  • This is a review for my Poulan Pro PR5020.
    It is a 50cc chainsaw with a 20 inch bar. And I know I called the bar a blade in the video..... my bad! Its not a blade.... I think I actually called the chain a blade at one point as well....
    Final result.... Its a chainsaw.

    When you adjust the carb right they will fire up very easily 😊
    I’ve been using them for many years
    You can limit the oil flow just by reducing the exit size with a tad of jb weld and tad of skill

    I have an old Poulon saw that calls for 16:1 and I can’t kill it. Freakin old and built to last. I have a Remington 4620 and it requires at least 60 seconds to warm up before you start in on it. Runs on 40:1. I was running everything on 16:1 just because I had to mix it for the old Poulon saw. Weed wackers didn’t seem to mind. Smoked a little moreX ran my modern saw on 16:1 several times because there was some in the can and wasn’t any 40:1 left. I would run 40:1 instead of 50:1 because it’s not that much more oil and the harm you risk is fouling the plug faster. Someone said 32:1, why not

    I’ve cleared several acres of forest with this model. It’s great for mid-level use. Starting isn’t as easy as I’d like, and it does indeed drink up bar oil.

    Have the same saw, used to spray chain oil everywhere and always leaked while sitting in the case after use when I was using the cheaper bar/chain oil. Switched to the poulan brand bar/chain oil and made a huge difference. Goes through a lot less oil, each time you burn through a tank of gas it’s ready for a refill of bar oil and no more leaking. The cheaper stuff is just too thin which causes all the problems.
    Also if you gap the spark plug to .030 it will solve most of the starting issues.

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to look into the oil... I am tired of the inside of the case being covered in oil. And yes!! I made a video about opening the spark gap. Made a HUGE difference.

    • @STILL-KICKIN
      @STILL-KICKIN 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Warped Legacy $28 p/gallon on Amazon, you might be able to find it a bit cheaper. Pricey I know but if you use twice as much of the cheap stuff it all evens out in the end. But no more oil puddles in the case at least.

    • @Mike-su8si
      @Mike-su8si 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That'll solve all of his hot starting problems like I said he'll be happy with that setting and don't need to go out buy other plugs
      Because that original plug will last for years.
      I think my original plug is finally getting worn down after 7 years of using it

      I use old black oil and 10w 30 motor oil for my bar
      I've tried cutting oil and cutting oil is to thin for my saw
      My 7 year old pr5020 is still really good and I'm thinking of buying another one it sprays the oil out just how I like it. I wish my cheap stihl would spray out oil like that but shes to tightly made or just cheap

    Loved the video!
    I just bought a pr4016 2018 model that has been refurbished, on sale for 100$ a week ago.
    Personally running 32:1 premium, gapped the plug to .030 (it was bellow .015 when first checked it).
    Replaced the refurbished chain with a Stihl Picco super 3 chain and boy she cuts now!
    It's keeping up with our Husqvarna 440 filling the woodshed at work.
    Best investment I've made.

  • @AlmostHomestead

    FYI...Pretty sure that the manual says to engage chain brake when starting. Chain should not rotate at starting idle speed or idle speed can get out of whack.

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah. It's mostly a safety thing. Lock the chain so it doesn't go when it starts. It's expected that the engine would run fast enough to rotate the chain when the choke is on. When the choke is on it will be faster than idle. The chain doesn't rotate at idle.

      I have so far had one problem with it. On two occasions after I used it for a while, and then shut it off, I could not get it started again until it cooled completely. I have since read that it might be the spark plug that comes with the saw. I have found others saying it is not gaped properly, so when it expands the gap closes. Supposedly all I need to do is widen the gap on the plug. I plan on pulling it and gaping it properly soon, but I have not yet, so I have no first hand knowledge of whether this actually works. Hope you enjoy your new saw!!

      Certain plastics swell with the Ethanol content of fuel. Carefully thin down / resculpt the cap threads with a Dremel or hand file. Helps to minimize the amount of swelling by leaving saw dry when not in use.

    I've put a few dozen tankfuls of 50:1 full-syn through a PP5020; still runs like new. Poulan bros pronounced name like "Poland" without a "d". Bar & chain are oddballs, for (nominal) 20" small-mount Husqy- chain is 70 DL vice "normal" 72 DL, OEM chain is "Vanguard", with wide depth-gauges that take many strokes. Full-chisel cutters go dull like a light-switch; your clue is sudden dust output. I much prefer semi-chisel, like Bailey's "30 SC". The 2 nuts that retain carb can loosen; they grab plastic, so LocTite is highly advisable. To get at them you'll have to pull a semi-fixed plastic shroud. Air filter generally leaks at mount; tiny bead of silicone stops the leak. OEM (70 DL) bar is still in great shape. $180 inc shipping refurb: atwww.vminnovations.com/Product_91757/Poulan-Pro-PPR5020-BRC-20-Inch-Chainsaw-Certified-Refurbished-.html

    Okay, no offense, but I burn wood for heat! I've just bought a new PR5020AVX myself! My last poulan a PP4620AVX again a 20" bar. Bought in 1990, it's seen it's share of parts! ! Had it's flaws,
    The new 5020 has more problems that a product should have! The air filter is a joke! The filll caps caps trap fine dust around the cap. You have to have a tooth pick and a rash to wipe the dust before you refuel. No one should have to pump a primer bulb 10x's to start something! The idle needs constantly changed, and the air filter cleaned with each task of fuel! Just like anything, when it runs it's great. So far, 2 months in, I've spent a lot of time fixing, repairing, and cleaning!

