@@drampabay1476 Nah, because what if it triggered something inside him to relapse. You never know when people can relapse, and affect their mental psyche. He could of felt bad about what he did, and if he felt pressured, he could of relapsed. The Raiders did the right thing asking if he was okay, because they care. But even furthermore, Darren Waller agreeing that the questions were fine and he was comfortable is a massive sign that he's recovered both physically and mentally. The most relieving part about getting over your addiction is not having to hide it anymore. When I was in the process of getting over mine, coming clean to my family and friends felt like a bigger weight than the addiction itself got lifted off my shoulders
Broncos fan and I LOVE Darren Waller. He’s one of my favorite players and has my utter respect for talking about his drug abuse and hopefully it reaching out to others
Wow he was still cool with talking about it that's one thing I have trouble with still I'm a recovering addict is talking about in front of people cuz being ashamed of yourself and ashamed of letting your family down is one thing I'm struggling with I like that how he was still cool with it talking about it openly
@@nickbeam866 it’s because he’s rich, famous, and over the addiction hurdle. Talking about something openly is the biggest predictor of truly being over it. You don’t like talking about your problems because you still deal with many of the demons that come from it. When you become super successful you’ll stop caring about it.
Seemed like as soon as Steve started referencing the situation as "addiction" is when the PR team could see the attacking headlines writing themselves. Steve was talking unfiltered, which is good, but messaging is still important.
As a saints fan I was amazed on how he played against us. The guy is amazing. Got mad respect for him since the game and even more now that I know his story
I can not express enough how much respect I have for Darren and I cant wait to listen to him talk to our NY press after he wins games. He seems like a phenomenal person. Lets Go Giants!
That has been the 'Raider Way' for decades. We were always known for giving guys a second chance, who had major off the field problems, on the field problems, and who were just cast-off/given up on by other teams.
I had a pain pill problem after having 2 back to back shoulder surgeries at the age of 20 I had 3 more surgeries and I was hooked on painkillers for 5 years 2014-2019, I kinda tried to stop taking them here and there but they cured my pain, my anxiety, my depression, my lonliness which if you're addicted to something and you're not ready to stop then you won't stop it's 100% on you and it's a hard fight that almost killed me, and ruined my relationship with my family, because i was a terrible addict I blew roughly $60,000 in 4 years on oxycodone(percocet) started with 1 5mg pill and in a little over a year I was taking 10-15 30mg oxy's everyday. I'll be clean 1 year on November 15th, if you're out there struggling with addiction and don't think you're strong enough to beat it trust me if I can beat it then so can you. if only more stories like this were out there. the fact that he's an nfl player is irrelevant. i'm talking about a story of a man who nearly died because he never knew how to face his demons head on, overcoming all of that adversity and not only being happy again, but having a whole entire new outlook on life and the people in it. so amazing.
there’s so many. Being sober myself now, I’ve died and came back and still kept getting high because I just did not see a way out. You never know who’s an alcoholic/addict. Could be your neighbor, friend, son, daughter, even parents that need help. Thank God for the life I get to live today. ❤️
Yo, this interview is so honest and I’m not sure why he saw it through other than setting his path in the best direction. The interviewer was very respectful and the woman that interrupted the interview to check on the interviewee’s emotional safety is a responsible and awesomely assertive professional 🙏
Amazing story if that don’t show people that you can overcome anything and chase ur dreams I don’t know what will. I know nobody will read this but ur strong and if ur dealing with any addictions u will overcome them.
Wow, what an impressive young man and comeback. Having great parents helped him tremendously. As someone who has struggled with addiction for 15 years, this really hit home
What kind of program do you work? 4 momths sober and working with sponsees sounds pretty irresponsible. I know that no 12 step program ive ever worked would suggest that situation.
As a addict in recovery myself being clean and sober for 11 years and 10 months as of today I'm inspired by Darren Waller's testimony. Darren Waller is my keeper this year, and I remember last year I drafted him super late thinking meh, he'll be a decent pickup. It's not until now that I'm watching this and seeing the kind of man he is. I really hope he keeps it up and pushing himself to be better.
She was on point
As an addict, who had thrown away his early life to drugs and alcohol, and having now been clean & sober for 27 years,
It broke my heart when Darren's early career with the Ravens was not to work out. I wanted to reach out to the organization and pass on what was freely passed on to me, when learning a program of sober living.
I am so glad Darren has been able to turn his life around ! Sobriety has been the biggest blessing in my life, and I see how the miracle of sobriety has also blessed you 💜 Darren 🖤 !
My son's got your autograph
after the open practice at M&T.
You commented on my son's Top 🎩 Hat. It meant a lot to him !
Thank you to both SSSr and Darren Waller for doing this interview🙏! It's very important work to pass on our blessings !
Much love ! ❤
Well done Darren Waller, clean and sober is the best life.
I'm an alcoholic/drug addict clean and sober 26 years, one day at a time.
One in ten get clean and sober the first time in rehab, just like I did.
Very humbling and grateful to live life clean and sober.
"God, grant me the serenity,
To Accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference.
Well done mate.
Well done to everyone who are clean and sober, and prayers and good wishes to those who are trying to get there.
Love and respect brother 😊❤🙏🏽💯
That's awesome. Clean and sober myself, have a family and working towards finishing my school certifications. Keep it pushin'.
Peace king
1/10 does not sound like a lot. But it shows that is indeed possible if you keep fighting.
Peace and Blessings to you!
His complete and utter honesty is what makes him so relatable. He is helping so many people, and he deserves everything good that comes to him. Love and respect to special dude!
Very humbling and inspiring story.. stories like this is the reason why I never would try to insult Josh Gordon because you never know what they're going through.. wish this kid much success!!!!
Shows how good of a guy Harbaugh is, looks like he really cares about Darren, not every coach cares about their players like that it’s great to see
The most relieving part about getting over your addiction is not having to hide it anymore. When I was in the process of getting over mine, coming clean to my family and friends felt like a bigger weight than the addiction itself got lifted off my shoulders
@@louie5581 great comment. i hope youre still doing awesome!
Darren Waller already a star, but this video gave me his respect for life. People never know the story behind the scenes. So happy for his success.
Broncos fan and I LOVE Darren Waller. He’s one of my favorite players and has my utter respect for talking about his drug abuse and hopefully it reaching out to others
Wow when the Raider PR made sure they were respecting darrens privacy 🙏🏽
Love his honesty and accountability. I'm a fan.
You could tell when they told harbaugh that he was passed out while they were, he almost started to tear up or cry, that man cares.
As a saints fan I was amazed on how he played against us. The guy is amazing. Got mad respect for him since the game and even more now that I know his story
I'm happy for Darren Waller. I wish more people suffering from addiction had the support he had to help him get rehabilitated.
I can not express enough how much respect I have for Darren and I cant wait to listen to him talk to our NY press after he wins games. He seems like a phenomenal person. Lets Go Giants!
Say what u want about Gruden, he gives guys second chances when no one else will
Fr #Raidernation
True ..just like Al Davis
Facts 💯
That has been the 'Raider Way' for decades. We were always known for giving guys a second chance, who had major off the field problems, on the field problems, and who were just cast-off/given up on by other teams.

