    Koh-I-noor hardtmouth do a 24 set of watercolour leads, with holder in tin case which is phenomenal. They blend, and are surprisingly durable. The nice thing about them is you can purchase the leads by colour.

    • @katalinelo8011
      @katalinelo8011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Koh-i-Noor had similar things also for a long time just with less colour options. But it is interesting that they have it now also with watercolor pencils... I may try to find some if traveling will be possible again and I can visit a proper shop in Czech Republic 😊 thanks for the tip!

      @@katalinelo8011 I love mine, my son bought them as a birthday gift for me. They work well, but I do admit to having a bit of a bias toward the product. They are affordable, the pigment pay out is good and they are versatile. If you go to Czech you may find an even greater range? Have you tried their wood less coloured pencils? They come in a durable case that is great for on the go also

    • @katalinelo8011

      @@juliehowman3912 yes, I have the Progresso woodless colored pencils and I love them. Especially for larger areas. I had them as a kid and as I came back to art more professionally that was the first thing to get 😂 I have also their artist's coloured pencils, the Polycolour set of 36 (there are more colours available but for me that is big enough), they are great too. And very affordable. I have a bias for Koh-i-Noor products to be honest because I grew up with them (they were the best on the Eastern side of the iron curtain and that didn't change in the 90s when I was a kid).

    • @juliehowman3912
      @juliehowman3912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@katalinelo8011 I fell in love with their product as an adult and am blessed to have built up a full range of their product now. The brand is well worth investing in and if you try it invariably you become a convert. Even their pastal pencils are superior to the Fabre castall ones, and I prefer them also to the derwent ones I also have. Their pencil eraser is also amazing, it is soft but easy to sharpen and use. Sometimes they seem a bit loose as it’s not glued into the pencil shaft, but it does not affect the effective nature of the product.

    • @katalinelo8011
      @katalinelo8011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@juliehowman3912 yes I agree, they have good quality. I think because they still produce in Europe (as far as I know). It was the second big pencil company in Europe (founded 1790 in Vienna) and the first one to manufacture graphite pencils in different hardness. And they maintained their high standards. I use mostly coloured pencils for my art so I can't really tell how their other products are, but I tried some months ago some very old stuff from them and they were still very good.

  • @Llamanescent
    @Llamanescent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I absolutely hate traditional pencils because of the potential for breaking, the amount of waste that sharpening can produce (especially if you're not in a location where it's easy to do things like composting), and the difficulty that some brands present with getting replacements of individual colors - and I've been trying to hunt down mechanical colored pencils for ages, with very little success. Definitely going to be picking these up, thanks so much for introducing me to them!

      These types of "pencils" are popular in asia. I have a similar set I bought from the 100 yen store (= dollar store) in Japan. It's hard to describe all the details briefly, but as Katvalk says they feel a little scratchy hard and a bit more waxy than usual colour pencils. They have a pretty student grade feel, but they work better than my koh-i-nor tritone pencils. I LOVE them for initial light sketching lines, but as Katvalk shows you can push them and do entire drawings with them. I've done a few portraits only using them. I worked in several light layers. Most people would get sore hands or hand cramps if you used them as hard as Katvalk pushes in her drawings here. The leads have never broken on me (they are too hard for that). I own many pencil brands (polychromos, prismacolor, luminance, van gogh, koh-i-noor etc) and I will always select these cheap plastic holder "pencils" for sketching above all others.

    These remind me of the mechanical colored pencils I bought from the dollar store. It has a regular primary set of 4 and pastel set of 4 (each was 1$). Something cool about them is that the cap’s a sharpener for the pencils and it works really well.
    I never thought about using them the way you did in this video ‘cuz I use mine for sketching, but the quality looks almost the same.

      I wish the "quality" pencil makers would think of providing their leads in this format. It seems more environmentally friendly and certainly eliminates the hassle of using a sharpener. The fact you didn't break a lead indicates they are probably more economical than the wooden pencil too. Thank you for such a thorough demonstration.

