After our dinner at Pemberly
You played the piano and sang so beautifully
But more than I could ever dare hope to see
Were your warm and tender glances directed at me.
Later, to friends, my ardor became quite known
Of how, over time, my admiration of you had grown
And those early opinions of you I came to bemoan
Oh Lizzie it's you I love, you alone.
All evening long I would contemplate
Is it too soon or ..perhaps I should just wait.
But I made up my mind not to hesitate
And secure your good opinion before it is too late.
At Lambton I found you in such a state
I tried to console you and your tears abate
It was torture to see your heart break
Wanted to hold you close and soothe the ache.
A revelation of an elopement you would intimate
With Lydia and Wickham, a person I absolutely hate.
What could be done to find Wickham and set him straight?
At stake is your good name, I dare not procrastinate.
Had not my pride and vanity been so great
Wickham's character would be known and open to debate .
Lydia and your family he could never implicate
In a scandal so deliberate and delicate.
You must have been long desiring my absence
This unfortunate affair will prevent your presence
At Pemberly for dinner this evening , hence
Our relationship must remain in a state of suspense.
Be assured of my secrecy in this matter and I do vow
To promise this wrong be made right ...somehow
Now to you I must gracefully bow
Having stayed too long ....I shall leave you now.
