Small but perfectly formed? A tour of the Peugeot e-208 Allure Premium

  • It’s no surprise the Peugeot 208 is so popular in Europe with its tiny roads, towns and car parks. The electric version takes the winning formula and makes it silent, efficient, and cheap to run. I’d not tested it yet so when Onto offered me one to try (since it’s their car of the month), I jumped at it. Here are my first impressions.

    Thank you for a great video Andrew. @10:38mins you say you cannot think why you would watt to ever turn parking sensors off. If you drive down some tight country lanes, they automatically keep coming on and sometimes the camera on some models will automatically turn on removing your navigation guidance or whatever was being displayed on the infotainment system. I love the way that you give the useful stats in detail as you go through the description. Much enjoyed and not as long or irritating like many of the US versions I endured looking into the Polestar and Tesla Y. Shall subscribe to see more!

    Interesting to see the E-208, I have the automatic petrol version of this car although a little older (2020 allure)
    The gear selector is different but the rest of the interior looks the same to me. You get used to the steering wheel shape, and the cruise control/speed limiter is kind of awkward but after a while becomes quite intuitive.
    I wouldn't mind having the e-208 as a direct replacement for my ICE one but I wish Peugeot would build something designed as an EV from the start, the electric models are really just ICE transplants.

    Found any way to limit the charge to a set percentage? I had a corsa-e from onto for a while and the only option I found was to charge to full every time (unless you sit there and unplug) - not an issue on rapids but not super for the battery if I’m topping up to 100% at home every night.
    The corsa was an alright car (if you forget the price) but watch out for those alloys - super easy to ding

    Had one (GT) for nine months now (company lease). I love it - fast, smooth, rides and handles superbly. Range is 180 miles max really - I’m getting 4.0 KWHr per mile currently and the useable battery is 45 KWhr. Unlikely to get more than that unless you hypermile it. Over winter that dropped to 3.2 so range dropped to 150 ish.
    Small wheel doesn’t bother me at all and cabin is really nice. Space wise it’s quite small in the back and boot not massive but as a second car it’s great. Highly recommended.

    Nice! You've covered a lot after just one day... sums it up well. I've had mine for 2.5 years and not noticed any degradation in range, handles my motorway journeys well, and the interior still feels special. Worst thing is the Peugeot app (I mostly rely on Tronity) and the lack of % - the GOM seems better on more recent models, but mine is a 2020 build so the GOM can go a bit bananas at times.

    • @nickman011
      @nickman011 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I also have the 2020 version I love it did a 2000km round trip to the south of France last summer. sadly My GOM is also strange I charge it mostly with a household plug as I don't drive. that much. The strangest thing is after charging for example to 90% my GOM reads that I have almost 400km of range totally impossible. But if I let it sit for 15 min then the GOM estimates are much more realistic to around 280km's. I received an notification inside the Peugeot app telling me it has to go in for a recall (Software update of the drivetrain with a code MF9) Peugeot told me that this wil fix the inaccurate GOM. You can view it in the Peugeot app in the top right then tap my recalls.

    Have commented on Twitter. My wife has the identical model. Needed a car with rear doors as she takes friends around. Range was widely inaccurate in the winter, better in the summer. The lack of any manual is dreadful. We have spent hours on TH-cam learning how to use the controls. She never uses cruise control because the stick is out of view so unless you know where controls are by touch it is hopeless. The lane control can be quite aggressive and there are no clear instructions how to turn it off & the Peugeot dealer in Eastbourne couldn’t advise if it could be set to ‘off’ rather than having to switch off each journey. As you say it drives very nicely around country lanes but the sporty wheels do not cope with potholes in East Sussex compared to my Niro with 17” wheels. Getting 4m/kWh means it only needs charging once a week in the summer and on Octopus Go it is costing about 2.4p/mile. I will watch your videos with interest. Try to get the Niro EV next time and my wife and I can then compare & contrast!

