I’ve been playing since Early access started a week or so ago … I’m about 20 hours in … I’m having a blast … the game has good bones .. kind of a breath of fresh air in mmo genre too
Picked up early access this weekend and have been having a blast. The classes feel very EQish which is exactly what I was hoping for. The atmospheric lighting and audio is already fantastic but will admit I'm looking forward to an animations/texture update in the future.
If you were playing EQ around the time of WoW launch, it was the anti-Everquest, not the successor. I very much feel Pantheon IS the spiritual successor to EQ
I hope that this game will pan out. They have putting together this game since 2013. Love the EQ vibe but being that is has already been done. I would really love to see the ability of less down time (mana/hp). Solo events as well as group events. The ability to stand out from the rest is what I hope they are aiming for. I would gladly pay a premium for this. Also the main Dev was the original EQ dev before he died.
After 10 years the game looks like it's been scratched and restarted. The graphics looked great in this game 5 years ago now they're pretty basic. I'm not sure if the point is to look like EQ 1999 but it's 2024 now and some updated graphics would be nice after a decade+ on this game.
As a former mana battery aka Bard I would agree. EQ added abilities and raid dynamics over time that expanded class roles but not by much. That and a little more solo options when you log into dead-ish zones would be enticing. I'm curious about UI customizing and macros that were such a big part of efficiency for me. I'm willing to give this a try when I can spare the time to do groups for leveling. The grind never bothered me much when I had good guild mates to do it with.
I don’t regret the purchase. I was super on the fence, and far from impressed by the myriad of content out there on Pantheon. Against my better judgement; I broke down and pledged (very late) for the Buddy Key (that I still don’t have). There’s a nice foundation here for any EQ or MMO enthusiast, though. I wouldn’t be in a huge hurry to jump in - there is still a long way to go in terms of incoming updates and character/server wipes. And thanks for the coverage. Hope you are enjoying your time.
Agreed! Great foundation but there's still a lot of testing, and breaking, to do. That said, Pantheon and servers seems very stable. Iwas on the fence for a few years too, but am glad I bought early access this weekend.
I’ve been having a ton of fun with the game. I played the original eq at launch and quit around 2004. This game brings back a lot of memories and is definitely an improvement . I look forward to leveling up and seeing more of the game world
There will be a map some day, with some sort of fog of war and some POIs on it. No mini map, no GPS, no dot showing you on it. With quests and drops that will add detail to it.
Yes you lose XP on death and have to corpse run after level 4. You maintain your equipped gear on death, but you have to run to get your bags and gold. It feels mostly like EQ1, with a better questing system.

There's no map and literally almost no instruction manual ( outside simple turtorials). This causes people to actively talk to other players and ask questions. Im having a blast 😊

I paid the 40 bucks last week and have not regretted it. I love it. I have an 8 cleric, a 7 cleric, a 6 chanter, a 6 paladin and a few others. If you could 2 box it, I would pay another 40 bucks.
Yeah honestly they should stop listening to the the special people in the community that wanted to be a minimum experience. There's lots of ways to have something that's challenging and yet you don't have Mana issues and you don't have a aggro issues and you don't have a grind
You do get an ability to restore 20% mana instantly every 90 seconds. You might already have it (comes automatically somewhere around level 5 i think, without buying it). Cleric damage is very reliant on your weapon, since non undead nukes are not that great... but you can outlast mobs usually, haha. My cleric can solo fine, but it's slow compared to other classes. If you want a class with lightning fast soloing, try wizard. But you need to learn the focus mechanic or you will kill yourself with your own nukes.
@@Pyrioldthis game was not designed for soloing. If you want to “solo” go play wow. This game is for group content. Sure, you can solo, but it’s a lot harder to solo.

I don't understand why not just put levels on the enemies, instead they have this ambiguous difficulty, and "con" the mob to determine if it is okay to attack, challenging, or deathly. Also I will say I value gameplay over graphics 100% of the time, but there is a difference between talking about a game made over 25 years ago and its graphics, and then a game made today in 2025 with arguably same or worse graphics - that's not a callback, that's just a failing. There is a big difference between a "retro feel" and just being very dated and bland. Sadly this game just looks and feels very dated and bland. I love the idea of this. However, there are a number of other really good quality MMOs that you could play instead of this, for more old school feel, tab targeting or group play and immersiveness.
I tried it, and man I just couldn’t get past the horrible UI and overall bleak and unpolished gameplay. I had high hopes and wanted to like it. Just because they want to have a more hardcore game doesn’t mean it needs to be so dated and empty.
OG Everquest still pumping out content…. Why play a rework when you could just play EQ? No one has yet to explain to me what this brings to the table that I cant get in EQ.
The game is fun, tons of bugs though, but that's expected. But the graphics .... 5 years ago the graphics looked great in this game. Now they're just ehhh. at best.
