My family did a similar thing on my birthday when the children's hospital I basically grew up in was having difficulties. 3 of us have birthdays within a month and did a "no gifts, just money for donations" thing. Of course, we aren't famous and it was a bit before huge internet fundraisers, but I have seen people do this before. Both "normal" and celebrity. It does come off kind of shady at times though. Especially with the funds going to HER first. 👀

And she’s not a non-profit so she can’t give tax deductible receipts to anyone. It sounds like they’ve just given money to a woman not a 501c3, so their donations AREN’T tax deductible. But when she makes a big donation herself, literally double the amount that’s actually hers if she’s actually giving it all to charity, that’s tax deductible for her. She gets a massive benefit. Maybe that’s part of the platform, idk.
Since she is not a nonprofit all the donations her company received is considered taxable income. Yeah the company benefits from the charitable contributions but her overall revenue increases which technically could increase her taxable liability. But she probably has enough accountants to figure out how to offset it.
She explicitly asks for gifts for her birthday as a donation. So people are gifting her money, so she can use the money however she wants as it is not a donation. It is so tricky.
I’m a CPA. I remember reading a court case in grad school where a person had accumulated funds from his fellow church goers for donation, donated the funds on their behalf, and then deducted the amount on his personal tax return. He was audited, taken to court, and ruled against - he had a lot to pay following the court ruling. I wouldn’t be shocked if the same happened to Colleen (and I frankly hope it does)

Also Fundly takes a HUGE cut from the overall donations, because its a for profit company. For some fundraisers $20,000+ went straight to Fundly all for the privilege of the money going to Colleen first. IMO if she was crying about the cost of postage, there is no way she was covering the cost of Fundly's cut + all the prizes + donating herself. She is way too cheap and selfish.

It would be interesting to see if the donated cash was being collected in an interest bearing account and whether any interest accrued from those funds was donated as well. If she’s still collecting cash from those open fundraising links, a lot of interest could have accrued over the years.
It’s also interesting to me because she seems like someone who loves praise/external validation and has a pretty intense superiority complex. Wouldn’t showing receipts get her the praise and attention she craves? It’s so suspicious because posting receipts is EXACTLY something she would do to show how generous and noble she is.
Have people tried contacting the charity directly? They probably won't give put the details but if enough people say they are worried they donated under false pretences and to a scam then it would be the charities responsible to check that? It would be easy enough for the charity to look at the amount donated on the website vs what they have personally received? Everyone who donated should be asking to get this looked into via the charity and the authorities.

Almost EVERY other youtuber who holds a charity event makes it damn clear to 1) not donate if you can't afford to and 2) that the donations go STRAIGHT to the charities and not through thejr own bank accounts- And 3) even for those who may want to donate the money for tax purposes, they almost always donate their own money too- Sometimes doubling what was raised. Examples are Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Crankgameplays- Etc etc, all youtubers that make just as much as Colleen. So why in the HELL does that money go straight into her account???? She can easily donate less that way. And it's extra shady she won't show anyone what she donated.

There’s no “probably” about it. The money comes into her account in small increments and goes out in one lump sum. It gives the appearance that she herself is making the donation and greatly reduces the amount of taxes due at the end of the year. This is 1000% what she’s doing. So even if she is donating every penny, she still saves thousands of dollars at tax time.

If the money is going into a bunch of different accounts before it is being donated, it’s harder to investigate and really see how much money she’s keeping for herself, and how much she’s donating. This is crazy, another youtuber, Charles Peralo, had people vote for charities to donate to, and the amounts were between $20 to $50 and he posted the receipts. It is not hard.

Businesses do the exact same thing and claim customer donations made at the register on their taxes for a tax break. When you donate through a business or a person, you aren't eligible for a 501(c)(3) tax break, but the business or person who turns the money over to the 501(c)(3) is eligible. It's certainly not fraud and it's certainly not illegal, but it does kind of hurt the selflessness of individual's charity work if a person uses other people's donations for monetary "gain". Honestly though, If I lived in California, I'd probably claim it on my taxes also. The taxes and regulations, which also cost consumers money, in that state are ridiculous.

On the 2019 donor list (any donations made from Jun 2018 to June 2019) she was listed under the donation category of under $50,000. However, as you showed she raised over $80,000 in her first fundraiser. Wish I could see when she shut down the donations page, but it appears there's 30k missing. 🤔. Edit to add reply: there is also a donation from Miranda Sings Inc also for less than 50k, which would match up with her matching any donations. However, that donation also being under 50k still leaves the question of the remaining 30k, maybe pocketed or incldued in her personal dono.
I also just saw that, which would make sense if she said she matched donations. But still the Miranda Sings Inc donation being under 50k as well doesn't account for that last 30k, unless she donated that as part of her personal donation, which would then be the tax writeoff.

