Its an ethnic and political rivalry not sporting. Having them be closer would be nice but their not a small Club and their fans are way more hardcore than Barca.
If I was a wealthy owner, I’d buy Espanyol, Implement an identity in the club. Build them into a competitive team to really go against Barça in the derby and Madrid, qualify to Europe every season. Make it an organized team. And keep the club steadily runned. Good budget, more focus on the youth, buy the right players, fight in between 1-6th places to be in Europe

In fact it is one of the two flags (yes they have two, for reasons I won't get into right now) that are often used by Catalan separatists during political demonstrations, representing between 1/3 to 1/2 of Catalan society. This is not an official or institutional flag by any standards.

Certainly, to find Barça followers who aren't pushing for Catalonia independence is not imposible, in fact it's actually quite common. You can see surveys here and there. Almost 40% of Catalan Barça fans are not pro-indepence. And I tell you that fifteen/twenty years ago that percentage was definetively higher. That if we take into account only the local fans. Remember the club has followers all over Spain. It's actually much more common to find unionist "culers" than pro-indepence "pericos" (Espanyol fans).

Historically Barça has always been closer to Catalan nationalism in general terms (it has had more pro-nationalist directives and usually a bigger number of pro-indepence supporters). But both teams have a diverse fanbase, specially Barça which is very popular in the rest of Spain. It's not weird to find an independentist Espanyol supporter, although it's more common to find a Barça one. And it's even easier to find a Barça supporter who feels Spanish at least ti a certain extent, in fact before the 2010s Catalan independence didn't have much support. Just see all those Barça players who have played for the Spanish Selection.
Espanyol was literally set up for Spanish only players. Like Bilbao was Basque only. AC Milan was also Italian only that's why Internazionale Milan was formed. Bilbao is unusual still having kept this policy.

That's not actually true. Both teams have a huge variety of supporters. Specially Barça, which is one of the most popular teams in Spain and has fans all over the country. It's true Barça and their local supporters have always been closer to Catalan nationalism than Espanyol though. But in reality this rivalry is definetively not as polariced in political/identitary terms as say The Old Firm.
