I agree, for a long time I have strained to learn to be a more precise Dragoon by learning fights, and the timing of my jumps; I tend to make healers more stressed now due to threading the needle with my attacks. XD

Pro-tip for mastering the evasive leap with Dragoon: spend a lot of time jumping and spinning your WoL around in the air while moving; once it becomes second nature to reposition your WoL this way, you can quite easily spin yourself around to jump in the direction you actually want to, upping your mobility significantly. Of course, that can't stop you from overshooting, so getting used to just how far your jump can take you is also key.

For a WoL in particular, there's more to some of these jobs than just the lore you touched on here. The WoL who mains ninja actually started as a rogue, for example, combining the knifework of those upright thieves with Doman techniques to create entirely new abilities. The rogue guild also has their own code and serve Limsa Lominsa and her people from the shadows...a lot like ninjas do. The class leads into the job very well from a lore perspective.

I'd like to add to the Reaper segment that the WoL in particular is VERY VERY rich in aether, and for the WoL that mains Reaper, they need to be on near constant alert, because the voidsent on the other side of their avatar I'm sure would be more than eager to wait for them to make a misstep so they can have all that sweet, succulent aether to itself

I do love how Post Endwalker MSQs gives a bit of a sneaky lore and has unique dialogue options exclusively for the RPRs mains where Zero actually compliments you for not going crazy and noticed that we didn't force out avatar to serve against its will and instead treated it with care.Something which is a huge foreign concept to not only her but most void sents and contracted avatars as they lived a more different lives.
That and exploring the 13th also gave me a weird feeling where the Avatar you're contract with isn't technically evil per say but more misunderstood and necessity in which if you have respect it and treat it with care as eventually It'll grown onto you and you can even forge a bond with it.Granted you're still not supposed to get TOO attached with it otherwise you'll risk losing yourself and succumb to its power but if you got what it takes to tame your avatar. You're ready to defend anyone,It's like DRK in a sense.
But treat it like Zenos where all you care about is power and hunger in which you abuse the Avatar you've contracted to a point even that fears you and well...
    You'll break yourself.
Either Way,RPR needs more lore man.i do find them quite fascinating and i sure there is more to them than just being an "edgy lord",an impression DRKs had to Deal with yet their lore is spectacular.

Minor connection- the first Dragoons weren't dragon _slayers,_ but rather dragon _riders_
The dragons of yore took Dragoons with them to battle as comrades in arms (in Tales from the Storm, it's mentioned Ratatoskr herself was a known fan of this co-op)

    • @SynodicScribe

Careful, that's not entirely true. The individuals you speak of did indeed exist! But they were not the dragoons we have. Prince Haldrath marked the beginning of Dragoons as we know them, and the discipline became tailor made to slay dragons. It ceased being a Pre-Dragonsong art many centuries ago.
Perhaps it has the chance to become what it once was in ages passed, but that will take time, and only the dragons themselves would remember what techniques those knights employed. The Holy See would have made sure the Soul Crystals didn't possess Pre-War knowledge.

....The frog summoning comes from the 1806-1807 novels Katakiuchi Kidan Jiraiya Monogatari. Which was the direct inspiration to three characters in Naruto; Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru (thier names and associated animals literally did not change between inspiration and reference). The Immortal Toad Ascetic is not only Jiraiya's temporary mount, but he is also his mentor that teaches Jiraiya all the magical arts. Shinobi also often carried short swords, but paladin already exist in the game. So they had to change the name of the item type to refer a different weapon.
To be fair Naruto takes a lot of references from a whole slew of sources from modern, fictional and historical in origin. From the old Kodan naritive arts(Sarutobi Sasuke), to historical novels (Jiraiya), to folk tales (Princess Kaguya), to classic mangas(Yu Yu Hakusho) and this is just 1 character reference sheet. But do to its popularity a lot of people just lump it up to Naruto. The tropes that make up Naruto existed long before the manga was made.

It's interesting you say this because for me, Samurai and Dark Knight seem to be two sides of the same coin. The art of Samurai Musosai passes down to the WoL is that of following justice instead of a lord and delivering said Justice to those who have strayed from the path, similar to Dark Knight. However where a Dark Knight would simply kill the wrong doer and strike fear in others, a Samurai would spare their life and simply cut down their "evil" inside, thus giving them a second chance to be better. So a Samurai is almost like a Dark Knight but more focused on honour and mercy. This is not to diss DRK tho lol, simply two different paths I find cool.

