This a prime example of why companies don't always need to re-invent the wheel. Not having the auto start/stop system is reason enough to buy one.

Buying a 2023 GX460 for the same reasons! Solid V8 never any problems.
I just bought a 2023 TDR premium. My 1s 4 Runner.Took it to Wyomig for fishing trip. Perforned very well on difficult roads. Got 22 mpg hwy. I plan on keeping it for 15 years. Wanted the v6. No turbo crap. If you want a rugged vehicle and dont want a pick up this is a great vehicle. Scotty is right. Simple vehicle. Will last for many years. You can shove electric vehicles.

I love my black edition 2020 RAV 4 XLE straight from the dealer in 2019 . I don’t even have 30k on it . The return value is worth a lot
Scotty, I'm totally happy with my 2019 Highland SE AWD Nightshade, which is probably more rare that this 4Runner.
There are plenty 4 runners with the same setup just no 40th Anniversary bs paint and labels. The TRD Pro is the best with a MANUAL TRANSFER CASE with a shifter not an electronic turn dial knob like this one.

4Runners can still run like a Swiss made watch even after 30 years. I just can't help but think that when they put turbo fours in them and hybrid systems that those won't be as reliable over time. Complexity will almost always sacrifice reliability and durability.

My daughter still drives my old 2003 4-Runner 4.0L V-6 with 387k on it, just normal maintenance.

You do realize you are talking about Toyota. They don't simply build something and throw it on the streets. They test and test and make sure there is the reliability that is expected from them before they release it.

In 2003 I bought a new 4runner Sport V8 and at 300000 miles it runs like the day I bought it. It is a rocket! best vehicle I ever bought.
Have the 2003 Limited with V8. Engine and tranny smooth as silk.
I had no idea they made 4runners that had v8s in them. Never worked on one yet.
I have Scotty’s dream car. 2017 4Runner, 2WD, made in Japan, naturally aspirated 4.0 V6, base model SR5 so no fancy suspension. Love it.

I love simple AC systems. They're easy to operate while driving without taking your eyes off the road.
The big clunky knobs are great. Easy to turn. Everything was built with a purpose. It's an awesome rugged vehicle.

It was such a disappointment when they dropped the v8 option. It didn't get considerably worse gas mileage and it made for a much better driving experience.
True , the 4.7 is a legend of an engine. Everyone wants an arm and a leg for a 4Runner with one so I got a sequoia and love it
Love my V8 07 4 runner...18 to 19 on highway ..16 around town...one tank got 23.4 with cruise set on 65...was full of furniture and dishes in the back...
I am FUMING. Seeing Toyota replacing bulletproof reliable NA port injected engines for less reliable turbo engines that get the same gas mileage is silly. If they replace the V6 in the Camry for a turbo four cylinder for 2025, I will scream.

Currently on my 3rd 4Runner (2019). I’ve only owned 4Runners. I truly believe that the 1999 used 4Runner I got in college would have lasted longer had I not been rear ended on the freeway. I walked away fine. Got a 2003 4Runner used after that. Lasted a really long time. No issues. Sitting at a light, a ford f150 rear ended me and somehow bounced off my vehicle and into a wall. I was fine, I was even able to drive home. The f150 not so much. I still don’t know how that happened. I ended up selling it and telling the buyer what happened. He bought it because it had 3rd row. Even with the minor cosmetic damage, he took it. I used the money to buy the 2019 4Runner. I always wondered what happened to it. did it die? Did it have other issues? Then one day I saw it on the road…6 years later. I still see it on the road too. Sold it with 150,000 miles and the damage. And it’s still going. I will forever buy 4Runners. I’m just pissed I missed the standard CarPlay…by one year! Btw this is in Hawaii. We love our 4Runners.
Those ones here are known as hilux surf and they are very reliable but also powerful enough to serve you. I like them.

I just got the new Prius. Came straight from Japan. Thing drives so smooth it’s insane. I love the car.
A Made in Japan would be best ... I must say ... the price holds but the quality has gone down. The paint scratches easily, front seat motor defective an the Dealers' mechanics are no longer mechanics.... not even able to align a new car properly after 10k miles etc

Yes. But Toyota has given us no reason to think their new engines won’t be reliable. They do years of RnD before release. And they lead the industry in hybrid tech. Look at Prius. Those regularly last 400k plus…

This is Scotty's dream car. It's like a brand new 15 year old used car. Gas milage?...who cares? 0-60? ...eventually. Wireless Carplay?...what's that? Government mandated 100 pixel backup camera....latest safety technology!

