727's were like fighter jets. On takeoff you could feel the power as you were sucked into your seat. The engines were loud and had that crackling power sound. Honestly the glory days of jet travel, it's all quiet and boring now.

It is my most beautiful airplane. But the must uncomfortable. Chairs are too close from each other. Seat dont go back too much. It's too noisy from inside too. But is my baby
@@0779risingsun Dear friend the comfort and distribution of seats depends on the airline's options. The arrangement of internal space, within certain limits, is not part of the aircraft design itself. In a low fare company, even a B747 can be uncomfortable.
My first jet. I was a straight-wing Turbo-Prop driver when hired at Brand X. Most junior maggot in my class and yet I was awarded the right seat of the 727. The 27 was a GREAT place to work and very rewarding to fly. Completely different from today's big fan jets. It still gives me a chub.
About ten years ago when I was living in TPA i saw an Eastern 727 sitting at the end of the runway near the maintenance centre. How sad and lonely she looked. I wanted to run over and give her a big hug. Love the Whisperjet.
Agree re: the sound; dare none call it noise! That high-pitched whine sounds almost innocent compared to the low, throaty drones of today's jets. As complex as it was, it was a simpler sound, for simpler times. At the other end of the spectrum, or should I say cabin, takeoffs were practically noiseless up in First. I always sought them out when they were flying, flew them into the '90s, and am always on the lookout for them today.
love the loud thundering exhaust of the old jets. back 30 years ago on a quiet day, you could still hear these old bird's thunder 20 miles downrange from you. Nowadays, even the jumbos are silent before they are even out of sight. Sound control has made incredible advancements since then. Still miss the thunder sometimes...
25 years ago, I used to love watching very close up, the takeoffs of 727s from Reagan National airport in the US. In the summer when the winds on the East Coast come prevailingly out of the southwest, Planes at Reagan National takeoff towards the south and in a public park right at the foot of the runway, the jets are very close. Maybe just 150 yards away. All I can say is the jet blast noise from a fully spooled up 727 sounds just like the afterburner of an F15 complete with the supersonic "crackle noise" that you can feel in your chest. Seriously miss the days of the 727.
As you say. For me, the 727's P&W-JT8D's "crackling noise" not only vibrated my chest but put a lump into my throat when as a teen I stood immediately behind them in the old days when a low pre war fence was all that divided us as they took every inch to go up the fifty feet rise that was R35 (Melbourne Essendon Vic Australia) just 5500 feet. ps. R35 is still in (restricted) use but now the fence is replaced by a 24 lane sunken freeway & the runway threshold has been displaced by about 100 metres. Still. I love the Boeing 727 -100 and later 200 more than any other airliner ever built and their record of safety and reliability attests to this.
The 727 is one of my all time favorite planes. I have flown on two of them many years ago with Alaska Airlines going hither and tither to/from Alaska. The 727 has such beautiful lines, very pretty !!
It’s my favorite commercial plane. Probably because I remember as a youngster I would stand at the airport perimeter fingers clinging to the fence right behind runway 19 at the Wichita Municipal Airport watching the 727 taxiing toward the runway. Seconds after turning to lineup I got blasted by the exhaust as the three engines starting from that high pitch scream to loud rumble. The smell of burn jet fuel coming through my nose and the pounding vibration in my chest left my heart beating loudly as the jet raced down the runway then lifted up into the sky. My eyes stuck to the jet until it was nothing but a dot against the sky. The pounding in my chest was no longer coming from the 3 JT8D’s but rather my heart beating. If only I had an IMAX camera and mics then. I’d love to go back in time to experience that once again! At least I have the memory few will get to experience. Now days if you get to close to a fence you can most likely expect a visit from airport police.

That is an Re Engined B727-200 srs by "VALSAN" LH and RH engines are JT8D-200 srs ( MD80 ) engines. Center/tail engine is original. There is some 25% xa thrust in each -200srs engine, and some 25% less fuel consumption. Really nice conversion :)

0:25 That is one of the most beautiful paint-jobs I've seen on an aircraft. It's the kind of livery that makes the plane seem longer. The exact opposite is true for Virgin Atlantic's livery, it makes their 747s seem shorter.
Hats of to you for a great video! I spent 7 years flying the three holer and really enjoyed it. It was noisy in the cockpit but it was really fast. The 727-232's I flew weren't as well hung (note the newer engines in the two pod positions) but due to the well engineered wing were much faster than current airline transports. Vne of 400 kts and Mmo of .9 (I think)! I'm sure the pilot enjoyed putting the 72 through her paces.
About 15 years ago I worked at DFW on the grounds crew. We had two of these that were charter jets. My favorite plane to watch take off. The sound of those old engines just made me smile.
Back in 1999 while working as a ramp agent for Integrated Airline Services at KIAH, we'd see AA's 727-200's taking off a short distance from where we worked (they were one of the few commercial airlines still using the 727-200's at the time). Couldn't help but notice that aircraft was significantly much louder during take off than the other aircrafts we'd observed; plus those 727's normally used more length of the runway to get airborne. One of our clients (Kitty Hawk) used their 727-200's most mornings when they came in (our company handled mostly cargo airlines as well as passenger aircrafts).
These are truly one of the b est looking aircraft ever made. And very solid. I miss flying in them. You actually felt very safe in them! All that power and robust build.

