Its probably because Holostars was Yagoo’s personal project. Hololive was arguably Sora’s project that Yagoo helped in managing and coming to fruition while Holostars is truly his own. At least that’s what I think… he fought tooth and nail for the boys to stay afloat when (I’m presuming this and its my own observation) the other exec’s in Cover were opting to focus solely on Hololive since it was more successful.
Did Yagoo really backdash cancel out of a "sou da ne" and go for another "sou desu ne". Such amazing character mastery on display. I respect Astel pushing for more of a Holostar oriented answer out of their CEO, sometimes your need to not be a bother wins out against decisions like that.
I wanted to add to your description as well. Just like you said, Holostars themselves are very aware that some of those who watch hololive also watches them. While I understand why Yagoo wanted an all male focused group to target an audience that Hololive probably wasn't aimed at, I think it doesn't matter anymore at this point. It's pretty well clear that Holostars attracts all kinds of ages. Despite the difficulties along the way, Holostars has made strides in the JP vtuber community as a whole leaving their historical mark for such a small group. Some may think that it's just because Holostars is listed under Hololive Production now so it's an advantage to them as a "hololive brand" but many also don't know that Holostars had to survive on their own (before and even after the merge into HoloPro). Holostars was so separated at a time that it really pushed them to go beyond their comfort zones and hence why Holostars now has some of the most amazing connections and networking that I thought only those with a huge following and household names could only get. I was proven wrong time and time again by Holostars that no matter how small or how many times you lose your grip, no matter how much support you get from others uplifting you, only you can answer for yourself.
only newcomer would think that holostars got their success just because they are under hololive production, holostars is really start on their own and i honestly think its good idea they were make them separate group otherwise ppl would definitely call holostars leeching hololive name if they mix them from the beginning

i remember when miyabi the 1st holostar debut like having hard time and like because alot of hate like people thinking hololive only girls only, why it appear boys now of all time. so miyabi also got like alot of dislike which makes him also having hard time sleep and even like no appetite at all. at least yagoo still support them when they feel really down

Tbh as someone who's nearing his 30s i find holostars very much more enjoyable than i would've 10 years ago when the only thing in my mind were girls lol so I'd assume it would be much harder to try targeting the younger audience. Also as the option for male vtubers are kinda limited right now since i barely understand any japanese so I'm mostly just watching translated clips than supporting the guys directly.
This was one of - if not my favorite - Wachastars. Even from the warm atmosphere let alone the Real Talk, I couldn't help but feel like it was coming home. Yagoo was all smiles, too. To add to your description, from a company standpoint it only makes sense to start a new group if you're going to try covering different audiences. You'll want to look for what Holostars can do that Hololive can't do, finding different people. Otherwise you're just stepping on the others' toes too much. It's not that there isn't any overlap of your audience - there definitely is, and as you note the boys are already aware of it - but your focus won't necessarily be on that overlap. I think that's why the Sora comparison applies so much, since she was trekking new ground. Same with Holostars. They're the first(?) all-boy idol Vtuber group doing this and so-far the most successful. I really enjoy their cross-gender collabs and hope they keep on coming, don't get me wrong, but their focus is still as an all-boy group. Felt that very strongly from their discussion with Yagoo, how they want to do their own thing. Carve their own path. With more members coming, my hope is that they keep developing more connections and dynamics within the group as well. While keeping the outside connections and relationships alive that helped people come to know them. Separate is OK for me because they're a boy group and girl group with their own interests and ambitions. I just hope - won't expect - but hope one day the girls can happily acknowledge Holostars, with or without a collab. Towa openly promoted and congratulated the new Holostars Gen on Twitter today... stuff like is ultimately where I hope HoloPro as a whole might get to one day. You're from the same company, man. Celebrate each other's successes.
Yagoo brought up an interesting point here. Since at the time, there's a huge unknown market for Male Vtubers. So they knew that what they did with Hololive (the girls) might not work with Holostars. That might explain why the Holostars channel has more variety compared to the main Hololive channel. In the Holostars channel, instead of focusing on the talents. They introduce guests and have the talents interview them and try to learn from them as well. Now, with how much Holostars are put in the spotlight. I hope they found their formula. Especially now that Niji has proven that Male Vtubers can also be successful.

That and the management issue, which persisted for a long time after their debut. They just weren’t given enough support. The boys are great, deserve so much love, and I hope they can figure out how to market them. Especially with the EN holostars coming out.

Holo main channel is usually very good with adding English and even Indonesian and Spanish subs to many of their vids so it was rather disappointing that none of the clearly pre-recorded JP segments leading up to the festival were subtitled.
Holostar and Holo ID gen 1 are struggling so much. Not to mention Holo EN gen 1. They are thrown into such a vast open ocean with waves, struggling with Japanese Idol's culture and stuff while learning so much ASAP. I remember the Holo ID getting bashed just because they collabs with JP senpai, I remember Ina said that the most subs she can gain are probably just 100k, I remember some fans mad just because of Fubuki and Matsuri collab with Holostar members. They, each of them go through some and maybe more in the future, but they are great, every single one of them is a hardworking person and has a great personality! They all deserved all the greatness, the success, and much more happiness they will get in the future!
Just a correction in your description, Astel said it himself in an apex collab with pakael and reid that he has 60% percentage of female audience. While also hinting/assuming that izuru, shien, and rikka may have bigger female audience. As for roberu, i can't confirm since i watch astel 95% of the time.
I think there was a mention that Roberu's demo can swing based on the time he streams. One of this normal streams tend to favor older women who listen's to his show like it's a radio show. I don't know how he came across that kind of stats or how I found that out either.

I can’t say what it is now, but last year it used to be 70%-80% male to 20%-30% female viewers for Roberu
