The Shotokan karate style is very beautiful, cartesian and precise, nothing left over, nothing is missing, it is perfect.

I must train at the only dojo (GKR )that makes you keep rear foot pointed forward in long/short fighting stance....I get push-ups every time I'm caught with foot at 45 degrees. BTW first comment! :)

This is very simple program, especially as far as jiyu-ippon kumite and kihon are concerned. In all dojos I've been this would qualify for 5-4 kyu at most. For Shodan we required various types of reaction in jiyu-ippon (e.g. sen-no-sen) and uke should have presented various counterattacks, including kicks, throws, etc.

Modern JKA. Technically good but lacks heart, soul and spirit. Not explosive nor dynamic as it used to be. Sad to see this development.

Sen no sen - go no sen - sabake - maii - nage waza . Heute ?

What do u mean technically good?

Ramon A lot of time is spent on details regarding the form, the angles of your extremities, hip vibration, esthetics etc. This is all good but comes at the expense of body conditioning, pressure testing your skills, learning how to actually hit and kick with power on a moving targets, realistic bunkai... In the 70. & 80 we actually put pressure on each other and had the intent to hit the opponent. The training was often scary but it expanded our comfort zone effectively.
      OSs!

@@shoomeni You are right. In my opinion of a bit younger practitioner, JKA never was "traditional" and always have been competition (Shotokai do not have competition and is more self defense oriented) however, as you say in the past at least the training was better.
In my opinion, the first problem is that ALMOST all do not understand the real meaning of Dojo kun hence the students actually finish being good technocally but with lack of most things Karate has.
Then the training and the exams went down and are easier to help more people hop in the JKA wagon.
I think Karate is not for every one and is NOT for children. You can see brown and Shoudan that are children. Is not possible to really understand Dojo kun and be mature at that age to absorb the details and even the base.
Then in the West countries most are somewhat big or tall and finish FAT and lazy.
The training is and WAS focused on kumite and kumite is not self defense is competition; tournaments.
HOWEVER, most of the training is kihon and kata BUT in the end NEVER focus on self defense! we jump to kumite! That is a total error of the Shotokan associations.
For me the training should be like this:
      -Children only up to 5kyu.
      -Teenagers only up to 1kyu
-All the same training (but a bit harder like in the Japan Universities, that is harder than in the dojo incredibly)
up to 4kyu to try to get the base right (but not to do that in a few months; this would take some years to reach this grade)
-4kyu: start to use Makiwara intensively (in most places they do not use makiwara...) and pads to teach focus and movement.
      Start with plenty of shadowing/bunkai
-1kyu: start with heavy cardiovascular training.
-Shoudan: add the heavy bag and hojo undo to develop strength and power
-Nidan: more time into training and a heavy revision of all the basics only by experts from Japan.

TheReverb1 you seem to have your facts straight. May I ask what part of the world you have gained your karate experience from?
