      'Atta girl! I'm in your age group and seem to blow Hubby's mind with the things I do to fix, build, assemble, repair, tune-up, whatever, our garden equipment each Spring. -- It does still escape me, however, why we feel the need to explain that we're just ordinary women - not scary bears - who simply know how to do this type of stuff. Why is that?

    EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much for the reminder to pick up the better clamp. I ran out of them and just used the thin ring clamps I had lying around. I always cut myself, too, on those sharp ends that grow longer after they're screwed on. I once tried to snip one back and round it out -- even filed it -- but it's still in the way, so then I had to hassle around with thick outdoor tape to "pad" it. It looked ridiculous. I'm just going to mosey on over to Amazon (where else?) and buy the right one (or two). I'm a petite 68 year-old Yiayia (Greek Grandma) and still love to do all of these repairs and tinkering with gardening power equipment I built and maintain myself. I just rebuilt our old beloved 2002 John Deere LT150 lawn tractor after a head-on collision with a deck post last summer. As I always taught my now 4 grown sons, my philosophy is that, if you have the utter nerve, you can accomplish positively anything. I've always had that utter nerve (unmitigated gall?), and so I learned. Hubby just smiles and shakes his head. He's jealous... LOL!

    I had a hell of a time getting the brass piece down into the hose all the way. I ended up getting some coconut oil that I had in the house and coating the brass piece and then also put some down inside the hose as deep as I thought the brass piece was going to go and voila! The lubricant makes all the difference!

  • @316woodworks9
    @316woodworks9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just watched this and it worked. Here is my experience to help others. I got a male end by mistake. I kept it for the other end. I went back and got the female end. It's metal with stainless steel screws and is brass and the clamp is like aluminum. I used a sharp utility knife and just eyed the cut. I hacked a couple of uneven parts. I do have a PVC cutter but didn't want to dig it out. The product I bought at Ace Hardware said it would fit both size hoses. I think it's 5/ and 3/4. I used the correct size screw driver, which seems important to do, and unscrewed the sleeve. Using a cordless drill is fine for taking the screws out and putting them back in but don't use the drill with a Phillips but to do the final tightening. Use that big fat screwdriver and do the final cranking by hand. You can easily slip the screwdriver when tightening and hurt yourself. You can also strup the screws if they are cheap. As I tightened it, I eyed the gap on both sides. Making sure to alternate a little turning of each screw back and forth. Always making sure the gap of the clamps stay parallel. This is what would cause a leak along with a really bad cutting of the hose and also not lining the sleeve up in the right spot. I personally left a little gap below the insert and the sleeve but wanted to mention this little detail. I believe that's correct but tell me if I'm wrong. The gap was about 1/8 inch. In the end, no leak. One more tip, I did put the whole setup against my deck rail as I tightened the final turns. This keeps you from putting the screw driver through your hand. Lol. As for tightening, I did as much as I could just barely before the point when the screws felt like they would slip or strip. Take your time and like I said, turn one screw a little and then the other and back and forth. I think it cost about 14 bucks for all metal, which is a little high but we get a discount at Ace. If you need to do both sides, in my case, it may be best to buy a new hose.. mine is pretty strong and lives with pressure a lot and never ruptured so I wanted to salvage it. Some may want to look at the chemicals in the metal if using for drinking water. If you've been vaxed, don't waist your time though. I really hope this helps someone!

    Thank you for this great video. I have one of those stupid lightweight flat hoses that I do not care for that much cause they crimp too much and its annoying..... but it really is too new of a hose to replace and the metal end fell off. I cut the end as you instructed and the flat hose ending was still a little too small to fit over the brass clamp male end, so I nipped it a little on one side so I could shove the hose over it as far as I could. Then I used duct tape to secure the end of the hose around the male brass end and screwed the clamp on and voila, its not leaking and works great so far. I am using my sprinkler with it right now.

    I replaced one of these about a year ago and today it popped off. It took some effort to get the fitting back into the hose (thanks to the people who suggested hot water and petroleum jelly). Then my issue was that the clamp will not fit over the hose next to the female fitting. It's just not big enough. I ended up screwing it down on the hose below the fitting about 1 1/2-2". It's not leaking so I hope the fix lasts. I wonder why I had this issue and others don't comment on it.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually don't think that you can use it on one of those hoses. I know a lot of people like those because they are light and easy to move around, but I don't think that they are repairable. I could be wrong, but I know that this repair kit is not for them.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it does work the same way if you are replacing the female end. The most common garden hose size is 5/8. It is possible to have a commercial hose with a 3/4 inch end. So these ends that I use should work for your hose assuming it's not one of those nylon fabric ultra lights. 👍 So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Help. I bought this same product but it’s too big to get my garden hose around. How do I measure garden hose width? From outside to outside? Or, the width of the actual opening?

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This should fit all standard garden hoses. You would measure the I.D. or inside diameter of the hose. The inexpensive hoses are hard to get on and it may help to put the last two inches of the hose in some hot water for a minute to soften it up and allow it to stretch a little.

    I'm havinga problem after installing the new brass fitting inside the old hose the hose end does not seem squared up enough and so it leaks. I cannot seem to figure out how to fix that. • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From your description it sounds like you need to get the hose cut off more square. If that can't be done with a utility knife and you don't have a pipe cutter like I used, then I would find someone that you know that has one and get it cut off clean.

      If you have a hose that is having trouble getting onto the replacement end, then you need to warm it up. Get a bowl of hot water and put just the last 2 inches in it. Let it warm up for a minute, that should help you out.

      @Daisy Ortiz sorry for the late reply. Most hoses are 5/8" and I am not sure I have seen any smaller. But there may be some "as seen on TV" type hoses that are. Commercial grade hoses are normally 3/4". These fitting work on both. I have links in the video description for them, but here is the male end like for you. www.amazon.com/Gilmour-Zinc-Male-Coupling-01MZ/dp/B0008JGSCM?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0008JGSCM&pd_rd_r=8603f14d-7e62-11e8-9d6e-6d9b471821ce&pd_rd_w=thQpV&pd_rd_wg=IEnYU&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3914568618330124508&pf_rd_r=1PBFPXRRW5G3SC6X8Z2J&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&refRID=1PBFPXRRW5G3SC6X8Z2J&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=80c778d1f61370f8ff774218b9b23e1d&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl

    Great video. I can’t find any links or info on the products, though.

    Thanks for the video. Home Depot one is about half price. Even the same brand in ace hardware is much cheaper.

      The one at Home Depot is not solid brass. Read the reviews on that one.
