I only have one filter for my Mini 2, its the Freewell ND16CPL filter and does a great job in the right conditions, though most of my videos are done without any filter as i am not trying to make a movie lol.
Thanks for the advice Gav, I need all I can get, that's if I remember to pack them in the bag - fit them to the drone or even click record as the drone is taking off.
I always shoot in Pro mode yet that exposure compensation (MM) that you mentioned in the Fly app is always greyed out. So I tend to use a ND64 on bright sunny days. ND16-32 on overcast days and usually ND8 for sunset when the sun is close to the horizon.
I completely agree that there are no rights or wrongs, do it the way you want and be happy. Of course, as you rightly said, under is easier to fix than over
Yup! I use all those. I've an even quicker method... guessing! With a bit of experience of using these methods for the season and the time of day, most flyers will usually guess it spot on first time. I usually use a stronger filter than the app indicates though - the light will always be brighter at higher altitudes.
My method is more technical but at the end of the day your way makes more sense, just fit the one you think and see if you’re happy with the image, if not change accordingly !
@@GAVINHR As a Content Creator, you have much more at stake than me. I watched some drone shots taken by a creator near you where the shutter speed was too high for the frame rate and panning speed. The jitter was so awful that it was almost unwatchable. I suggested he try an ND filter... unwelcome advice, according to his Subs.😂🙄
Well isn’t that just typical! I mean the irony is I have often advised that ND filters are not needed for most people and I stand by that which is why you never hear me talk about them unless it’s something like this. After seeing 4 posts in a single day the other day asking how to choose the right one I figured I would quickly cover it
That was an issue for a long while and still is to this day, creators saying you need ND filters and footage looks better with them, that’s rarely the case and I’d say that 90% of the stuff hobbyist drone users produce will never need an ND filter. I’ve tried to get people to save money by mentioning this many times and highlighting the correct uses which is all I can do. Thanks for watching
Good tips, but the best way to find out what filter to use is to print my How To Film With ND Filters, you go by the Shutter Speed and just at the print out and look what filter to use., no more guesses and try on and off filters. And also it has a gray color so your footages will be easy to color correct.
This is true. But you measured it when you were indoors. What about when flying it? The light will surely change. Do you fly then land again to keep changing the filter?
Perfect ND filters! I love them and use them all the time! and the ND filters with polarized options are good to use. It is all a personal opinion too! The Mini 3 Pro lover
Sorry to ask but I am confused. In the clip you suggest that you require an exposure of 0.7. When you switch on the light the drone shows an exposure value of +1.0 You then fit the first filter and the exposure value goes to 0.0 when you fit the second filter the value goes to -0.7 Is it correct that the value should be -0.7 and not plus 0.7. I am still trying to get my head around the whole ND filter concept and when and how to use them.
That light is dope…mind dropping the name of it or where to buy it? Thanks for this video bruh using the DJI info they provide for what filter is a game changer
Ya very important to have ND filters , i might of mentioned before i actually bought ND filters before i purchased the Mini 3 ,infact i use MCUV filter all the time cause the lens itself doesn't have a protector
Great video.... I was just wondering what your thoughts are on variable ND filters for someone like me who is not super into photo/videography but would like to improve overall image quality with less fuss?
is the 0.6 a random number you choose or is a all around good suggestion to aim to that number? Best Regards form Puerto Rico a place where if it is not , it is really sunny all year long summer jajajajajaj
Hi Gavin. I noticed most I've these ND filter video guides are shown with an ISO setting of 100. Would you say that's pretty much the standard default setting to start before you pop on the filters? Many thanks for you video much appreciated 😊👍
What do you think about the new update Tuesday 25 yesterday v 1.7.8 (1755-official) it's mostly for mini 3 pro but I noticed some bad things on the mini 2 camera not saving to phone, also flight log is in metrics, I have it set to imperial united states, few other things with air 2s . DJI IS A PAIN IN THE RUMP ROAST 😆 🤣 😂 . KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS GAV !
DJI HAS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE UPDATES WORK WITH ALL OF THE DRONES IN THE FLY APP BEFORE RELEASING 😆 🤣 I MEAN FOR REAL FIX ONE DRONE AND Screw up all the others. My $5000 DJI mavic 3 cina should be perfect at all times regardless of updates....now it's acting up after new update slow satellites again, o my lord have mercy 🥺 😳.....
In the the example you gave, you were at 4K60 with 1/60 shutter speed. Couldn't you lower the exposure if you increased shutter speed to 1/120? Also, do you turn the drone off before switching filters?
Hi there, great spot ! Of course I you could do exactly that but it was more about demonstrating the MM figure and not talking about the motion blur etc on this video so actual figures used are not really important for the principles shown. Yes I always turn the drone off to not put any strain on the gimbal motors 😊
Time of day is my clue of filtering, early morning 20 minutes max, sun-down again 20 minutes max. Bright mid-day well yeah work them filters, but usually a planned shot, image, video will have to wait for that golden, meter friendly light to make it appealing. Harsh shadows and glare are so damn FLAT, and boring unless your in close where it will not matter. Cheers!
Great advice Gavin (and from the Hull area the same as me, looking at some of your other videos 🙂). I bought a set of PGYTech ND filters for my Mini 2 which I've had just a few months and it does make a difference when trying to get close to the 180º rule 1/60 sec shutter speed at 30 fps. I'm still learning, but hopefully improving with each outing 😉

Hi. What should I choose between the ND 8-64 or the ND-8PL to 64? Is there a big difference between ND and the PL filters? Thank you.
The difference is huge between Nd only and Nd with pl in cases with a lot of reflections like bright day sea photos and videos
Nicely explained Gavin :)