The reason for people saying Samurai should have been a tank is due to how Samurai play in Tactics (where all these classes come from anyway). Samurai in tactics wear heavy armor and are used as front liners to take hits and dish back the damage. So any who play tactics expect the Samurai to be tanks, specifically retaliation based tanks.

Samurai used to be my sword using main, but when you realize there's three sword wielding jobs whose lore tie them to being historically protectors and vassals to lords, until they turn their attention to being one that follows a wanderers path to strike down evil doers... As someone who has leveled and plays every job, it's hard to know what I consider as my "main" job since I try to be flexible for the people that I play with. That being said, I do feel like I have a "main" job in each role being the job that I enjoy playing the most and Reaper is by far my go-to melee job. Honestly, Reaper lore seems pretty simple and it suits me just fine. I've made a contract with a voidsent who gives me power in exchange for suckling on the life of my fallen opponents which means that I'm hella powerful AND my voidsent is eating GOOOOD! Thanks to what we know about the void and voidsent now, it's also apparent that our contract with our voidsent is perfectly equitable despite Y'shtola giving us a slight warning about utilizing said power. I've personally always been a fan of a class or job that utilizes both magic and swordplay so while Red Mage stymies me a bit being too slow with it's casts I feel extremely powerful and quick as a Reaper who can go into a mode where I rip and tear super fast and end with a powerful bit of void magic. Just seeing how cool the job already is at this point makes me extremely excited by the prospects of what will be added to it in the next expansion.

    Awesome video as always, Scribe.
While I'm a tank main, I do enjoy playing Samurai as my personal pick for melee DPS. And, yes-I'm actually one of the people surprised that Samurai isn't a tank job. This is because it always seems to be portrayed as a heavy armor fighter class in every bit of media outside of Final Fantasy XIV.
Going back to the lore side of things, though... Instead of taking on the lore of the Samurai as it was intended, I actually have a different bit of head-canon of my own. I've spent some time on it, and it actually kind of tracks since I'm probably one of the few Samurai players who make use of a weapon that isn't an uchigatana: the Crystarium samurai blade, which looks more like the two-handed Swiss saber.
Honing in on that head-canon: whenever I do play Samurai in content, I instead pretend the skills used by my character are actually derived from the Ivalician Divine Knights. You know, those guys who are more dogmatic than they are truly righteous or indignant towards authority-like the Holy Knights and Dark Knights respectively.
I pretty much pretend that the main shtick of my 'Samurai' was the Crush: Weapon, Armor, Helm, and Accessory skills the Divine Knights use. I liked expanding the idea further to the point that they wield these arts with a weapon intended to cut instead of pierce-like a single-edged blade of a saber, et cetera-as a show that their arts are so intense and their conviction is so strong that a blade not intended for striking solid body defense like steel will find purchase anyway.
As an aside, I laughed at the Reaper meme because that's how I play mine: a farmer with a big scythe-and even the glamour I use reflects that. In much the same vein, I pretend my Dragoon is actually a Limsan spearfisher. If Ishgardian Knight-Dragoons rule the skies, Limsan spearfishers rule the seas

Actually, if you start digging deeper into the dragoon lore, especially doing some of the Moogle Tribe Quests, you learn that the orginal dragoons were not actually created to slay dragons... but to fight along side of them. They were dragon riders, as is the typical lore of dragoons in most other fantasy. They even had special saddles they used with their dragon companions, and there are ruins that still stand in Coerthas that were designated landing and barrack sites for dragoon/dragon pairs.
This makes things with Estinien even more interesting later in the game when you realize he is the first dragoon in thousands of years to go back to their original roots when he becomes close to Virshan and his reconciliation with Nidhogg.

With the jokes about being the floor tank, and the backward swan dives off of elevated platform arenas, I could avoid all that if I just played a little bit here and a little bit there, nothing long-term mind you. I told myself I could stop any time I wanted. And I meant it. But, the more the DPS queue popped, the deeper down the rabbit hole I went. Just one more dungeon, the queue was fast. Just one more. Maybe just one more. Then it became a habit turned into obsession. That shiny blue armor, so shiny, and so blue. No other class could be as spikey as me. The spikey IS me. I AM the spikey. The spikey and I have become one. The lance...oh...hey...umm...ahem... Yeah. I play Dragoon. It's kind of cool.