Just play everquest for free, this game is an incomplete shameless clone - down to every class and spell and its a copy/paste. This may have 'slightly' better graphics but has only a fraction of the content and the audacity to charge £40 for this is insane. Save your money and go play the real thing, this is Everquest from Temu
Brad failed with a much a larger budget in a time where there was a much bigger audience. The skeleton left behind by has passing has not shown anything to indicate they can release a game on par or better then his failure vanguard. The fact that to do even as much as they have they had to gut the graphics is a good indication of how this will end.
I think there might be more to the story based on input from others. There has been some mention of Unity changing the licensing which halted progress and the current state of the game is based on a few years of work and the ten or more we have been following it. I hope they finish it up and I am having fun in it now but look forward to more systems and updates to follow.
@@petersonfamily6223 Realistically speaking there is nothing currently here that sets it apart from games that already exist. There is no one on the team who has the experience to make a person believe it will somehow magically become more then it is right now. There is no budget available that would lead a person to believe any of that is going to change either. The biggest thing this game has going for it is all the things it does not have and the baseless hope it will have it in the future. Again see people crediting Brad for EQ in the comments will ignoring the 30 million dollar flop that was Vanguard.
Game has been in development for like 15 years and it's just now an early access, and most of the systems aren't complete? Don't expect this game to ever get fucking finished
This is actually about 2 years of work on this. Had some license issues I believe and had to scrap the pysical work (that is my understanding anyway). I am having a grand old time regardless, even if there are times I wanna rage quit lol
First, there def are. You’re just not high enough to go to another zone. Second, it’s not a solo game. Ask in ooc “lfg”. I play both a healer and a chanter and I don’t have any trouble finding groups
There's plenty of spots to solo in the open world. I'm almost level 20 and have soloed more than I've grouped. The group content is where the fun is though!
I just posted this the other day on my feelings about the game....I wish I could get my supporter money back from this game. I dont mind that you have to group, that is is catered to old school MMO players, or that there isn't much content. None of those things bother me in the least bit. The issue is, their vision of this game, and what they put out, are completely different. Its more than obvious that their funding was running low, people were getting impatient, and they simply had to put it out or disband the project. They even tried to put out an alternative to the game with a dungeon crawler mode, but people were furious. The graphics were planned to be MUCH better than they are, but then they said they wanted to go another direction with an overhaul....which is code for "its going to take too much time and money to do it the way we planned." Even something as basic as the UI is just pathetic. What did we end up with? This piece of garbage. I may get alot of grief for posting this, but this game is going to end up like all the other failed MMOs. It will be a small hardcore player base barely keeping it alive until they sell it or close the doors.
You are correct about the graphics situation, it was exactly like that. So your solution would be to... instead kill the game? There really was no other option. I am glad they did as they did, the graphics have never been that important for me. When you talk about "vision" for the game you obviously really mean graphics. Because everything else, they kept and expanded upon. Sure, a lot of systems need flashing out, but the core is there and its really fun... for me and people like me. TLDR: i think i understand where you are coming from. But please do understand that superficial things like graphics are not all that important for a lot of people. People like me have been without a game home for a long time and this is finally delivering. I am having the time of my life, and i know lots of other people who feel the same.
@@Pyriold The game was planned to be much more than it is in every way, not just the graphics. Lets be honest. They just said "good enough" with everything they did because they had no other choice. Im happy you and many others are having fun. I think that is awesome. There will always be a small handful of people who will love the game no matter how bad it is. I was even one of the few players left at the end of Asherons Call 2.
Ok, I've been watching people talk about this game and review it and I just have to say something. Is there any chance people can fuck off with the retro excuse? I mean, at least the game has an excuse (in theory) in that Unity borked them a few years ago so they had to suddenly scramble and basically remake the game from scratch (arguably their own damn fault for taking too long in the first place). When EQ came out back in its day, it was amazing graphically. Any company that makes a game nowadays and "tries to replicate retro graphics" is just bullshitting you. They're cutting corners, saving money, and pushing profits. They don't love you, they don't love their game, and with all the time wasters in this game, they clearly have in mind adding systems later where you'll pay for convenience, mounts, maps, a subscription, etc. They will come. How do I know this? This is the game we've gotten after a decade, a fucking decade, of working on it, and they finally put it up on Steam as an EA game (the only way they can justify it's absolutely garbage state of development) at a whopping $40. Compare that to, say, Path of Exile 2. PoE 2 also just came out onto the scene in EA, at $30. So right off the bat, 25% cheaper. It's glorious. It's super hard, super fun, and only has half its content in. It's a game you know will actually get finished over the next year. Pantheon, on the other hand, has the audacity to say it will get out of EA in 2 years... buuuuuut maybe not. Just like they said they're not going to charge a subscription... buuuuut maybe they will. They're certainly not going to be P2W!! ... BUUUUUUT how many developers have said that and not considered a thousand different things "not" P2W? They're scamming you all. For $40, you should have a complete game. For $40, you should have more than 4 hair styles. For $40, you should have promises of no subscriptions, not maybes. And that's it. That's all I wanted to say. Buyer beware.
