    Whenever my mother (and I) sewed laces together, we sewed them atop an acid-free white tissue paper. It keeps the lace from slipping, you can better ensure that the two pieces of lace continue to butt against each other (eliminating those "holes") and, when the sewing is complete, you simply tear the tissue away. There are almost no tissue bits to remove and the few that are there are easily picked out with a skewer or fine point tweezers.

    Actually thought this was going to be a waste of time - I was wrong.
    This has been very helpful in how to attach lace for the bonnet.
    I didn't realise the bonnet was a flat piece of cloth gathered at back, tied in front. Very simple, simple design. No wonder they all wore them back in the day.

    If your sewing two delicate laces together begin by placing a bit of paper under the lace and begin seeing . Once finished make the paper damp and it will come off easier and the full length of the lace will have been sown.

    would have liked to see you put together as a bonnet at end instead of flat material and saying just fold and ta da a bonnet! Also I think would be better to use a wide piece of lace instead of sewing all the little strips

      Sewing lace pieces together is the basis of Heirloom Sewing. You actually make fabric this way, also making "fancy bands" for the bottom of garments.

      Hello, There are different ways to make bonnets, this kind/style is just one way and it’s easy for a beginner to learn, plus learning how to “make fabric” from the laces being sewn together will teach you how to create dress bodices, sleeves, blanket corners, etc. so you can keep building from your experience. Hope this helps.

    I think it's pretty incredible that the ENTIRE POINT of having a sewing tutorial VIDEO is for people to actually SEE you go through the full and complete motions of making the entire piece and how exactly all this theoretical talk of the piece comes together completely into a finished garment- not to just watch you make little sampler examples and then describe how the piece goes together without making any effort to show that to us. I mean really- if we wanted to learn that way we could just go read a pattern out of a book and then waist our precious lives trying to figure out how it gets pieced together on our own. Really-Why would you go to such incredible lengths to completely avoid the entire point of having a sewing video if you're not even going to show the entire process of the sewing project - in the video?

    Does anyone know a good (not too expensive) source for the laces and bridging needed to complete this project? I found one site that has a lot of lace but I can't seem to find the "ladder style bridging"? Also the site that has the lace is a little on the expensive side, seems as soon as you put "heirloom" in front of anything it becomes super expensive, even when the laces are still all machine made and are probably coming off a huge spool!

    • @onemercilessming1342
      @onemercilessming1342 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can start a search engine for "heirloom cotton lace" and "entredeux". The companies that sell them will appear on the screen. You can "cross-shop" to see which site is having sales or is a little cheaper than others. Just make sure that they are reputable companies. I;ve had the best success with companies whose owners worked with Martha Pullen ("Sew Beautiful"), but they are in the retirement zone now, too. Yes, heirloom products are sometimes rather pricey. However, the cotton laces, insertions, and entredeux are imported from France and Switzerland (and other places). If you're cost-conscious (and who isn't these days), you can find poly cotton laces and insertions at Hobby Lobby or Michael's or JoAnns--even Walmart. Honestly, I wouldn't put anything less than 100 per cent natural fibers with silk. Right now I am working on a silk dupioni christening gown for a new grandbaby. It will be lined with china silk. I found on eBay a 1940s pattern that has the coat, bonnet, gown, diaper cover, bib, booties all on the one pattern (it was uncut, too!!!!) and my daughter now has the choice of using the silk gown I made for her christening or using the new one I'm making now for her little girl due next year.

      babyjenks1784 It’s machine-made lace found at any sewing supply shop unless you are looking for hand-tatted vintage lace (usually found at your local church rummage sales). What this woman used was just machine-made laces, but she made it sound as if she was using something from the Victorian era.🧵😊

    So where's the part where it shows you how to make the bonnet? 11 minutes of information about lace, then 30 seconds of saying now do this and this and this! the end!

    These are beautiful . (Not to sound too complaining tho'.... just being honest.... It runined my viewing experience of the "How-to" video by letting it start out with an advert including people sitting at a table set with full wine glasses. Please, try and keep in mind that there are a lot of people who have suffered enough from the after-effects of drinking wine or anything alcoholic. God bless and please, if you must accept advertising ...... consider earing your 'pay' from advertising ICE CREAM or DAIRY PRODUCTS or CHILDREN'S VITAMINS or something like that.
    How about advertise for ONLINE or BRICK & MORTAR FABRIC SHOPS?

      @sachdevalamin3174 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TH-cam places the advertisements, not the content owner. The content owner cannot control what the ads are. There has been some conversation in the content producer community of restricting types of ads on their placements, but Google has been resistant.

    • @TheJudeJane
      @TheJudeJane 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Janet Bedford Not the TH-camrs choice what ads come on. My advice to you is this: Please try to be more tolerant. Life is too short to worry about a 30-second ad.