    My favourite are the uni nano dia leads. They act like graphite, you can use a tortillion to blend and erase, they're opaque, and are extremely versatile. My only complaint is that they're missing a yellow, so I'm getting a yellow pilot eno to fix that. I'm currently on chemo, so messing with a lot of art supplies is kind of difficult, but these leads are just great for that.

    I really like the colours on the third one but the yellow kitty's way too cute and cheerful 🥺
    In theory I feel like mechanical coloured pencils are a good idea but at the same time that's a lot of plastic being used to manufacture them and I don't think they can be recycled very easily either... Maybe some day when science progresses further
    Also have you tried out one of those giant multicoloured crayons? Kasey Golden did a video on one recently and I think you could make something cool with it!

    • @RedesignatedClockwork
      @RedesignatedClockwork 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely feel you on the plastic concern. As long as different types of plastics and metals aren't being bound together in a way that they can't be separated, though, there's nothing stopping mechanical pencil barrels from being recyclable - a lot of inking pen and alcohol marker barrels are recyclable even, they just aren't marked for it.
      The way it is right now, you're running into a lot of potential waste product whether you're using traditional colored pencils or mechanical ones, sadly. :/

      These kinds of "pencils" have been very popular in asia for some time. I bought a similar set of five holders with over 20 different colour refill leads at the 100 yen shop (dollar store) when I lived in Japan. They are really fun for sketching, and as Katvalk shows, they are decent for colouring. I've done a few entire portraits using only these pencils - as Katvalk mentions they feel a little scratchy hard and waxy (compared to good pencil brands) if you go in hard/burnish but they perform surprisingly well. I had something similar as a kid. Found at my grandparent's place, so it was probably from the 70s to 80s... Not so fancy like these, with a hexagonal metal barrel (and only yellow, red, blue, green, brown and black). At that time there were also in the same shape normal graphites (I think you still can get those). The cap of the pencil had the sharpener to the lead if you didn't want to use sandpaper. It's funny to see that it comes back again 😂 just fancier.

    This reminds me of mechanical colour pencils Studio by Koh-i-noor(potreby-kancelarske.eu/pastelky-4012-12-studio-scala.htm), only those have normal (and more) colours (yours look rather bright (though you seem to like it this way)). They have a little bit different mechanism (if that's the right word for it) and comes with sharpener so you can make sharp point at the end. I used to have them when I was a kid and like dto draw with them because they didn't need sharpening... Actually, I still have them somewhere :D though some of them (black one in particular) are almost all used up. :) (can't tell if they would be considered good quality though, it's really long ago since I used them last time and e.g. I never tried blending at the time)

    I really like the concept but not the quality of the Zebra pencils. The pilot pencils are great for sketching and they have a refill sort that is less brittle. Uni makes pencils like these too, their lead is kind of softer and leaves more pigment behind and are easier to erase. And all of them are an absolute pain to import. DX

      Which particular ones are you referring to? I'm curious to try to get them.

      @@lacreshaflowers5421 At the time I had to resort to Etsy and Jetpens to get any of them and pay a toll but now I see markersnpens has the 0.7 Pilot ones + refills. It's the original lead tho so it is very brittle to me. But I press hard due to shakey hands. Might work great for someone who doesn't.

    Why are we even still using wood for pencils in 2021? LOL

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because the alternatives all involve some kind of plastic? Whether that's in the form of cases to mechanical pencils like these or whether it is to make a durable cover/label for woodless pencils. At least wood is sustainable.

      @@Littlewings1211 I still think they could make it sustainable if they /wanted/ to. About plastic... Plastic is bad, but we still use it for pens, and everyone seems okay with it :c

    Oh it’s not even a lead holder 2mm style?? Usually the ones i have you click and it completely lets you slide the led to the length you want and you have a special sharpener to make the lead to a point, but this is a lead pencil style 2mm intersting, 2mm i believe is identical size to normal wodden pencil lead, i think it’d be better to buy a buncha lead holders and then get colored lead for them, but my experince is colored lead not inside of wood seems to be harder colored lead so they dont break in the lead pencil

    These oils be great for kids. Big barrel, decent color payoff, no sharpening, and lots of refills!