People don’t understand why to a Toyota. In Australia we say “ you can go to outback with any car . But if you come back alive need a Toyota.” So those people never care all these technologies. Still we need to wait for 79 series Land Cruiser for long time. No climate control just this year added automatic gear .

I will never get rid of it! Best vehicle that I have ever owned. Most of the parts are original. I can also tow 7,000 lbs with it.
My 26’ TT is roughly that weight. I’d love to hook it up to my 4R and watch the back bumper drag on the ground.
Had 295k on my '03 before I noticed a head gasket leak. At the time I couldn't afford to replace it. 2 years later bought a '21. My third T4R. Miss my V8, for sure.

Bought this same 40th ANNIVERSARY 4runner two weeks ago. "Certified Pre Owned" with 8200 miles on it for $44500. I think it was a pretty. good deal

Yeah I think you found a good deal. I bought mine new and few months later a local used dealer was asking almost what I paid for a used one. I went by to see if it was true but they were closed and I didn’t see it sitting out. At the time I had about 1500 miles on mine and that one had 3k. I wanted to know why the high asking price 😂 oh and the stripes were removed 🤷🏼♂️

I own a 2016 4Runner Trail Edition which I bought new. I must say this is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned and I’m 65 years old. I also plan on handing it down to my kids once I kick the bucket. Keep up on the simple maintenance and it will last forever 👍🏼
2014 trail edition here, most dependable and capable vehicle I've ever had.

I am with you Scotty! You can't go wrong with the naturally aspirated good old V6! That's also why I have on my 2013 Tacoma 4X4 TRD-OFF ROAD! I LOVE IT!!!
We dont have the 4Runner in Asia but we do have the Toyota Fortuner. Its just as tough and capable!

Simple is good. The less tech and turbos the better until proven otherwise.

It's a little more (maybe 6,000-10,000 more depending on trim) than id personally say a 4runner should be worth, BUT, they're proven tech and engineering from head to toe (even the TRD Sport XREAS suspension, which has questionable reliability, uses the specific model I can't remember the name of that actually do last eons), so they absolutely PRINT money for Toyota because of their ground level low prodiction cost. So even the limited versions don't need to be marked up a lot. Its MSRP is about as much as I paid for my TRD Sport with the dealer markup

I worked for Toyota in SF bayarea California. These 4RUNNER come in today and sold in 1 to 2 days.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I was looking for one. The one I picked out had been sitting on the lot so long the battery had died LOL. They jumped it and brought it over to me. It had a thick layer of pine needles from sitting under a tree for a few months. LOL I used that as leverage in negotiating the price. Said 3 families just left without buying a vehicle today... and I didn't see anyone in finance. Got a great deal on the vehicle... about $3k under sticker price after taxes and fees. That was summer 2020.
I bought my 4Runner in 2021 as it was being unloaded off the truck. Had 1 mile on it. Got a GREAT heads up from a salesman who knew I was looking for one
The 4Runner is a great truck. Rock solid reliable. The only real long term issue they have is the frame rust if you live in the salt belt. It's been a known issue since forever, and Toyota never did anything to negate it. You can mostly prevent it by applying Fluid Film every few years, but 98% of owners never do. If you're buying a used one, make sure to have someone take a good look at the frame.
Yup, I tell people this all the time when they buy new trucks but everyone is too lazy to do it. So stupid when you drop $50k on a truck. Either way, I had 3 trucks all fluid filmed looked brand new underneath after 5 years
@@davidr6865 paying $50k isnt smart in the first place..theyre all made cheaper now..but, all you have to do is go to a brushless car wash a few times a week ,do the body and underbody. My 08 civic SI and my ex wife's 14 escape titanium are both clean, with no rust. And ive never fluid filmed my cars or trucks. I've done some tasteful mods ..I maintan them all .and I keep them clean and washed, and don't leave Salt on them, but never fluid filmed any of them, and we live in NH, we get plenty of s on and salt
On modern trucks, don't they hot-dip galvanize the entire ladder frame before painting it? Or would that not give enough rust protection to justify the cost?
@@laura-ann.0726I mean different industry but we got dip galvi all pipework that is exposed outside and it last years in exposed conditions in the northeast. Id be really surprised if a steel frame is having issues with newer 4Runners or any truck for that matter. Maybe early 2000s but it’s 2023 now these new trucks ain’t rusting for over a decade

My wife has that same anniversary model and absolutely loves it. It also came with the ceramic coating and we didn’t have a choice. It did come equipped with the 40th anniversary carpet floor mats but purchased the rubber mats from Toyota as they are a perfect fit and last forever.

