April, 2024 Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This was such a cool song. I was a child of the 60s (70 years young now) but I kept buying records (tapes and CDs) right through the 90s and into the early 2000s. Stopped for a while but have been buying some old vinyl recently and buying new CDs by old favourites. Mark Knopfler, Shania Twain, Terri Clark, Robert Plant duo with Alison Krauss, and others. I have this Rubettes on a 45 single.
Thanks for the video. I am 64 years old. At the age of 16-17, we played it over and over on the tape recorder. When the batterries ran out, we would rewind the tape on a pencil. I still listen today.
Yeah, I noticed that too! Most of them aren't even looking at the singer even though he's right in front of some of them! Hardly any of them keeping beat. It must've been a bit soul destroying for the boys. Alan probably thought he'd lost his touch! He hadn't though.....I couldn't have kept my hands of him!😁
I was 12 - 13 years old when this came out...remember watching on Top Of The Pops, now I'm 61 and still love this. Thanks for this video, brought back memories. xx I agree about the audience, I would have been going crazy lol.
Same age as you Joann. We really lucked out for hearing the great music of the 60's and 70's. What I wouldn't give to be able to go back and live it over again. Life was so much better than today.

The beginning of the song is probably the greatest most exact sound depiction of the glorious feelings that rushed into every human the first time they fell in love. Prove me wrong.

Was going out with this beautiful girl in the world and 44 years later she still is I love her more each day she can break your heart with just a smile
I remember being on holiday on the Isle of Wight and going into a record shop with my parents and the rubettes were in there I just about died on the spot still have my signed record I’m 62 this year buT the memory still makes my heart jump lol
Absolutely love this song , it takes me back to my youth and it was one of my first records ever bought . But recently I found out Paul Da Vinci actually sang the lead vocals and he has the most amazing higher range of chords I've ever heard , this guy was just a pretty face that took the glory .
Yes you are correct. It is no secret that Da Vinci put this vocal down as a demo with other session musicians. It is a matter of historical fact. This song was offered to 'Showaddywaddy' who declined it. 'The Rubettes' were formed who did not play on this at all, they mimed it and kept miming to the original track 40 years later. All the versions in this montage are the original. Bunch of fakers and belongs in the dustbin of history.
@@kennethdrayton770 It's a very interesting story, and Da Vinci himself has spoken about it on a channel somewhere. Curiously, he did join a version of the Rubettes at some stage but went on to pursue his solo career. His power falsetto made this song, originally it wasn't written as such. He suggested it and the moment that the falsetto powers out from the speakers, you know he can sing. Compare it to the weak falsetto on 'Tonight' and the difference is obvious.
I think you will find that the current lead singer also has a similar voice to Da Vinci and actually did their own version of it, after they parted ways with Da Vinci (Sounds almost identical) and then they "mimed" to that one going forward, not Da Vinci's, hard to tell the difference. Both Da Vinci AND the later singer you see in this clip were spectacular. There is actually a youtube clip of a person going into detail and matching the sections where they both slightly change their tones throughout etc, very interesting clip to watch.
God this brings back so many good memories. Now when I listen to this I some times cry. "Why" I just wish I could go back there and not come back. I miss it so much. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
