Got to love Skoda, used to have a Mk1 Octavia vrs and it was brilliant, now driving a mk4 golf GTI, which is essentially the same but with out the boot. No complaints about the car at all.
I love mine too, only quibble is that here in Australia, the spare parts and servicing is very expensive compared to similar cars of that price range. I will buy another one though ;)
great video ive recently joined a skoda dealership as a mechanic been there 6 weeks driven both diesel and petrol vrs octavias and have purchased one in race blue went for the desiel option as will be cheaper in all accounts well built cars faultless infact so much fun to drive
What a great car. I bought one a year ago and I am very happy with its performance, roomy interior, ride and construction quality. I really recommend it!
I have to say, this is the best packaged Skoda yet. It looks great and offers something genuinely unique, sort of inbetween a hot hatch and performance saloon. I would really question the need for a GTI when you can have a bigger, great looking, 5 seater that pushed 150 mph instead...
I really like the look of these cars. They are an efficient, neat design that has a touch of old-school but modernised enough to catch the eye. I am glad Skoda have stepped up :)
Well, this is the first Skoda model I really like. Skoda makes good quality cars as expected from a car maker under the VW flag. It is fast, comfortable, and has excellent MPG. Excellent work Skoda!
Looks really nice. Have to hand it to Skoda with their current cars - they are really rather good. Have owned Audis and VWs before and they are class leading in terms of build quality and finish. Had the misfortune of owning a Seat Leon Cupra R 225 mk1 and it really justified the label of being a cheap VW. Awful build quality and loads of cheap plastics etc. Would've had the same fears with Skoda but have to say that they are every bit as good as the VWs. I also have it on good authority from mechanics in the know that current Skodas are as well made as pretty much anything out there. People really do need to forget the image of the past. These are good cars!
Another excellent XCAR review - And may I add not the most obvious choice of car, which is brilliant - This diversity and jumping between many different cars is what I really like about you XCAR - Keep up the good work and thank you ;).
Im really glad that you like Skoda, because Im from Czech Republic (Skoda is Czech). Its good that people started to like Skodas becase they are one of the most reliable cars you can get and im absolutly serious. This one is probably first Skoda that i would want :-D Other seems boring mainly because every other car in Czech Republic is a Skoda... Still Skoda is one of few things we can be proud of :-)
Skodas nowadays are very very good cars. I live in Germany (I'm not German) and people love the Octavia, the Superb and the Fabia. And I think the Octavia VRS is the savior of the average sensible family man who still wants something a bit faster and exciting to drive. It's really a bigger more practical Golf GTI. I'm not a fan of VAG Group (Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat) because I'm a RWD guy and for me BMW and the Japanese will always have the edge and God Bless soon Alfa Romero with their new RWD models.
Alfa Romero :D I agree with you. I'm a RWD guy too. Currently driving a Jaguar but looking for some Mercedes or BMW in next few years. I also want a petrol V6 or V8. My Jag is diesel and it sucks (ugly sound, smell and poor throttle response).
Toyotas are one of the most reliable cars you can get and I’m absolutely serious too. Perhaps not exciting to drive but definitely most reliable. Skoda used to be very good before diesel particles filtesr and small turbopetrols engines.
Affordable? Really? when was the last time you checked the pricelists? A Focus ST is just 2.000 euros more and if you compare kit, the Skoda will actually be more expensive. What these sneaky VW bastards do is show you an attractive price for Skodas, but they actually lack a lot of stuff that a base VW gets as standard.
It says how some people think they are just an eastern block of metal that will break down at a moments notice. Not necessarily true. I have had skodas in the past, a 1.6 fabia scout and have currently got a 2.0 Octavia SE L. Not one of them have broken down. They are one of the only reliable cars I know.
I've been indecisive between a E92 320i touring or the Octavia Combi VRS. If I want the same kit on the beemer then on the Skoda, it would set me back an extra €12.000!! That is a lot of money for a badge and rear wheel drive. Personnaly, I'm leaning more towards the Skoda for it's sleeper/underdog image. But I concur with the review, interior is a bit dull compared to the BMW.
Their nice but like VW and Audi seats and a steering wheel is all you get standard , I want one with leathers , Auto headlights , auto wipers , auto dim rear mirror , 4x elec Windows , headlight washers . That's all options
Oh, and Skoda did work it's way up from the good but modest Favorit, Felicia and the first Octavia that way a grown up car (Golf). They had the luck to work with germans (owners) that wanted a good product and did give them some of the new tech. Otherwise we would have another Dacia that tries to do the same thing but with less finesse and older tech...
Dacia doesn't just try, it succeeds in a very very big way. The difference between Skoda and Dacia is that Dacia makes much cheaper cars. If you look carefully at price versus spec, a Skoda is very, VERY similar to the VW it is based on.
Brilliant video as always. I really like the Skoda´s of today, but the one problem I have with them are the people who buy them. - Let me explain; due to the good value for money it is the perfect car for the young family where the parents haven't really owned a car before and therefore are pretty rubbish behind the wheel due to a lack of driving experience. The brand is great and quality wise it is pretty much just like any other VAG. ... but God I would love to own that Octavia VRS
Can you share the name of the song in the beginning? I know is some soviet era song but would like to know which song is it. Great video by the way, keep the good work
Nishchal Sharma I thought that as well, but it can't be, the standard car could've easily done 140mph, so we're nearly at 250km/h already, guess it is 227mph
It is just as overpriced, because it's exactly the same technology. There may be a few hundred euros difference spec-for-spec, but you will notice every bit of that by having less soundproofing, worse materials for the interior, etc. Don't be fooled into thinking that it's cheap and it makes sense to be cheap because it's from Eastern Europe. It isn't. Audi TTs and Mercedes CLAs are made in Hungary. Are those cheap? No, they're not.
I was driven in Skoda Superb and VW Passat - both with 2.0 TDI engines , both saloons/sedans , similar spec and I have to say that I found no diference in comfort , apart from Skoda being softer and cost about 3000 Euro less .
Skoda was the laughing stock of the motor trade many years ago . The headlines in a trade paper was ' heard the one about a skoda what will do a 120 mph ' Who laughing now ??
+Stephen Thompson Are you saying it is BETTER than other cars? Maybe they catched up thanks to VW but it sure doesnt look like they have gone beyond any german brands, or japanese for that matter, a mazda 2 still outlasts anything VW according to the German TUV. Skoda was so crappy that one could also say this about their quality now: "its about time, welcome after". But laugh away, and continue to imagine that owners of other brands are fearing Skoda and hiding in shame, sorry to say its all in your head.
i have a 1Z2 4x4 TDi and in rainy or cold weather, it is a lot faster than the vRS because of the huge amount of grip (2x 225mm vs. 4x205mm). Driving in the dry through corners, the vRS is much quicker because of the 4x4's much higher centre of gravity and the extra 80 or so kg for the haldex system and the prop shaft.
Anyone who says that about any VW-era Skoda is just plain wrong. They're certainly right up there with the most boring cars on sale. VW tech all around, uninspired shape and no personality whatsoever. Even Kia and Hyundai are coming along much more nicely.

I think the point is that its more affordable if you dont spec the shit out of it.
As for myself i wouldn't call anything affordable above 8 large.
It is 6-speed DSG, not 7-speed.
I totally want this new Skoda, we have Skoda Octavia Ambiente and it's good too but this is just amazing ::)
I have the Octavia vRS before this, 2012 plate and have also debadged it. I love it!!!

Skoda is awesome!
So, it has an engine from the new Golf GTI. Well, that makes sense.
