed Twin will give us a bit more of that. I like that bike.
TMF back on board a Trumpet - nice one! Thanks for another great review.
You might find this odd for someone to say, Flyer. I really don't mind seeing you ride dirty machines, and I'll tell you why. It gives potential buyers a perspective on how your motorcycle will look dirty and were it gets itself dirty. Hahaha. I know its odd to say, but for me it works! Love the Speed Twin. Great bike.
This bike is powerful and beautiful at the same time but expensive in India. Someday I will own it.
I think it's a proper upgrade from old bonneville SE model with mag wheels than Street twin. It would be great all round bike specialy community because of the mag wheels. Great choice for tyres and without worrying about flats.. Great review.
👍👍👍👍
Love the bike since the first time I saw it, however i would definitely put a higher handlebar on it so i could change the driving position for more comfortable one.
Great review as ever . A monster engine no doubt and absolutely beautifully designed and finished . But the pricing !!
£10500 for basic
£10800 for a decent paint job
The bike as ridden must be nearer £12K and non adjustable forks and only only preload in rear .
Triumph I’m sorry that’s just not good enough for British riders on British roads . You are gonna price away many sales. When you look at the competition you’ve gotta really want one .
If you had to have Just one bike to buy TMF and 12k to spend , would you buy this one ? Sadly I don’t think I would .
No probably not....
Interesting take Andy. I was thinking it was a steal after watching 44 teeth's review. They're retailing for $12800 US which is pretty close to Sportster pricing, and no doubt this is a better bike (I've owned a couple Sportsters) but I feel like they're somewhat comparable. The idea of trading in my Speed triple towards one of these even entered my mind. Maybe I'm just itching for spring.
I disagree that "that’s just not good enough for British riders on British roads". I've test ridden this Speed Twin, and the non-adjustable front fork is just fine for anyone of average weight - most people don't adjust the fork and rear suspension anyway.
Peter Hatfield
Most people if the suspension is harsh will try and dial it out surely . You don’t pay 11k and not wanna ride it cos it tries to break your wrists . Also most people aren’t average weight . 11.5 st
They are sprung for an “average weight” who may or may not take a pillion or may or may not take luggage . They are designed not to fail .
They are probably oversprung and under damped as most most cheap OE suspension is . The fact that they are non adjustable other than preload is unacceptable imo . If you’ve ever ridden a properly set up bike for you (F & R) there’s a world of difference. My point is in this price range the suspension below average .
I know a really old review, but a great all the same, in fact so good and you series on the Speed Twin, I am after one myself. So you are costing me money! lol
Hope to meet you at the ABR fest 2023
Yes do come and say hello if you see me and Mrs Flyer wandering about.....which you will....
I had a 900cc Bonnie in 2011, loved her to bits but she was underpowered and under suspended. Bought a Tiger 800 and have loved it since, but this is very tempting. Thanks
Completely different animal to the older 900cc bonnies...
lovely review. spirited riding, great reporting. splendid...subscribed!
Thank you sir - and welcome along!
Just yesterday I went to a large regional motorcycle show here in Massachusetts. I went specifically to see the new Triumph line up. Unfortunately, Triumph was the only manufacturer not present. Everyone one else was there including Aprilia, BMW, KTM, Indian, Harley, and all the Japanese makes. I wonder why Triumph didn't bother.
Anyway, thanks to your review I got a taste of the new bike and now I really want to see it in person.
Not had a bike for a few years now,,my last was a Speed Triple 1050😍 enjoying your reviews thank you 😊
Love that 1050 triple!
I REALLY like the looks and features of this bike. Stunning. Love that color too.
I was out riding this weekend and I got stuck behind a white van, thought of you and had a little laugh. Good review!
One of the coolest bikes on the market, sub-zero level for sure ! Spot on Triumph, and nice review, as usual...
Hey TMF you've put me in a dilemma now I test rode the T120 Black last year and was thinking of getting one to keep my Tiger sport company but after your excellent review I'm going have to test the Street Twin now thanks a bunch 😂😂 great review as always 👌
Sorry!