Used to watch the 727 operated by ANSETT AIRLINES take off and land at Essendon Airport at Melbourne, Australia in the late 1960s. Their competitor was TRANS AUSTRALIA AIRWAYS who used a fleet of DC9s. A different sound to the 727.
These 727 videos don’t do it justice. I loved those dirty girls. In real life it was so much more powerful hearing them take off. I used to stand at the end of the runway in Montego Bay, Jamaica, when they would take off (in the 1990s) and the thrust from all three of those engines pointed at the same spot is unparalleled by the newer, 2 engine aircraft, even though the engines on the newer aircraft are more powerful. Also, back in the 80s when the 727 and 737-200 aircraft were the haul horses of the industry, touring the monuments, esp the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington, DC, gave you a great view of these planes as they landed and took off from Reagan National. It was so loud there too because of how loud those planes were upon takeoff. Most people believe it’s much better now that the newer aircraft are much quieter. But I miss these older aircraft ... and the noise!
Thanks for your nice video. Flew this magnificent bird many times in the 80's, and even got to fly what I consider its Russian cousin, the Tupolev Tu-154 in 1988. It was Polish LOT airways, it was VERY LOUD, and had what I remember a very steep fast ascent, and fast cruise speed. Was so surreal in many ways. Oh forgot, my last 727 flight was in 2010, SLC to DET... God was it amazing to look into the cockpit, and see so much old-school going on.
I wish we still kept this fantastic jet for passenger use. And just updated it's engines because it was one of THE BEST jets alongside the 747 that Boeing put out.
One sad truth: So very few children being born today or later will never see a 727 in person. And the odds of anyone under 20 ever having flown on a 727 flight is minuscule. Being 50 years old, I consider myself fortunate to have seen the heyday of this marvelous aircraft. I feel privileged to have boarded many 727's with Delta, American Airlines, United, Northwest, and Piedmont.

I have flown in almost every aircraft in public transport that was built since the 1960's. No other civilian aircraft pulls you back in your seat like a 727. Some may say it was overpowered, but if you ever flew in the tropics in summer, you know that power is a must. Until the modern Era of cheap, quiet, and profitable I had never heard of an aircraft being knocked out of the sky in the ITCZ. In the Era of the 727, it had the power to plow through and the ruggedness to do it in one piece. The last time I flew in an A380 over the north Atlantic I thought to myself, this is actually making me worry. When you know what you are looking at and understand what you are seeing through experienced eyes, and it makes you nervous, well. That was the last A380 I'll ever get on. Things like feeling the floor flex at 10° angle of attack or a 25° bank. Seeing the fuselage longitudal oscillating in turbulence. Feeling rivet friction through the seat frame. Seeing the engine flame out twice mid flight. Seeing a fuel dump 2 hours before landing without a course deviation. Watching the on board camera and seeing how much the tail/rudder assembly yaw flexes when rudder is applied. Seeing how much flexion is designed in as acceptable in the wings. Seeing a side door vibrate at cruising speed. And the crowning event that guarantees I'll never do that again was a pretty sudden descent to 8000 feet from FL 380....just past Gander! And no little yellow masks came down and we didn't climb above FL 100 before landing at JFK. We were told it was to avoid weather and turbulent air. To this day I don't know what exactly went wrong, but right before we began the descent everybody's ears popped hard. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we lost cabin pressure at least partially. And I believe the oxygen masks malfunctioned. I just do not trust anything airbus builds after that personally. I fly Boeing or I take the boat. I'm not dogging on airbus, but even when the C-130 I was on had an engine fire mid flight I wasn't half as scared as that trip on the a380.
The Super 27 was/is a modified version of the 727. Number 1 & 3 engines were replaced with more modern JT8D-217 engines and the number 2 engine was fitted with a hush kit. To the best of my knowledge, this version meets stage III noise standards. The newer JT8D's are more powerful and more efficient. Hope this helps!! bz
I remember they used to have a few UPS 727's at the airport near by. I was always so in love with the look of that aircraft, it's been my favorite ever since. I never got to see one take off though, mainly because they would depart around 10 pm and I was very little so I wasn't out that late. I hear that there is still some 727 flights at another airport in this state, might have to take a trip to see one of them in flight.
Compared to a turbojet, and/or a plane with jets mounted on the wings they did. It's much quieter having the engines mounted way back there (at least for those inside the front half of the plane). Not long before this most planes had turbojets, and even those which had turbofans had FOUR of them, not three, and everyone sitting behind the wing was exposed to the exhaust noise, and everyone ahead of the wing was closer to the compressor noise. In a trijet, noone in exposed to the exhaust, and only those in the rear are close to the compressors. Although they are also exposed to more vibration. The 737 wasn't any louder than other typical jet liners of the day.