Why would you want to play a game "like" Everquest when there are so many flavors of Everquest as it is with all the emulators? My favorite is EQ "The Heroes Journey".
Because EQ, while really being a fine game (the classic one, not the modern abomination), is stuck in its ways and we want something new, expanding on the formula without destroying it.
Absolutely this, Born and Raised on everquest, but I'm not going to go back and play that fucking game anymore....2 old set in its ways. Not looking for a myriad of private servers were they adjust a couple of rules,
@@Kaosfury420 LOL... I thought the same thing... I'm too old for this. BUT, then I tried "The Heroes Journey" and I'm back, baby! It's the most populated EMU server or good reasons. Perhaps the biggest reason is that you create a character which has 3 classes rolled into 1 toon! No boxing, no multiple logins... your character can play 3 classes all at once, whatever you want it to be. (I'm currently playing a Ranger-Enchanter-Magician character. So I'm a pet class, a decent tankish and crowd controller all-in-one. It's a blast! I can solo any dungeon and I'm exploring the world like I never could before.
I have been following this game since it was just an idea. This game will never be EverQuest or close to it. A complete disappointment from what it was originally advertised to be.
it is not the NEW everquest, it is actually the OLD everquest, Pantheon is 90% like original EQ, totally uninspired, basically EQ 1.1, just surfing on nostalgia. I am playing a ranger and all the mechanics are the SAME, like for example tracking, the animations are the same, etc... Devs should be embarrassed.
@@FirstNameLastName-okayyoutube it is 10 years. The game was going very well before Brad passed away, the scraped a lot of things and redid the game again.

Just because they want to have a more hardcore game doesn’t mean it needs to be so dated and empty.
this game is damn hard and takes 4 ever to lvl anything omg omg
The graphics are terrible, just say it and dont spend 5 mins trying to excuse it.
but can you jump?
Not only can you jump, there is climbing.
I honestly would have preferred everquest type graphics than what we have now. It looks bad and terribly generic.
OG Everquest still pumping out content…. Why play a rework when you could just play EQ?
No one has yet to explain to me what this brings to the table that I cant get in EQ.
Pantheon Alpha Graphics better than EverQuest Graphics better than Pantheon EA Graphics.
no world pvp no play
The game is fun, tons of bugs though, but that's expected. But the graphics .... 5 years ago the graphics looked great in this game. Now they're just ehhh. at best.
Maybe...minus 12,524,265,325.4 years of content.
There isn’t enough mobs to solo in open world
First, there def are.
@@Pyriold You do realize that your TLDR is about as long as your original post?
AOC is 120 dollars dude
@@Pygmalion1.6 Thanks man, shall I list off other games that cost money, or did you have a point?
@@cyrusmagnus did you play it?
@@Pygmalion1.6 Why?
@@cyrusmagnus It means no.
Ok I see.
These graphics are worse than Everquest. Generic
Huh?!
Graphics are pretty and graphics doesn’t have to be crazy. Game play makes a world
Why would you want to play a game "like" Everquest when there are so many flavors of Everquest as it is with all the emulators?
10 Years and the devs delieverd a piece of trash
Not really 10 years of work to be fair. People left. people died. Its a quality of life phase now and graphics are surprisingly easy to get tweaked.
@@FirstNameLastName-okayyoutube it is 10 years. The game was going very well before Brad passed away, the scraped a lot of things and redid the game again.
@@ryuno2097 Not true. The game was just a demo and not going well at all. And Brad would not have magicked the amount of resources needed to continue with these high res graphics, it would just have died.
@@ryuno2097 your misinformed.
First it’s not a piece of trash. It’s just not for you. Second, it has not been 10 years. It’s been 2. Come leave a comment when you actually know what you’re talking about. 🤦🏻♂️
This game is dead on arrival. I've been watching development for 12 years. This ain't it.
Can confirm. I'm not even sure this will go anywhere, even with another 2 years.
You can stay in class pissed off looking out the window, watching everyone else at recess have fun. Nobody cares
Im harsh but not yet into thinking it is dead. Really i got pisses i had hard time figuring out starting quest.. and thats clearly me being dumb. The fact they did this much with so many stops and starts is interesting.
Not your cup of tea does not mean dead. Lots of people are having a great time. Including me. And the numbers are still rising steadily.
@@Pyriold true DOZENS of people are having fun with in, I'd say even HUNDREDS of them.
Garbage EQ clone. No originlity .
Looks more like a EQ2 knockoff to me imo, it'll be interesting if it can create and sustain a large player base. If it does I may try it at some point but if I want to play everquest I'll play EverQuest. p1999, and project quarm are the answers to your yearning for a nostalgic gameplay experience