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not easily offended. The only problem I've had is the spark plug gap being too short. It wouldn't start when it got warm. Since I fixed that I haven't had any problems with it. I burn wood myself, and I do maintenance at a camp with about 100 acres of woods, and they burn more wood than me. I don't take good care of it. It's a cheap saw. It's given me no issues at all since I fixed the spark gap. But it's def not a top of the line saw.

    I have the same. It does sling oil everywhere but it cuts like a Woodchuck if you get a Oregon Series 70 Chisel Chain. It turns that Pro into a real Pro! Only issue I have & it may have been a Manufacturer Defective Part. Is the Black Plastic Starter Gear inside the pull rope assembly. Mine has less than 3hrs on it when I pulled the rope & it just Stuck. I took off the cover & found the heavy duty spring under that black gear was bent outward badly.. Now I'm down for 2 weeks waiting on the replacement parts. I have no issues cold starting mine. Choke once, pull twice & she runs. I'm S of Houston also so it's always hot here. After she's warm? I just barely pull her & she fires. Before that gear & spring broke. Which still has me confused on how that happened. I work on small engines & I have never seen that issue on a newly used saw.

    @thesmallwoodlot433 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok now i have the same saw, after 3 years of use and abuse, it is still a strong runner, i have only tuned once, and dusted off once. The other day i opened it up to investigate why it would only run for about 2-3 sec, then shut down, during removal of the plastics, i found a nut that had vibrated off, and stuck itself to the magneto, where did this nut come from... the right hand side of the carb hold down!, my advice is to open up these saws and plastics and check all fastening hardware! They are good saws for the money, and can pull a larger bar 24 inch max. The company is under the manufacturing of Husqvarna, and you will even find some markings on plastics , other parts for logo of said company! These saws are not junk, they are the lower end saws intended for home owners and weekend warriors! I have cut over 40 cord of wood with mine, and minimal maintenance. I recommend changing the bar & chain to an Oregon bar and chain, both quality pieces that will last longer then the stock replacement. Oil pump is internal and not adjustable for the homeowner.

      Still should always check the gas when filling bar oil any way for safe measure because you never ever want to run your saw out of gas you always want to shut it off and refuel before it leans out from being low on fuel and it will lean out any saw will which will prematurely wear out your cylinder and rings

      I actually like the saw it's my go to saw. I put a regular chain on it instead of the anti kickback that comes with it and it saws a lot faster its really not bad. I wish they made another size up like a 60cc

    Gotta break in a PR5020 not by full throttle right of bat, run 4-5 tanks ( prefer 40:1 for a micron more lubrication) no higher than 3/4 throttle on small stuff . Properly broke in its FULL throttle the 5th tank. Some vids guys are like a teen w/boner full throttle 1st use & it stalls 3/4 in the 1st tree, after bitch'n it won't start & blame the saw.
    I Prime the bulb12 times w/full choke & give it 1-2 pulls then prime bulb 3-4 more at half choke & it'll start by the 2-3 pull. Like a chevy from the 70's it''s cold natured , 30 sec-1 min push the choke in it'll rev up fast, tap the throttle and let her idle for a 5 min warm up. Guarantee it runs like a raped ape & never stalls 1 time. Gas usage is surprisingly good, run 2 tanks in a row cut'n like hell, then let her cool a bit & repeat ( uses around 2 tanks bar oil to 1 tank of fuel) The 2 we bought needed idle backed off a cunt hair from factory than chain wasn't going at idle.
    Home Depot , price matched other stores $179 sale price + 10% off $161 - + each plus tax & throws wood chips size of corn flakes. Plus a solid aluminum clutch cover plate w/2 bolt & side chain adj. 2 saws cost li'l more than 1 $350 Echo 50cc 20" w/a plastic cover. A 46" diameter locust tree (dense hard thorn covered SOB's) is no problem. Their are 2 models, the PR5020 (a farm & orchard class) w/a black cover on the cord side, but the cover is yellow on homeowner class w/same bar & cc's but has lower diameter tree rating etc.

    Take your spark plug out an open it up to 25 to 28 thousands, that will help with starting issues!!

    Not to be a safety sally, but wear some damn safety gear... Everyone thinks accidents can't happen to them till they do. With chainsaws those accidents will likely maim you for life.

    I was told once (if I recall correctly) by someone who should know, that if you use a 2 stroke oil, mixed correctly, you can use just about any ratio (8:1 or 50:1) in any two-cycle engine. You only have to get the fuel ratio matched to the engine if you are mixing regular motor oil with gasoline. I don't know if I trust that completely, but I don't worry if im putting a 12:1 (from the 2-cycle oil bottle) into a 40:1 engine (or vise versa), and I don't seem to have any problems.
    That said, I usually buy the same brand oil mix as my saw...

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it probably doesn't matter as much as some would say, but I can mix 50:1... So I will!

    • @jondoe1457
      @jondoe1457 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always mix 50 to 1 (better safe than sorry)on my other poulan 50cc from 3 years ago,looks the same so im guessing the same basic parts just new plastics? After about 25 chains and 3 bars its still running with good compression but its clutch is worn out and needs attention all over,the larger motor just works less hard and yes you have to let it warm up before it will idle! the carb setting tools are available from Hooka? on amazon!
