Today, a QB in Brady's situation would just hit the transfer portal, and finish up his career at Eastern Michigan or UC-Davis or some such. He'd pat himself on the back for finding a program that wanted him to start, and never have any idea of how great he could have been. "Those Who Stay ..."
And then he went on to take Drew Bledsoe's job as the starting QB of the Patriots. Make no mistake, that is a tremendous achievement for which there is no trophy. Bledsoe was a #1 draft pick, a Pro-Bowler, an AFC Champion, and had just signed a 10-year $100 million contract and was still very much in his prime. Guys like that NEVER lose their jobs to a backup.
And when Brady suffered a season ending injury in week one of 2008, Matt cassell led the patriots to an 11-5 record and they still missed the playoffs due to tie breakers. They lost the tiebreaker for the division with Miami and the tiebreaker for the final playoff spot with Baltimore. So if they had won those tie breakers and made the playoffs and Cassell leads the patriots to a super bowl victory over Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals, does Brady get drew bledsoe-ed? Would cassel have been the starter for week one of 2009? Seems a little unfair what happened to bledsoe considering he cane in relief of an injured Brady in the 2001 afc championship game and threw a touchdown

It's crazy how similar Mac Jones story is. Wasn't highly recruited out of HS... went to a great college at Alabama... was the 3rd string backup for most of his career... when he was supposed to be the starter he had to fight off a mega talented freshman in Bryce Young... and went on to have one of the best seasons ever winning the championship.

Even after winning three Super Bowls, his high school listed him as the second best athlete to graduate. The first was Barry Bonds. It wasn't until Bonds' use of steroids led to his elimination from several categories that his school decided that Brady was the better athlete. He's fought against being second best (or seventh best, in the case of the draft) his entire life.
