Just looking at the intermission pictures. Thinking those are possibly in 32 colors (or 64?) in Amiga. These are not much colors but the careful selection of palette, the dithering, etc makes them look like VGA 256colors images. They are masterpieces. Nowadays you can't do see such good art with millions of colors.

Dimmu Borgir brought me here. Judging by the epic music I thought it would be an adventure game. Alas, it is a side-scroller with an owl that shoots lethal sonic waves.

it had immensely influential artwork, both audio and video, it was absolutely stunning for its time.
but it's true what you said, I also wish it wasn't a game that it was.
on the other hand, I literally came to this video, after I whistled the main theme tune while doing my dishes.
it's been almost 30 years ffs.
sometimes I'm curious about whether the creators of these games know how far-reaching their products are.
in space, time, and across cultures.

IMHO, this game was a beautiful demo of the Amiga chipset capabilities and a work of art. Incredible music, great graphic style, very great skills from the developers. BUT... As a game itself it was a little boring after a while. If I remember well, you could not interact with the background and it could never damage you, so it was just beautiful background art. If you removed the amazing graphics and music, there would be very little left.
I remember I used this game (and Shadow of the Beast) just to impress friends with inferior machines. But when I wanted to play an horizontal shoot'em up game and have fun, R-Type was my preferred choice. Not a perfect conversion, but it was good enough, nice and smooth, good music&FX and each level was very interesting to play. It was my preferred choice until Apydia come out...

I was thinking of this game but for some reason I wrongly recollect it being on the PC. I think I'm getting it confused with Myst because of the cover art. I do vaguely remember Unreal at the time and I don't think it was a big hit in our home. Good to know it's the same team, I may, because of that, have a quick blast on Unreal, see how it goes down 20 years later.

+alxxpspqr - the game uses a fairly ingenious composition of hardware tricks, but this video isn't adding anything to it filter wise. Technically it is 'underscanned,' like SotB or a lot of other games which try to fully exploit the hardware sprites; unless maybe you meant the use of interlaced output purely to soften the image and get a smoother looking gradient in the horizon colors. *** So basically half of the 8 hardware sprite channels are given to the owl - why it's so detailed and colorful - and another sprite-pair is reserved purely for the scroll special attacks. Of the remaining sprite-pair, one is used for the main attack and the other covers every standard 'yellow bullet' from the enemies, and as the color palette is shared that's why you see flat white in both - and that's also why you get the odd but cool range mechanic of doing more damage up close, since only one of your 'shots' can be on screen at once. Everything else is animated with blobs (blitter objects) drawn to the main buffers in dual-playfield mode. So with two 3 bit buffers a total of 15 active colors are available - one of the front colors is 'transparent' - but the back plane is effectively reduced to 5 colors by the trick which affords the third parallax layer. All the extra color is from 'copper' interrupts then, which has it's limits and so you see the mix of brightly contrasted sprites when they aren't sharing lines with the foreground image, and sprites which blend in when they do. What it all then amounts to is a mixed framerate in which the main sprite (owl) and assorted 'bullets' along with the scrolling update at 60fps, while all the other enemy and background animation is a lower refresh, probably 20 or 30fps.

Let me find the link to the page of Frank Sauer, where he explains that the game use Dual Playfield and copper, but in a very ingenious way so that more copperlist per frame are alternatively used.