I bought a 2023 4Runner Off Road Premium a few weeks ago. In fact, the day I bought it was the day Scotty's last 4Runner vid came out. I absolutely LOVE it!! I chose the 4Runner for all the reasons Scotty listed. I want to drive my vehicle, not have my vehicle drive me.
Welcome to the club :D mine's a 2020 SR5Premium... Scotty approved! I needed 4 things when I bought my first new car... a radio, AC, Cruse Control, and Power Windows. Love the Adaptive Cruse tho, it's amazing.
You have the best setup, Offroad Premium is the best setup, I own a 30th anniversary and I wish I knew about the mechanical transfer case. You have the old school indestructible transfer case, I have the electronic one. Either ways they are reliable but I like old school simple cars.
I bought a loaded Sequoia SR5 4x4, 5.7L, towing package, every option except DVD player & leather (I prefer cloth here in the desert). $53,000. It has 178k mi and no major repairs except a rear main engine seal, probably because its 15 years old! It will last longer than me! I'll gift it to the next generation. I feel sorry for people who bought Ford, GM or Dodge junk. The 3/4 ton trucks with diesels are excellent but still are not as dependable as Toyotas of old. If I could buy a new 2024 Hilux diesel and get it into the US, I would. Would pay any price because they last decades.
There's one of these in white on a dealer lot in my town Glen Rock, NJ. Going for $45,000 I believe. FYI

sorry Scotty my limited Rav 4 hybrid is getting over 45 mpg regularly in town driving, which is at least 10 mpg better than the non hybrid and it has the get up and go of a v8 in a 4 cylinder with the electric motors to help it really gets with the program and my other vehicle is a Dodge Ram v8 hemi / I am not sure which is quicker off the start? It did cost 42k and I may never recover the difference in cost, but I really like it and at 75 years of age it might be my last vehicle.

Right, is it a truck or a computer? Thats why all the tech lovers out there say it needs updating in tech and/or body style. Like Jeep dosent? its had the same ugly mug for ever. No touch screen controlling mechanical operation for me thanks.

I bought a 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road just as the pandemic was beginning. I can sell it today for what I paid for it then. It's a solid truck whose only flaw is below average gas mileage.
Got my SR5 Premium in July 2020. OTD price was $41k or so... but we agreed at $37,500. I can get $39k for mine according to CarFax. Keeping mine for 20 years... so far it's only got 13,500 miles on it 😂
Just bought a TRD off road. One of my better decisions in life.
Scotty sure loves big SUVs with small turbocharged engines and CVT transmissions. Especially ones with electronic emergency brakes and touch screen climate controls.

I got a freakin Ford Explorer instead of a 4Runner 😫. Biggest mistake ever! Dealership already replaced the transmission at 20,000k!!

I’ve bought the 40th anniversary 4Runner in November of 2022 so I’ve been driving it now for almost a year & I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s a solid & reliable car, the TRD/Heritage stripes get people’s attention.
Hello Scotty. Did you notice that 2023 and 2024 4Runner the manufacturer put an actuator in the braking system . Is this a better braking System by putting an actuator underneath the brake pedal ? Just like everything else when the actuator stop working the SUV or car stop operating . When you get a chance to drive another 2023 or 2024 listen very closely you will hear a noise like vacuum air releasing every time you put your foot on the brake pedal . I hear the noise on my 2023 4Runner and take it to the dealer and the dealer said the vacuum air noise coming underneath the brake pedal is coming from the actuator underneath the brake pedal. Hope this helps . Thanks

I had the first 4runner (83) model 2 door roll bar detachable top with a 22R and 5 speed manual on the floor. Amazing truck went almost 500k miles. I miss that truck 😊

I bought a Toyota Van 1985 for 1000 and now I have almost fixed it up 100% and love it. Might not even drive it lol.
There were 22r 22re 22rte 4Runners but none were 1983 model
The 83 hilux had the round front
Totally different body style
The 1985 version would be most desirable in some ways since you could get 22re with solid front axle.
There were no 1983 4Runners
Then again 1988 was a very solid year
1988 had the tightest 22re ever made
Plus you had independent front suspension
All that said those trucks are tiny light cramped and slow
They were not indestructible either

Agreed. Simplisity is sometimes best. I love simple knobs easy to use which makes it safer so you can concentrate on driving!
That is not new. It is a 14 year old car sold as new. To think that Toyota could not make a new 4runner that is not just as reliable is ridiculous. I find the ridiculously long run to be just lazy and disrespectful to the consumer. The next version should already be the best vehicle ever made give they have had 14 years to design it!
We have a 97 4 runner. Built from ground up. Can run faster when it crawls. Gets 12 to 13 and it sits on 35s. Fully loaded 4x4. We love it.