So did Early Garleans stumble upon a working voidgate? Cause I can't think of a way they could have contacted the void sent otherwise. Modern magitech is well, modern. Within the last century or so, baring lucky finds of Alagan ruins...
This also brings into question the whole 'Garleans are descended from Gulg' thing. Between Gulg and modern Garlemald, there were reapers. ... actually I could see the first Reapers getting hold of auracite now that I'm thinking on it. Speculation ho!

Honestly, I don't mind when a DPS job is simple. I'm the kind of player who tries to play as many jobs as I possibly can and trying to memorize any complex combos to execute just one attack can get to be a bit much when I'm not mainning that job specifically. Even more so if I constantly have to bounce back-and-forth between roles and having to memorize the attack patterns of endgame bosses. So, I never understand why some players complain so much when a job is simple in it's playstyle. Maybe they only ever play a few jobs and don't bother with the others?

ARR: Archer (NOT BARD) will get you a handful of comments, but the moment you become a Bard it will stop. So you are looking in the under 30 content for this one.
ARR: Warrior will get you comments all the way up to Ishguard, even everyone's favorite elven bud Haurchefant comments on you being a 'force of nature like a beast' in combat but only if you have War leveled. So 30+ content for this one.
HW: Dragoon will get you the special comments here.
HW: Paladin will get you comments at points but they are far fewer than if you have Drg leveled. Most comments will come from the Temple Knights and Priests. Remember that Paladin is fueled by Halone, the Fury, which is also Ishguard's primary deity.
SB: Samurai and Ninja will get you comment in Doma and Kugane. Sam will get mentioned decently in Kugane and in and around the towns. Ninja gets you comments in the Doma HQ and with some side quests more than the MSQ.
SB: Warrior will get special mentions on the Steppe from the tribes.
SB: Monk and Red Mage will get you special comments in Ala Mhigo, though RM will only get you very small mention compared to Mnk.
ShB: Dark Knight will get you quite a number of comments here. Even the Exarc comments on how well the title of WoD fits you these days.
EW: Paladin will get you comments everywhere but Sharlayan.
EW: Sage will net you comments in Sharlayan.
EW: Reaper will get you a comment or two from Garlemald and of course from Zero.
Reaper has the least recognition. Every single Halloween event has commented about Black Mages. Little Ladies has commented about Dancer, and Christmas comments about Paladin most times.
They have hidden a bunch in the game that is amazing. It really makes New Game+ worth it.

But I feel like it fits how I see my WOL, I'd totally see her pledging herself to a princess and her beliefs, so I don't mind living into the fantasy more. And it's definitely easier to live more into the ninja fantasy of it once I turned off damage numbers and ability effects.

The flavor for the melee DPS jobs is pretty nice and mostly centric on one thing : overwhelming power to slay your enemies. Monks figured out that your best weapon is your body and honed it to the point they can stand toe to toe with magical superweapons by *punching* them to death, Dragoon mastered aerial combat and, for the WoL, made it work for taking out more than just dragons, Ninjas are intended to eliminate threats quickly and efficiently through subterfuge and their ninjutsu, Samurais basically exercise the art of single-stroke elimination of their enemies while Reapers were basically a mean for a kind of people to use magic-like abilities while becoming ruthless assassins.
You want something dead and don't mind the mess most of the time? Call in a melee DPS.
P.S. : Enlightment for Monks... is kind of their ranged attack... otherwise, Thunderclap is their ranged attack... it just happens they are the payload! 😄

I've struggled to truly get into and commit to any of the melee classes. They all of something appealing. But they all of something going against it. For me, this reasons are:
Dragoon - the amount of buttons, rotation, and inevitable suicide
Monk - the mechanic doesn't do much for me, and all the confusing combos are a bit much for me.
Samurai - hard to remember the skill names, and haven't wanted to commit to memorizing them, lol
Ninja - similar to samurai, a lot of the names of the skill being japanese makes it hard to remember what's what. But, it's probably my favourite of the melee dps classes though.
Reaper: The Warrior of Light using the power of darkness and death just feels wrong to me, so I honestly haven't even started the class yet. I hear it's fun though!
I mainly play ranged DPS, magic DPS, and healer classes, so maybe just close range combat doesn't do it for me either. Lol.