my ex-wife and I were aboard an Eastern Airlines 727 many years ago when suddenly there was a loud "BOOM" from the rear of the aircraft. Captain came on the cabin speakers moments later and explained we had lot the number two (center) engine, but not to worry, the plane was perfectly capable of flying on just one engine and we still had two. We continued on to the planned destination and landed without incident.
It's been re engined, it's a real hot rod. The 1 & 3 engines are P &W JT8D 217 from MD 80, 20,000 lbs thrust each. Has more effective thrust reversers. A strong rugged aircraft & still very fast by today's standards. More action here : "LAS Boeing 727-200F Super 27"

It is a Super 27. JT8 -200 engines for the MD80 on 1 and 3 and original JT8D -15 or 17 in the middle
Obviously upgraded with larger & thus more thrust outboard engines. A true rocket. Long live the mighty Boeing 727.

Some may say it was overpowered, but if you ever flew in the tropics in summer, you know that power is a must. Until the modern Era of cheap, quiet, and profitable I had never heard of an aircraft being knocked out of the sky in the ITCZ. In the Era of the 727, it had the power to plow through and the ruggedness to do it in one piece. The last time I flew in an A380 over the north Atlantic I thought to myself, this is actually making me worry. When you know what you are looking at and understand what you are seeing through experienced eyes, and it makes you nervous, well. That was the last A380 I'll ever get on.
Things like feeling the floor flex at 10° angle of attack or a 25° bank. Seeing the fuselage longitudal oscillating in turbulence. Feeling rivet friction through the seat frame. Seeing the engine flame out twice mid flight. Seeing a fuel dump 2 hours before landing without a course deviation. Watching the on board camera and seeing how much the tail/rudder assembly yaw flexes when rudder is applied. Seeing how much flexion is designed in as acceptable in the wings. Seeing a side door vibrate at cruising speed. And the crowning event that guarantees I'll never do that again was a pretty sudden descent to 8000 feet from FL 380....just past Gander! And no little yellow masks came down and we didn't climb above FL 100 before landing at JFK. We were told it was to avoid weather and turbulent air. To this day I don't know what exactly went wrong, but right before we began the descent everybody's ears popped hard. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we lost cabin pressure at least partially. And I believe the oxygen masks malfunctioned. I just do not trust anything airbus builds after that personally. I fly Boeing or I take the boat. I'm not dogging on airbus, but even when the C-130 I was on had an engine fire mid flight I wasn't half as scared as that trip on the a380.
If they are so terrible and dangerous, then why don't they crash more often than Boeings?

This appears to be a Super-27. Very fast, powerful aircraft!!
The Super 27 was/is a modified version of the 727. Number 1 & 3 engines were replaced with more modern JT8D-217 engines and the number 2 engine was fitted with a hush kit. To the best of my knowledge, this version meets stage III noise standards. The newer JT8D's are more powerful and more efficient. Hope this helps!! bz
Yeah, number 1 & 3 engines are bigger than the originals, and are fitted with "shell" reversers.
From what I understand, this plane hauls ass!! And is almost scary on take off!!
I remember they used to have a few UPS 727's at the airport near by. I was always so in love with the look of that aircraft, it's been my favorite ever since. I never got to see one take off though, mainly because they would depart around 10 pm and I was very little so I wasn't out that late. I hear that there is still some 727 flights at another airport in this state, might have to take a trip to see one of them in flight.

I used to take 727s all the time to college back in the 1970s. Eastern called them Whisperjets, but they sure didn't whisper!

Compared to a turbojet, and/or a plane with jets mounted on the wings they did. It's much quieter having the engines mounted way back there (at least for those inside the front half of the plane). Not long before this most planes had turbojets, and even those which had turbofans had FOUR of them, not three, and everyone sitting behind the wing was exposed to the exhaust noise, and everyone ahead of the wing was closer to the compressor noise. In a trijet, noone in exposed to the exhaust, and only those in the rear are close to the compressors. Although they are also exposed to more vibration. The 737 wasn't any louder than other typical jet liners of the day.

my ex-wife and I were aboard an Eastern Airlines 727 many years ago when suddenly there was a loud "BOOM" from the rear of the aircraft. Captain came on the cabin speakers moments later and explained we had lot the number two (center) engine, but not to worry, the plane was perfectly capable of flying on just one engine and we still had two. We continued on to the planned destination and landed without incident.

I'm from Sydney. Visited Melbourne for the first time 3 weeks ago. Fell in love with the place.
It's been re engined, it's a real hot rod. The 1 & 3 engines are P &W JT8D 217 from MD 80, 20,000 lbs thrust each. Has more effective thrust reversers. A strong rugged aircraft & still very fast by today's standards. More action here : "LAS Boeing 727-200F Super 27"
I was wondering why the engine intakes nad exhausts were different sizes. I suspected it was a re-engined bird.

Did many aging aircraft inspection and repairs on FedX 27's at Lockheed years ago. Tough old birds.
FedX had a bunch of those planes, but maybe. I gave up planes for trains 21 years ago and have missed working on them ever since.