I appreciate you for sharing your critiques. It helps me understand the different types of engines and basically anything else I need to know about cars and trucks. I’m not feeling the stripes on this 4Runner but I like the idea of this truck.
But the frame isn't going to last forever, and unibody construction isn't flimsy. Other than that...

Love your videos Scotty! I have a 2018 limited V6 which I love, but my only issue was the lack of power. I solved it with an after market throttle control called hike-it. Sweet running now like a V8. Yep I could care less about the gas mileage.
At the time of this video the owner flipped it and sold it for $65k

I own a basic 2019 4Runner 6 cly that gets 19.9 mpg combo driving. I hope the newer one does as well.

Bought a used 4Runner yesterday. The only differed between my 2019 and the new 40th is cosmetics. I almost got a silly crossover for the MPG 😂 If I end up commuting a lot in a few years I’ll get an old Camry and keep the 4Runner forever.

One of the last examples of perfection on wheels , have myself a 13 SR5 2wd and been perfect for 5 years , thirsty on gas only downside.
These things are the last of the truly immortal vehicles. My 22 Tacoma won't last as long as a 4Runner.

Sir, you are completely missing the point. One of the reasons people love these vehicles is because it doesn't have all the latest bells & whistles. However, it's still well equipped with the safety and comfort features most people want, and manual controls that are easy to use and don't break down. Like my father used to say...things left off a vehicle don't cause trouble.
@@johnbarbour115 this is exactly the reason I bout a 2020 4runner limited, just enough bells and whistles without any of the annoying stuff like auto turnoff when stopped etc and proven not some new model that you are beta testing.
You buy a 4Runner for reliability and quality not bells and whistles.
@@catdadd6808 Yep exactly why I bought mine in 2020... I wanted 4 things... a radio, AC, cruse control, and power windows LOL. Every car has that now. But the next thing I want is Lane Keeping and Assist. Long drives are better with the included Adaptive Cruse Control, but would love to have lane keeping and assist.

These newer Toyota 4Runner's are strong in reliability and on-road capability.
Hands down the BEST Vehicle on the road. Loved my 2007 which my daughter is still driving. I needed a bed so i bought a Tundra. Miss my 4Runna every day though.
I’ve owned many Toyota cars and trucks. Out of all the cars I’ve owned the best well made was my 2022 4Runner. Thing was built like a tank, I had sale it after getting 16MPG on average. Apart from the MPG I loved it.

Sucky gas mileage but you’ll save money on not fixing it. I rather have 16 mpg then paying for repairs.
@@MrOBJECTIVEOBSERVER no I bought it intending to get the advertised MPG but realistically MPGs we’re closer to 16MPG on average. Definitely not no 19 mpg.

@@FUT131 most of them are making better mpg’s with turbo engines which the 4Runner will have next year. I’ll take the old V6 4.0 old engine against the turbo engines. Btw the new 3.4 turbo engine in the new tundra puts out the same mpg’s as the old 4.0 4Runner 🤷🏼
Took me 10 years to be able to buy this vehicle, glad I was able to 2 weeks ago before the motor changes come.
When I was a younger I thought stripes like that looked silly. Now I think they look pretty cool, in a nostalgic kinda way.

Been saying for the last few years the car industry really needs to go back to simplifying there vehicles to much tech.
I got lucky bough 22 4Runner TRD sport trim.
I paid $3k over sticker December 2021. Probably over paid a little but got exactly the one I wanted. Looks great in midnight black I get compliments all the time. TRD sport is surprisingly nimble xReas suspension allows for very good handling TRD sport weighs few hundred lbs less than other trims I surprisingly get 22mpg on the highway but in town it is a gas hog.
I got test drive. Sorry too outdated. Awaiting new models to come 2024

Unless if ur weight around 3000 pounds. Like Suzuki - Jimny that little one has the similar hp, the same size of the liters of 1.5, and the same manual transmission (not truly the same of how they made), as the 2003-2006 Scion xB. And a body on frame.
