The level of control demonstrated here is incredible. The footwork is so clean, he makes these complicated steps look effortless.

im confused about the weapon design and overall usefulness of these movements. is there another video that puts this martial art in context?

It’s my understanding that this style was specifically designed for trapping other weapons. It’s odd shape gives it the ability to intercept a wide variety of weapons. (Spear, sword, dagger, etc.)
As for use case, I would see this being an uncover guards preferred weapon.

Trap, throw, kill. The circular steppings are throws/sweeps. I think the applications are apparent from the set.

Those things have spikes pointing toward the wielder's wrists.

You do not understand the weapon. That's good for the wielder of the weapon.

Good input, just to clear it up though, you keep your hands in that initial upright position the whole time, and in a fight would only vary off that occasionally. The reason he’s demonstrating other movements is to show off his control, and it’s a great workout! Keep fighting 👍🏻

Bro he would literally chop you to pieces if you’re in a street fight. You realise that centuries ago all the martial artists used weapons?
All that shit you see in the movies and them fighting mma fighters and boxers is crap.
They ALWAYS used weapons which is why their stances are usually so ridiculous. When you watch a king fu movie and the actor does little flicks at the neck, that’s not some spooky pressure point Hollywood shit, it’s literally because they had daggers and would cut your artery’s before you even landed a punch.
The little of what was left of Chinese martial arts was systematically eradicated during the invasion of China by Europe, japan and Russia.
Be thankful there is still some left. It’s truly unique and a precious part of human combat history we should all respect for it centuries long domination in great Asia.