    I had one as a courtesy car earlier this week, and I didn't really like it. The interior seemed cramped and cluttered, and I had trouble getting the seat in a position where I could see the driver's screen. OVER the steering wheel (which is tiny)? Driving it was like pootling around in a Fiesta compared to the big smile that came over my face the minute I set off in my test drive for my MG4.
    I could see the interior was a higher spec than the MG4, and the radio was certainly better, but for whatever reason I didn't like it. The MG4 has a sort of uncluttered spartan simplicity to it that's really relaxing. I guess there are a lot of features I didn't investigate in my short time driving the car, and you do get used to a car, but the "meh" response I had to this compared to the "I'm in love!" response I had to the MG4 was unexpected. (These are the only two EVs I've ever been in.)
    The dashboard is a truimph of 3D graphics over actual information. I was really, really happy to take it back to the dealer and retrieve my MG4 from its appointment with the software updater.

    This is the car we're looking at to replace our Toyota Yaris (our second car). Unfortunately, we need two cars due to where we live, our work schedules, kids' activities etc. but this would be a good fit. Our other car is a BEV with good range ... so ideally the second car would have a decent range so that it does not need to be charged each day allowing us to rotate cars in our single charging spot. It is why a cheaper secondhand older EV often doesn't work, as the range is at the level that (how we drive) we'd have to charge it almost every day.
    Anyway ... cheers for the review. Looking forward to more videos.

    • @ISuperTed
      @ISuperTed 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We have one as our second car and would highly recommend it - lovely car to drive/own. It’s got reasonable space but quite cramped in the back though fine for 4 people. Boot again not the biggest but okay. Range wise realistically my version does about 180 miles in the summer and 150 in the winter, though I know the latest version does a bit more.
      It shows about 205 miles when fully charged but best efficiency has been 4.0 KWhr and with a usable battery of 45 KWHr that gives 180 miles. Overall though it’s a great small car especially in GT trim. Expensive new but depreciation is quite high now so a one year old is a pretty good buy in my opinion.

    Hi - have just bought one (had it a week) - do you know of or found a work around for the in cars inability to set a charging limit to 80% - it appears just guess work via the home 7kW charger which only allows you to set a time range when charging occurs, but no way of telling it to turn off when it reaches the Holy grail level of 80% - just a niggle that's all. The Peugeot app is equally appalling. Car seems fun to dive though.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Congrats! I couldn't find a solution to the lack of a charge limit although I've read that the battery has a large upper buffer, so even if you charge to 100%, it's actually just charging to 80% of the total capacity anyway. So if Peugeot aren't too worried about it, I suppose we shouldn't be either!

I now pay £120 a month more for a lesser car (they have just made me swap my GT for a lower model with no price reduction). They also put car prices up by £50 and reduced mileage by 250mikes a month, which will cost you £70 to add on…..

    Had one for just over 3 years now - just love it. Drives great (had a Fiesta ST prior to this), feels nippy, quality is excellent and it's been hugely reliable. My only criticisms of it would be the massive difference in Summer/Winter efficiency (I know it affects all EV's but it seems particularly bad in mine), and the Peugeot App for the car, that has been awful since day one. Great first EV.

    A smartphone isn't always better for navigation.
    I prefer the on-board navigation on my Model Y, it also automatically includes chargers and adapts to real world circumstances.
    The possibility to look at possible chargers along the way and how occupied they are is great if you go on a road trip or on vacation over 500 miles away.
    I really wouldn't want to use third party apps or have to be busy with calculating percentages and looking up charge spots when the car does it on it's own.
    It should soon begin calculating not only the available chargers but also the cars on their way to a charger, insuring an optimal use of all the chargers and a minimum of charging time for all who use the Tesla chargers.

      Well, the Model 3 is 60cm/2feet longer and still has no boot while this does. That's why people would rather spend their money on this than the Model 3. Not aimed at the same crowd. This is for people who want a simple, easy to understand, practical commuter car. The M3 doesn't fit that bill.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Not everyone wants a Tesla though. Many people want small cars. For most of the driving I have to do, I'd honestly rather drive this than a Model 3.

    Forget long journeys in it. The cost of charging on the pubic network is high. The car is not the most efficient. Only around 150 to 180 miles if your lucky, on a charge. Around two and a half hours of driving . It's a town car. Only saving grace is if you go to France, the French will have more sympathy for you, than if you break down or run out of charge in an Audi.