I would suggest that if people want to donate to childhood cancer that they stop going through Colleen and go directly to the charity itself. Don’t make her the handler of your well earned money.
Better yet don’t donate to charities except St. Judes and Ronald McDonald house because the rest are scams. I’ve worked in research and in clinical medicine and no one on our side sees a cent of these donations.

A tactic she used was strongly emphasizing that "every PENNY gets donated". She states this many times every fundraiser. She better have impeccable records to back up that claim. Also Fundly takes a HUGE cut from the overall donations, because its a for profit company. For some fundraisers $20,000+ went straight to Fundly all for the privilege of the money going to Colleen first. IMO if she was crying about the cost of postage, there is no way she was covering the cost of Fundly's cut + all the prizes + donating herself. She is way too cheap and selfish.

It would be interesting to see if the donated cash was being collected in an interest bearing account and whether any interest accrued from those funds was donated as well. If she’s still collecting cash from those open fundraising links, a lot of interest could have accrued over the years.

Have people tried contacting the charity directly? They probably won't give put the details but if enough people say they are worried they donated under false pretences and to a scam then it would be the charities responsible to check that?
It would be easy enough for the charity to look at the amount donated on the website vs what they have personally received?

Adam, as someone may have already commented, she is likely transferring the funds into a high-yield savings account where you can accrue interest around 4% APY (or if not more if she's transferring to a short term CD). She's making money on that interest plus getting a tax break for her donations.

This is so important to bring up! Almost EVERY other youtuber who holds a charity event makes it damn clear to 1) not donate if you can't afford to and 2) that the donations go STRAIGHT to the charities and not through thejr own bank accounts- And 3) even for those who may want to donate the money for tax purposes, they almost always donate their own money too- Sometimes doubling what was raised.
Examples are Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Crankgameplays- Etc etc, all youtubers that make just as much as Colleen. So why in the HELL does that money go straight into her account???? She can easily donate less that way.
And it's extra shady she won't show anyone what she donated.

There’s no “probably” about it. The money comes into her account in small increments and goes out in one lump sum. It gives the appearance that she herself is making the donation and greatly reduces the amount of taxes due at the end of the year. This is 1000% what she’s doing. So even if she is donating every penny, she still saves thousands of dollars at tax time.
The 2018 fundraiser literally has a “Support Colleen” button. Clearly accepting gifts and confusing those donating.
It's not so much charity fraud, but tax fraud, which has severe penalties like prison time if found guilty.

The only reason people muddy the waters, and make shit confusing like this, is so that their grimy behaviors are not as easy to shine a light on. If the money is going into a bunch of different accounts before it is being donated, it’s harder to investigate and really see how much money she’s keeping for herself, and how much she’s donating. So the only time people do shit like this, is when they are trying to hide what they’re really doing or people who are trying to secretly skim off the top.

This is crazy, another youtuber, Charles Peralo, had people vote for charities to donate to, and the amounts were between $20 to $50 and he posted the receipts. It is not hard.

This is common and BAAAAAAD and she is correct - there's only TWO ways she showed on that roster as such. What she's also omitted is that by dumping the charity bucket into her personal finances, it allows her to "launder" money gained by sketchy means by "donating" it away. And if anyone ever asks, she can point to the fundraiser and say, "Oh teehee, everyone knew this is what I collected it for, it was gifts, I donated their money". But because she's intermingled it.... she has the ability to conceal, eg, ill gotten funds (wild example, not saying it's true, say she was collecting VennMo payments for handing out wacky tobaccky....)

Businesses do the exact same thing and claim customer donations made at the register on their taxes for a tax break. When you donate through a business or a person, you aren't eligible for a 501(c)(3) tax break, but the business or person who turns the money over to the 501(c)(3) is eligible. It's certainly not fraud and it's certainly not illegal, but it does kind of hurt the selflessness of individual's charity work if a person uses other people's donations for monetary "gain".
Honestly though, If I lived in California, I'd probably claim it on my taxes also. The taxes and regulations, which also cost consumers money, in that state are ridiculous.

Got curious and decided to look at the previous years donor list from CHLA. On the 2019 donor list (any donations made from Jun 2018 to June 2019) she was listed under the donation category of under $50,000. However, as you showed she raised over $80,000 in her first fundraiser. Wish I could see when she shut down the donations page, but it appears there's 30k missing. 🤔.
Edit to add reply: there is also a donation from Miranda Sings Inc also for less than 50k, which would match up with her matching any donations. However, that donation also being under 50k still leaves the question of the remaining 30k, maybe pocketed or incldued in her personal dono.
