This is exactly what I’ve been looking for from a lesson on slide guitar…I’m just now beginning to learn this style of blues playing and would love to continue to see these type of lessons to progress my slide skills🎸❤
Thank you so much for this incredible cohesive and simple lesson. I have always wanted to be able to play in this style and you gave me a great place to start!
This was a fantastic lesson. I’m just starting on my slide and resonator journey, I’m mostly used to playing classic rock power chords. I just bought a Gretsch Honey Dipper and it feels totally foreign to me in a good way. I’m looking forward to watching more of your lessons
Thank you very much. I’m suffering thumb problem and I can’t use pick for some month : why not trying play with bottleneck ? Damned it’s hard, first time bottleneck first Time finger picking, first Time open tuning. But your video with your explaination help me a lot. After two weeks I am still on the basic groove part. It’s hard but I love it :):) Thank you for that.
I would normally always tune to open G, but I really think there is something magic about blues in open E. I think it's my preferred slide tuning now, I love not having to tune the high e string down, always feels so janky in open G
Fantastic lesson. Love that open E sound too. Do you have any names I could punch in on Spotify and listen to old blues players who favoured this particular tuning? Thanks for all you’re doing for the blues. I really appreciate you.
Thanks, Ol Grey Bear! Always good to see you in the comments. Off hand, check out Blind Willie Johnson and Bo Carter. They played in other tunings, but used Vestapol tuning too. Vestapol is all about the intervals among the strings (1 5 1 3 5 1) You'll find that the pitch might not be open E in these old dudes tunes. Sometimes up to F for example but you can use a capo to match them.
@@BluesGuitarInstitute thanks for the suggestions, I'll be sure to check them out. I'm familiar with some Blind Willie but not Bo so I look forward to hearing some new old blues! Thanks again and all the best.
The slide is my Ariel Posen signature by Rock Slide. I absolutely love it. I go back and forth between it and my shorty from Rocky Mountain Slides. Thanks for watching!
@@BluesGuitarInstitute I have the same slide and switch between it and a hand made crystal glass slide by Diamond Bottleneck Slides who are here in the UK. Great Rock Slide that though.
I see that with the Resonator, you are using "Piedmont" style picking. Thumb and one finger. I have struggled with that because I have always played modified Travis picking using all of my right fingers. My fingers resist thumb and forefinger only.
Hey Richard, it's the Ariel Posen signature Rock Slide. I really like the ball end too. I didn't use it in this lesson, but it's perfect for targeting single notes on the inside strings while avoiding the strings not being played.
@@BluesGuitarInstitute its bad ass!! I just checked amazon for it, but, i live in japan... the only thing to come up was a bunch of little mermaid merch... lol
Another great video - I'm recently subscribed as a premium member - would recommend to others as for me the tab is essential!
Thank you, Neil! Happy to have you as a member! 🎉
Brilliant! I'm new to slide and loving it. More videos like this please!
Thank you, David! Will do!

Great lesson! Also, the new fiddle looks and sounds sweet!
Thanks! 😃 I'm really digging it and wishing that I had it sooner....much sooner!

Awesome, happy to help 👍
Great intro to open E and slide - thanks John!
Thank you for this nice lesson!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and commenting 🙌
Nice choice of axe. A Honey Dipper has been my main for a few years now. Great instrument.
Good to hear, I think I'll get along with this one for a while too 👍
Quality video, and quality guitar too! Bought a Honey Dipper a few years back second hand, nice to play in the garden over summer.
Thanks, Matthew and I hear you. I was picking on the back porch the other day when the weather was really nice. 👌
Excellent!!! I love blues and slide. This lesson in fantastic
Glad you like it!
Resonators are quite fascinating for the sound they produce, blues all the way...great Tuesday blues, thanks John 🎶🎶🎶
Thank you Nicole! They are definitely a different animal and I am really enjoying this one.
Would be great to hear your opinion on a few budget resonators. Thanks for your great lessons
@@GuitarguyRichard56 Yes, I didn't think of that. Do a review like we have for acoustic guitars 👍🎶🎶🎶
Wow this blew me away john!
Thank you, Tom! Really appreciate your comment my friend. Play On!
Excellent choice on guitars. Those Honey Dippers are some of the best sounding resonators out there. And great lesson for it's debut.
Thank you, I'm really happy with it and I think it packs alot of wallop for the price.
@@BluesGuitarInstitute Check out Justin's reaction the first time he strums his th-cam.com/video/9FKwRM8MJvU/w-d-xo.html
Congrats on your new Honey Dripper! I tried one before settling on my Regal Tri-cone💖 Now, I will work on your lesson! Thanks!
Thanks! I considered that one and can certainly see a tricone in my future....oh boy 🤦♂️

John-- one of your best lessons !! Works for any decent guitar with a strong neck. I am working on this on my Rocket UFO Republic Parlor Resonator..
Awesome, Mike! Glad you liked this one.
This is the kind of stuff that justin johnson does that I wanted to learn ❤️
nice! yeah, he's pretty great.
Justin Johnson is a fantastic player!
Jason Johnson is an incredible player and im finally figuring it out after years of practice
He is a good teacher bloody exceedingly good
Thank you, Rob. Cheers!
Thanks John. Exactly where I am at,learning to create my own slide blues tunes.
Nice! Let me know how it goes, I'd love to hear something that you come up with!!!

Nice slide work! Inspires me to break out my resonator. What slide are you using? Thanks for the lesson.

Interesting. I'm curious what brought on the honey dipper when you've already got that way nicer gold tone.
It's very different and I really wanted an all metal body one. Also, planning to keep one in Open G and one in Open D 👍
what kind of slide are you using? all the ones ive found are tubular...
