  • I 3D printed an RC rocket car and in this video we're going to find all of the weaknesses. I used a combination of Traxxas Electronics, mini servos, a Noble NB4 Radio, Estes Rocket Motors and many more parts to make this thing.

    I watched a video once where someone was trying to use multiple engines for something, and had issues with the consistency of the igniters. In the end, they ended up making their own igniters from scratch. This made them all exactly the same, and worked much better.

    First video of yours I've seen - I appreciate that you don't shy away from the details of how this build came together! Shame it didn't get to run, but I respect the decision to prioritize safety above all else. Best of luck with the revisions!

    It’s takes a lot of skill and the vehicle to be very stable and made very well to handle and maintain those speeds. At those speeds everything is vibrating and any small interaction with anything will have a great effect on your car.

    The old school way of doing suspension is an aluminum or fiberglass torsion system. Today you've got Aluminum, G10, and Carbon Fiber just 1 click away. I'd probably try to come up with a torsion suspension based on CF, because G10 might break if there is an unexpected impact. Then again, maybe Kevlar is the better choice because of resilience?

      @EngineeringAfterHours  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The fact that you mention resilience let's me know you know your stuff. These are great ideas and I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've discussed resilience with someone that actually knows what it is.
      I want downforce in a version of a speed runner.

    I love the idea of the rocket car. Rossa's rule about the rocket motors being inline is kind of strange. It seems like they should be much more worried about the location of the center of gravity because a vertical inline configuration isn't any more stable, and possibly less if the car rolls from a bump.
    I'd love to see a reverse thruster for a brake 😁

    • @EngineeringAfterHours
      @EngineeringAfterHours  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      100% agree that CoG relative to thrust vector should be the concern.
      I want to try and beat your speed of a 3D printed soeedrunner soon...maybe I'll throw a reverse thruster on that :)

    Looking into multi stage rocket motors. There are some that will not fire the ejection charge out the top of the motor thus not launch themselves out of your test bed.
    However a more viable option is to engineer a small escape route from the top of the rocket motor to the exterior of the vehicle. You will need one for each motor. But a small 1/4 inch tube mounted just on top of or near the top of the rocket motor and routed to exit the vehicle near the top will result in a path for exhaust gasses. This way they do not build up pressure and jettison the rocket motor. My guess would be routing them to exit out the top of the car would be they might add a small amount of down thrust to the top of the car and aid in traction or keeping the front down.

    • @EngineeringAfterHours
      @EngineeringAfterHours  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The estes motors I'm using actually are booster stage motors so they don't have an ejection charge. I think it's because they weren't plugged.
      The venting is a good idea. This system is actually vented but for whatever reason I forgot to add the pass through in the adapters that allowed me to swap motor sizes.

    Also you should try and make your own rocket solid rocket fuel and and the motor casing on your own if you know what you are doing u can make just one very good and prolly kinda big rocket engine. Man I get pumped watching this thanks!!!

    Use quick match fuse to ignite all your motors at the same time, from a single igniter

    • @EngineeringAfterHours
      @EngineeringAfterHours  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely need foams for higher speeds. I'm going to try and make the narrow chassis work for low drag. We will see if it pays off.

    might want to check into nylon coated fishing leader wire, quite durable and low friction ( unless the rocket exhaust gets stuck at a point for the time required to melt it).....

    I have built similar cars. Rocket only is fine however suggest all motors in a vertical plane incase one or more doesn't light. I have seen r cars with G motors and it is important to have a teather steel cable laying flat in the road trailing the car so when the car at high speed hits a small imperfection in the road and decides to go airborne it is contained

    need a reverse or stopping device?? How about a deflector plate... passenger jets use a thrust diverter to reverse the thrust on the motors from rear to front... jet skis and boats also use the same device. It could be used for emergency reasons while thrust is being produced. Once the thrust is no longer available and its all inertia you are back to frictional brakes or snag hooks.

    • @EngineeringAfterHours

    ROSSA is living in the past they also only allow one brand of speed traps. It's just stupid... Build what you want to build and check speeds off GPS.
    Most guys are not running suspension on the cars. Shocks have maybe 2mm travel due to travel limiters. Tires will be a big problem. Even with foams the diameter is an issue with existing 100-103 mm tires. You may want to design around the tires needed to safely go that fast.