I remember hearing about his story on Bussin with the boys. The guy is a stud and gets better and better each time he steps on that field
I remember hearing about his story on Bussin with the boys. The guy is a stud and gets better and better each time he steps on that field

This was one of the best videos I’ve ever watched.
Much Love to Darren for all that he has gone threw.
Amazing story if that don’t show people that you can overcome anything and chase ur dreams I don’t know what will. I definitely cried because my brother is in that same spot and it’s been years since I’ve felt like he’s my brother. I know nobody will read this but ur strong and if ur dealing with any addictions u will overcome them.
Let Go and Let God ‼
Look at the look on Steve Smith's face at 11:22 man, his former teammate so shocked showing he care's about this young man's life and story
I've been a Raider fan for over 50 years and I LOVE that this guy is with us. Beautiful story, great player, RAAAAAIDERS!!!!
Wow, what an impressive young man and comeback. Having great parents helped him tremendously. As someone who has struggled with addiction for 15 years, this really hit home
His story is inspiring af
I got 4 months sober today and showed one of my sponsees this video. It’s very powerful
What kind of program do you work? 4 momths sober and working with sponsees sounds pretty irresponsible. I know that no 12 step program ive ever worked would suggest that situation.
Waller sent by the Gods to the Raiders.
Seriously though that was honesty and after watching that respect for you went to another level.

Glad Waller found himself! It took great personal growth and I’m glad he is now a top tier Tight End

As a addict in recovery myself being clean and sober for 11 years and 10 months as of today I'm inspired by Darren Waller's testimony. I'm so happy for him and he is a inspiration for anybody that is facing insurmountable odds. And I'm delighted that he is a Raider☠ Live long and Prosper Brother👊✌💯💖
Takes a hell of a man to address it like this, hella respect hats of to this man
Gotta love this story. Gotta love John and Steve smith they show they really love Darren Waller change his ways and for John wish he turned it around in Baltimore but he’s happy for him 💯
Chills. Love this dude. Definition of a Raider. Been through some stuff, but always come out on the other side stronger and better because of the struggle you had to go through.
As a Colts fan, I'm so proud of this Dude. Much Respect and Raider Nation you got an absolute baller!!!! Good luck the rest of the season ya'll.
This story really touched my heart. Just because he grew up in what we all think is easy, life is still hard . His parents were there no matter what , that is Love.
I'm a Dad of four and your story just touched me deeply ..... thanks for the inspiration!
He's on my fantasy team. What a legend.
Same, Only had 1 bad game im pretty sure
Same saw something in him last season so I picked him up and this season I drafted him, hasnt disappointed
So so so happy for him. He seems like such a great guy. He seems to be such a bright light for people. As a police officer I see the other side of this. The people who don't change and don't ever make a decision to fix their life. As a raider fan I'm so happy we have him. But more than anything in glad he is a positive influence on so many people. D Wall keep being great!!! RN4L

@@Zubicob oh shut up, he left a positive comment and you still try to give him hate.
and as a police officer you rest your head well at night knowing you arrest addicts ruining their life instead of knowing they need help not to be locked in a cell huh

