Now do 10 GB switches for normal people you know less than eight ports or less than $250
    Also 2.5 GB

I bought one from mokerlink and I ended up bricking it trying to update the firmware. Mocha link sent me a brand new switch so they are decent for the budget

There are plenty of those on AliExpress from brands like Horaco and others. I bought an 8-port 10GbE SFP+ switch for 82€ after taxes, and I saw plenty of 6-port (2x SFP+ and 4x 2.5GbE) switches for less than 35€ after taxes.

Can you do a video about hba cards too? its a foreign technology to me even though i would consider myself quite techy

I am (kinda) exploring this with a brand called LinkReal soon - but its hard to discuss as a general subject, as its one of those 'you get what you pay for' subjects in storage. Still, eventually I will finish it!

@@nascompares I'm looking forward to watching your video on link real.
Somethings I'm not familiar with on hba cards are the different ports and wires, how to find compatible cards and wires, how do they do the advertised 1000+ hdds and 30+ nvmes, can i do half nvme and half hdd.
It's a lot of simple stuff but with a potentially very expensive purchase it's the little things that add up and make concerns.
Hopefully my insight as a clueless and lost consumer will help you find things to talk about if you ever end up making a dedicated video.

Always make sure to have a simple usb to rj45 dongle just in case windows setup doesn't recognize the wifi. It saved me days.

Windows not recognizing your network in setup is a plus nowadays. No workarounds to skip MS account setup.

Man I'd love a multi-NvMe DAS' that uses the USB4 / TB4 connections as well as have options for adding 10GBe/25GBe/etc., so we could use low cost 2TB NvMe GEN4's or better to create RAID 0/1 systems for huge video edits. Making it without networking media connections optional would be 👍.
C'mon ASUSTOR what are you waiting for?

Cable Matters 2.5gbe model 202095 is plug and play on Qnap.

5x Ugreen 2.5gb ethernet adapters (USB A and C) working on DS918+, MacBook Pro, 2x Beelink Mini Pcs, and an old as a Witch's dried up nipple PC. At less than 20€ a pop on that big river site, no complaints so far.

Buying 2.5Gb USB dongle is a smart move because they work substantially better than simple 1Gb ones

I thought I'd be a hacker and get 10 Gbit routing through USB adapters. I have a mini-PC server that has enough headroom to add that functionality with lots of high-speed IO. But then I realised USB to ethernet only goes to 2.5 Gbit. Still an upgrade, and probably sufficient, but eh, less shiny.

About ALI, there are 2.5G USB adapters that initially mount as CDROM drive and give you access to an installer for the drivers.
Avoid those (vendors usually make it easy to spot them) as the driver is outdated and with it the speed is capped at around 1.77Gb/s.

My kingdom for an affordable USB 4 to SFP+ adapter! Why are they nowhere to be found? It’s less components than the ones with a twisted pair PHY included!

Eventually I’m sure.. quite a lot of power draw AND heat for those though - make it tough to build into a portable dongle style device IMO

It would have been helpful if you supplied compatibility information for the adapters. On another youtube channel I heard that newer chips may not be supported on specific (linux) kernels

10G is the current bottleneck with high speed NVMe it's just getting too slow 25G/50G/100G should be norm. Prices need to come down.

    • @kf4hqf2
      @kf4hqf2 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Sadly that's just not how economics works. There has to be sufficient demand for those higher bandwidth network devices, and right now, there simply isn't. Particularly outside the data center world. The vast majority of home (even home lab) users are hard pressed to justify greater than 10G bandwidth on their network. Heck, most of the mid-size business I've worked with still use 1G switches. It will be a long time before 100G becomes the "norm". We will likely see 10G become more common for desktop/home devices over the next few years, but that's about it.

@@kf4hqf2 I was looking to buy a wifi7 router. After looking at the prices of them I said screw it and ordered a QNAP 4 port 100G 8 port 25G switch. Almost the same price as a router. I use a wired connection more often anyways and 25G NIC's are pretty cheap second hand on eBay, Around 25$. Then later I can switch to 100G for NAS or 2019 Mac Pro I'm still using.

3x 40/56Gbit Mellanox cards plus 2 QSFP+ cables cost me like $150 for small setup and now NVMe Gen3 are my bottlenecks… then it connects to rest of my devices by 2.5/10Gbit NICs/switches.

I don’t use NAS operating systems and prefer pure Linux distros. Recently got the 2.5gbe usb adapter from u-green and although the device claims to be connected at 2500 actual transfers never go above 100mbps. I’m not adding out of tree drives to the kernel so I just put it away.