Great review TMF; I'd have loved to have owned one of these had I not recently given up riding for personal reasons. There's no doubt Triumph have the Modern Retro segment very well worked out. Ride safe my friend.
That sir, is the Triumph that takes the Bonneville up a more than a couple of notches. Great design and it seems to be smack bang in the sweet spot for most of us. Nothing to complain about.
Agreed!
Comprehensive review as always. Certainly tweeked my interest. Going to have to book a test ride now when I get back from Thailand. Cheers TMF
Another great, helpful review from TMF. Thank you!
Thanks TMF 👍
I much prefer the look of the Thruxton R
Agreed, this bike looks like most of the other bonnies.
Not saying its ugly thou, it aint!
malacite1 This bike is lighter than the Thruxton, better seating position than the Thruxton?! I think Triumph will make a killing on these...
Have to agree the Thruxton R is a much nicer looking bike than this. Although slightly heavier than the Speed Twin it has the Ohlins adjustable suspension. It is finished better as well. But the Kawasaki Z900RS would be my choice over this. Not a great fan of the BMW R9T. Sorry.
@@cloggsy1971 It's great, you're right. I just prefer the way the Thruxton looks.
And for me, the Thruxton is a better seating position. I have back issues you see.
At last I recognise the roads you were driving on. My girlfriend lives in Hemel (Or Leverstock Green when she's wanting to be posh). Anyway. Once the PCP is up on my BMW S1000R I will be looking at something like this Speed Twin. Keep up the good work.
Very cool!
Looks like a great bike, i was brought home from Hospital with my mam in a sidecar of my dad's Triumph speed twin in 1961 when i was born
Brilliant!
Test rode one of these yesterday; the sport mode was immense! Torque, torque & more torque 😎 It’s a toss up between one of these & the 1200 Scrambler XE (which I also test rode). At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to pound notes 😩
Good problem to have though eh?
Brilliant review, this is the only bike I think I would swap my Griso for.The bike looks and sounds awesome
Good looking bike and the sound what more could you want thanks TMF for the videos
Im really lovin' your vids in HD Mr Flyer, this one was great. Can't believe when you got off for the walk around at how dirty the bikes get in ol' Blighty! No wonder you've got an OCD issue! Strewth, i'm really appreciative now of our dry climate in oz. I wash my bikes once every 10 rides. Blighty, appears it needs a wash every ride. Nice review as usual, I like how the old style bike is more into the modern era now. Triumph really do try to throw all the modern stuff at their bikes. That dash from a distance reminds me of a Tourbillion watch, something like a Richard Mille. Nice. I really like the sound of the engine. Sounded much more bigger than what it was. Cheers groover ;-)
I haven't washed my now redundant ( I passed the test!) learner CB125R since I got it last September ! Mind you if I now get a Speed Twin or Street Twin , I might wash that more regularly !
Another excellent review TMF. Thanks for posting.
Lovely bikes, in fact the whole current triumph range is awesome seriously considered one today but bit the bullet on a second hand cb1300 which is amazing and saved me a few ££££
Triumph have totally nailed this modern retro Bonneville range. Sat on it at the London show, felt a bit low for me. Have one over the Thruxton although they do look lovely. Personally for a tall chap like me the Scrambler 1200 looks ideal.
Looking forward to test riding one.Great review and beautiful bike!👍
Best reviewer on youtube, hands down
Love the review, the wife has approved an upgrade and I'll be ordering. 1 Question - how does it compare to Kawasaki's z900rs, this was top of the list until they announced this. I do recall you saying the kwaka was your new favourite retro. Has the new speed twin changed your mind Missenden Flyer?
Difficult to say - it’s a close call and I need more time on the Kwak!
Pardon my comment, I purchased my silver Speed Twin today in San Diego, Ca. I pick it up tomorrow morning and head to Palomar Mountain for it's maiden voyage.
