Hey shannon, any chance you could do a quick video on why organizations choose to buy players out? How is that advantageous for an organization? I'm thinking specifically about parise and suder from the Minnesota wild. Who seemed to still be cap space locked because of the buyout? I don't understand how it's beneficial financially for teams
Whelp, should just started with chat GPT... NHL teams buy out players primarily to gain salary cap flexibility and to address roster management issues. Here are some key reasons: 1. **Cap Space Relief**: Buying out a player's contract allows a team to spread the remaining salary over a longer period at a reduced cap hit, providing immediate relief to fit under the salary cap. 2. **Performance Issues**: If a player is not performing up to expectations, a buyout can be a way to move on from that contract without having to trade the player or keep them on the roster. 3. **Roster Space**: Teams may need to free up roster spots for younger or more promising players, and buying out an underperforming or surplus player can facilitate this. 4. **Financial Flexibility**: By reducing the cap hit, teams have more flexibility to sign new players, make trades, or extend contracts of key players. While buying out a player does result in a financial penalty that impacts the cap over several years, the immediate cap savings can be strategically advantageous for managing the team's overall salary structure. Number 1 was the answer I was looking for. Still wish there was a better way to search specific videos on the channel.
@@Jmanrocks321 better than paying them full value to drag their corpses around the ice some more. parise just retired, i believe, and suter just got bought out by another team, so two teams are paying him to not play for them. i wish i could get that gig.
Those were really , really bad deals and they were for a long long time. The buyout is about freeing up cap space - plain and simple both players could still play - albeit not up to the level that their contracts were paying them as they both played last year in the NHL. The structure of the buyouts - were that they were going to have to eat a lot of dead money the first couple of years but it goes down substantially after that.