Proud of you man. Real proud.
Crazy testimony Glad u had a second chance....Keep ballin Waller! 🏴☠️
Powerful story it’s amazing how God works. I’m so glad the Raiders gave him a chance to play again. #RaiderNation
Thank you for your story. I've been 6 months sober now. Used drugs to cover my pain of my lost time with my children. Now I'm using everything I can in my power to see my children more than ever. This video is so beautiful! From the story of him overcoming the addiction, to Steve Smith’s grace in the interview with each question, and then the PR lady stepping in to make sure he was comfortable emotionally with discussing it. Awesome video
Brought tears. We need this type of healing in the world right now. In all you do may you be Blessed Young Brother.
This made me teer up!! From drug addict to top 3 TE in the National Football League....just WOW!!!
Great story about triumph over adversity. God Bless Waller!
His great grandad was legendary jazz pianist Thomas “Fats” Waller. He was incredible.
I’m a huge raiders fan and had no idea that was his grandad. That’s awesome
Fats is his grandad? Thats crazy.

When his dad started to choke up that hit me, so many players don't get that second chance that he did, he took his opportunity and made the most out of it. So excited to see this mans future
I love Jazz. Thank you for sharing this.
This man is such of talented player I pray he continue living that good life
Always liked this guy on the Raiders, heard rumblings of previous substance issues but never knew the depth. I can’t explain how much respect I’ve gained for this guy. To want to change for himself, to turn his life around and to be open about his struggles is so damn admirable.
This is such a great story. I'm glad he followed through on getting himself help and stuck with it. 👍
heard him talk on pat mcafee's show but the detail in this is amazing, much credit to him and all the best in the future hopefully many can be inspired by his bravery putting it all out there

End the drug war. Help addicts don’t hurt them
Lolol. Clueless
@@richardwhite6062 what u mean clueless? the addicts shouldn't be getting years in prison just for being hooked on something. It would be cheaper to rehab drug addicts then to imprison them
@Just think that still doesn’t help people that get addicted to drugs as you heard for Darren and a lot of others it started with prescribed pills
@@CameronL211 bro some people just dont understand. Imprisonment for addiction makes so many people much more worse off to the point they never recover. And yeah securing borders is a good thing but, no matter how great the security gets, they will always get through. Money talks and people get paid to look the other way, and they do just that. So its inevitable that its never going to stop.
Instead of encouraging people to help addicts why not encourage people to not get addicted to drugs in the first place
Inspirational clip I’m glad he turn his life around . We all go off the trail like myself but it’s the hardest part to get back on that trail that takes courage and deep commitment….. Darren thank you for being a Raider and most importantly for being a role model for people trying to get out of addiction
Waller is a true inspiration to those of us with issues with addiction. The guy almost lost it all, but came to his senses and conquered the necessary obstacles. Now he’s second best TE in the NFL, he will be the best once Kelce loses a step. I am not a Raiders fan but Waller has me rooting for him and the team, so I guess he has kind of made me a Raiders fan in a sense. I love Waller and love his story, I’m truly happy that he turned it all around. He’s sure a fun player to watch, the Raiders got a good one.
This hits me hard. I respect D. Waller for doing this man! I'm going through it now living in my car. Been clean for a few weeks but lost everything and trying to fight my way back. My daughter's need me
Good for him. Always love to see a positive outcome at the end of some dark times. I am now a Waller fan. Keep it up man.

You got to respect a man that doesn't hold back of all his faults he told the truth you can tell awesome story
So happy 😀 this kid is a giant now
This is one of the greatest nfl stories I’ve heard of, mad respect for him actually talking about it
They need to make a longer one of this to show what he did after being reinstated, and what he is doing now although many people already know, but for people who don’t it would be good
Darren Waller just got my respect more. “I wasn’t ready to help myself” is a key to understanding the addict mindset, very glad to hear he’s clean and how successful he has become💯💯🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Every time I go through a rough patch I come back and watch this video and it lifts my spirit. Hope Darren knows that he’s got an army of fans supporting him and wishing him the best. Imagine bullying Darren Waller in HS for “not being black” that’s so messed up
I doubt it was a white person doing that either. People are jacked up
That happens to dark black people also i should know ive always been told im white or act white just because i talk proper and carry myself with respect ..it sucks that society thinks because youre black you should automatically be ignorant and not care about your life
It’s a huge problem In This country , and the people saying that kind of shit are the same ones who cry that they are oppressed, the only person who can “oppress “ you is yourself. Doesn’t matter your skin color, your religious beliefs, or your economic situation, and. The only way out isn’t sports like Darren Waller, look at Doctor Ben Carson watch the movie gifted hands, if your hungry enough you can make it, saying I can’t make it because systemic racism or institutional racism is An excuse a way to blame others for your lack of drive, unless you pull yourself up, nobody’s gonna : being white is not gonna make you successful, if you wanna confront your biggest threat of your own success, your oppressor, get your ass up walk into the bathroom and look in the mirror, there they will be looking you dead in the eyes, it’s up to you to decide!!!