Congratulations! Enjoy your ride out in beautiful California....
112 000 subscribers! Wow! Congratulations! :-) Nice one, saw it in Copenhagen yesterday. But I'll keep my Rninet pure.
Wet streets and it looks a lot colder than here. We had an official 19°C today. Totally bonters for end february.
The bike looks great exept for the mirrors. I want them a bit more forward and a bit heigher. I forsee parking problems also with them.
Plenty power, same as my bike, so you don't need to switch gear too often. You need a front mud guard extender on this bike, it is very very short.
Gorgeous bike that's right up there with the R9T in the beauty stakes. Personally would prefer a solid coloured tank.
Yes I’m not a huge fan of the paint scheme either....
Lovely. This would be top of my list in UK. Doesn’t seem many places to strap luggage.
Nice vid, really fancy these classic looking bikes. Great gloves by the way!
Cheers!
Triumph are knocking it out of the park at the moment, great review TMF ....
Cheers Henry
And you finally bought this machine for yourself.... Awesome 👍
Can’t help but think an R model with fully adjustable forks and RSDs would be a nice addition to the line up on this thing. Took one for a quick spin to sample the motor in lieu of an available Scrambler 1200 and it’s a seriously nice bit of kit as is.
Awesome review as always! Well done TMF!
Thanks
TMF can I ask if it was your money and after riding both triumph speed twin and BMW RnineT which one would you put your money on to buy??. Another great video again mate 👌
yes, that is the question
Yes. Good question.
Lets throw the Z900RS in the mix too :)
I would go for the Kawie =)
Having test road the thruxton and then bought an R nine T racer - I'd love to know how this one stacks up, too.
re 9:27 . Favourite walk around spot. I'm not surprised. Looks like the entrance to some nice posh house . Accentuate's the bike really well ! Not the place you'd take a "rat" bike !
I recognise that town lol, 2minites from my place. Great review as always keep up the good work. Looking forward to picking up the New Versys at the weekend. Ride Safe
Congratulations on the new bike!
Nice bike, nice review. Looking forward to your test ride of the Scrambler 1200!
Great review, I love your channel. I think this is my next bike
It is a lovely machine...
triumph just came to China this year with 3 models in bonneville range, t100 t120 and bobber. I must say I prefer this over the t120 for the weight
So tempting over the street twin, love this bike, just wish it had a bigger tank.
Great review and gorgeous classic looking motorcycle! Wish I had room in the garage for a 3rd bike!
build a shed ?
Well done Captain, another cracking review. 👍🏍
Great review which confirms everything I hoped for. Like you, this is the Bonnie I've always wanted Triumph to make. I'll probably have to sell two bikes to get one. Now that Triumph have shot themselves in the foot by dropping aftermarket silencers with removable baffles, I won't be giving them my £650 for the V&H EU compatible ones. I'd rather get Remus. Or a de-cat x-pipe. Or both.
Triumph can’t sell them with removable baffles by law with the euro 4, just how it is but unfortunately nothing triumph can do about it. Same with every other brand.
@@gamekeeper687 That makes sense. All my previous Triumphs had/have removable baffles but they're all Euro 3 or earlier. Oh well, easily solved.
Had a go on one the other week. Nice bike but the power delivery is a bit on/off, whereas a Street Triple is super smooth. I know in part that is the difference in engine type, but I’ve ridden other twins with smoother power delivery. Maybe it was just the bike I rode???
They tend to be a bit jerky stock - easily fixed with the throttle spacer for a couple of ££s and or the booster plug (I have both fitted).....
TheMissendenFlyer thanks for that!
ive been waiting for your thoughts on this thing, cheers from Australia!!
Cheers!
I absolutely love this bike, great review chap!
Really an outstanding review. I am not looking for too many specs other than HP, torque and weight. I am more interested in how much fun it is to ride, listen to, accelerate, clutch lightness in traffic and seat comfort. Also would like to know if you would spend your own money on one. I think you did buy one later though.
