Schuberts original version came with lyrics included. In the Liszt version here, the piano is singing the lyrics while accompanying itself which really is quite a difficult thing to do.
This is one of the most difficult pino pieces. The cool thing is that it (listening) seems like a easy piano piece. So the musician that plays it must to be very prepared. I want to learn it in five or six years from now.
It's nice to set goals like these but you really shouldn't specify a certain date. Practice and play it whenever you feel ready. It's important to challenge yourself and learn pieces you love and enjoy. Good luck!
That is a lot for two hands! Thumbs up to Mr. Berman. I wish the final recitative was not so quiet. It sounds like it cuts out before the final two chords.
Original left hand ‘Erlkonig motif’ is in single notes
Liszt’s transcription is in octaves - thanks Liszt
Originally it's a violin piece so...
@@Dorlys42 no, it was originally a scored for voice and piano
Octaves on the left hand are easy.
Juvenal Redivius Part of the difficulty in this piece is that it is completely exhausting, and those “easy” left hand octaves don’t help.
@@ryanmanning2319 yea, the octaves themselves aren't too fast, nor difficult, it's just that they're very exhausting
My right arm hurts just looking at the consistently massive effort required to play so many forté tremolo octaves and chords.
Jhamaal Sykes actually pianissimo is even harder
@@crobatchoppurple8728 agree
just flop wrist
I do agree
Guys playing soft is not always harder and I believe this is one of the cases.
somewhere in my head the lyrics are playing
Me too i'm so scared because of the devil and the son😖
i’ve listened to the schubert one so much i still hear “wer reitet so spät...“

Left hand, you may say your last words
Righty aswell 😭
Wonderful! It's true that just reading the score brings on hand cramps.

You can do it. Keep practicing !
should have known when you see liszt

This is like intermediate level
@@misterling645 it's advanced
It didnt really sink in just how hard this piece is until i tried just the opening right hand (which i foolishly thought looked really simple)
I saw Lazar Berman play this in recital at Severance Hall in 1978. Simply epic playing of a most difficult score !

The melody is brought out so well!
Honestly the hardest part for me is always the erlkonig's parts. The jumps are absolutely enormous, and the voicing is really hard to get right
Yes! I believe this recording doesnt really catch the feeling of the Erlkönig! Its supposed to be convincing but also scary at the same time yk
The performance of the Liszt-Schubert transcription that sounds the most like the song it's meant to be!
As if the pianists accompaniment wasn’t already difficult enough
Someone know where I can find this sheet? It's hard to find only for piano.

I think we'd call this an arrangement rather than a "mere" transcription
even more like a paraphrase
This sent my skin creeping across the floor and I scram like mad

Holllly molllyyy I thought that piece was easy but after this...I like it
The Erlkonig's section is oddly simple and seductive when compared to the father and son's futile gallop. Remarkable performance.
He rily studied the piece seeing that he added the original schubert melody in the end which wasn on Liszt's version

Ja, Liszt ist nie so erregend wie Schubert
