      One of my former colleagues and his son, both of whom were hard core 9ers fans living in the DC metro area went to Latrobe to check out the Steelers in training camp. Batch was the backup then. When he wasn't on the field, he chatted it up for a while with my colleague's son and made a fan out of him. Dude is solid as a rock.

    • @ThorMaximus
      @ThorMaximus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I disagree. In sense you’re using it “big break” is a relative term. 2004-2011: Steelers were very close to transcending to “Dynasty” team.
      Batch wasn’t starting QB but was big contributor when he played & helping younger Ben as veteran mentor who embraced role. He’s remembered for that & city/fans/team all respect.
      That earned respect opened doors for his current success today, as TV & radio personality-enabling him to have a platform, which like his career, he maximized.
      I was big fan of Tommy Maddox-I thought he should have been starter in 2001. 2002, he led one of best passing offenses by Steelers-EVER.
      But when times got tough, Tommy wasn’t up to challenge, a huge reason why Batch overtook him on depth chart in 2005 SB season.
      Batch was not as talented as Ben or Maddox or Leftwich... but he was integral part of team in his role & example of best you can be

As a Steeler fan, we were so lucky to have Charlie's leadership in Ben's ear and his heart on the field whenever Ben went down. To win 6 of 9 starts is exactly what you'd hope for in a backup QB. He’s made his money. He has his basketball camp and he still does media work for the Steelers. On top of all that, he runs a day care in the middle of homestead to keep kids off the streets during the day while their parents work. What a extraordinary man

    I had an opportunity back in 2004 to meet Charlie Batch when I was able to attend training camp as part of the training staff you talk about such an awesome human being. My first day at Camp I was eating lunch by myself away from the players and he saw me and came over and asked if anyone was sitting here and I was shocked and I said No it’s all yours and he sat there and ate lunch with me and talked to me more than anyone on that team. He was an amazing dude who should be in The Hall of Fame not because of his numbers but because of the man he was and still is to this day.

    An amazing guy there! Just shows how much football changes people’s lives... just think if he wouldn’t have had football he might’ve ended up in the streets and maybe even in prison for going after who murdered his sister or the coward that used her for a shield. Now he’s trying to change all these young kids lives that’s awesome!!! Footballers come from all walks of life and then help not only there families but also in communities and the next generation of footballers and on and on and on

    Charlie was important to the Steelers during his stay . You would always see him helping Ben make the correct adjustments . And if Big Ben went down Charlie could get the job done so Big Ben could take the time to heal . And playing in AFC North in the 2000's , it was TOUGH . You saw the best defense 2 to 3 times a year (Ravens) . And the weather in this region in early Jan is brutal .

    Character and off-field decisions matter.
    It's why Charlie Batch is beloved by team mates and fans alike and why he will be remembered forever in the history books.
    Also why Roethlisberger will never be respected or have an 'A Football Life' doc made about him, nor will he ever be in Canton.
