I'm not all smart with tractors. Am only 15 but I like learning new things about anything with wheels. I'm even working on my first truck at the moment. Great video. I like your attitude. Not a lot of people have a nice attitude.
I have a little Cub Cadet 32HP tractor, and despite the different brands, I really appreciate your taking the time to walk through some of the principles. I am a hobby farmer, and just barely getting started. ANY good information is deeply valued.
Josh, I don’t even have a John Deere tractor but I still watch your vids because your gd and most machines are similar. You give tips that can be used on anything. Thx for all your vids
Josh, I have the 5075e which I believe is the same process for the 55,65, and 75 models. You wisely mention to keep a maintenance log. If you look on page 140-1 through 140-6 of your operator's manual, they have maintenance logs all charted out for you to fill in. You can then write notes on the bottoms of the pages for tools and such.
Nice quick video. 2 comments. 1 keep a couple flattened cardboard boxes by your work station. Toss under tractor/truck/car/utv/even mower. Easy clean up, catches spills/dirt/misc, and more comfortable to lie on. 2 - Fram tends to be erratic, and they go into bypass too often/early, and filter media substandard. Use K&N, Wix, Napa Gold for best quality. K&N have a nice weldnut you can use socket on. I use K&N even on my Briggs/Kawasaki/Honda twins/ohc/etc. Jimho ymmv. Max
Hi josh, Thank you for taking the time to post your video and doing so without being a *ic* . I have to say that your “shade tree’ mechanic video are my favorite. In this age of instant gratification and loss of common man (woman) knowledge it is refreshing to see a person doing a basic tune up on their equipment. Two week ago we had my wife’s car in the shop for a decal and as always they found plenty other thing to do on the car which I promptly declined, not without get a full on quote. My son was dubious on why I did not got the work done there. I then proceeded to the nearest auto part store and gathered the needed part. ( a few item needed to be fixed to be fair with that shop). My 3rd trader then spent an hour or two with me wrenching around, swapping air filters , oil changing, wind shield wipers wrestling, before declaring victory ... Once done and said I got him to compare the price of the goods we bought to the shops quote, gave him my hourly wage and got him to figure out how much we saved, and many hour I would have had to work to pay to get it done ... hopefully some first hand math will give him a lifelong lessons .... once all of that was done and said we took the car for a test drive that just happened to pass by the local ice cream shop ... after all we had quite a bit of saved money to spend .... Keep up the great work josh
Hi Josh I’ve just serviced my 45hp tractor. Its great when you do it yourself. Then you know it’s done right. To make life easier when greasing the tractor and loader I bought an compressed air grease gun makes it a breeze to do. Woooo
Great Video and like your notes on tracking maintenance. I have a 2020 that has been on the farm since 1970 and still is the primary. Your Maintenance will keep it going for a life time.
I’ve got a 2000 year model little JD 790 (30hp) tractor. She’s the 2nd biggest work horse on my horse farm next to the Yamaha 4 wheeler we use at least twice a day for feeding, mucking, manure spreading. Keeping up with the maintenance using all synthetic lubricants, my equipment just keeps on going! Great videos, keep ’em coming……
My 5065E is 10 years old now and just hit 500hrs a while back. I did the same thing you just did but also I changed out the front differential oil. The only problem I have had is my starter finally just went out and was easy and cheap to replace. The guy at the starter repair shop said the starters on these tractors are a tad undersized and will wear out faster over time. If you notice it cranking slow even with a hot battery that’s your problem . I also installed several led flood light cubes around the tractor and it lights up the night! I also replaced my factory headlight bulbs with performance led bulbs.
Have a 2013 3038e (the year before foldbable ROPS arrived :( ) Have to let the air out of the backs to clear our conventional garage. Sucks, but it is what it is. Great video!
Fram is fine iv been turning wrenches 4 years I've been a diesel mechanic pretty much all my life we've used them on race cars tractors semi trucks just about any and everything and never had a problem with him so don't listen to all the haters good look
Being a know it all tractor operator lol! I love the John Deere it is reliable mine is older no computer stuff on it Its a b210 backhoe. made quick detach forks mounted on the front bucket . I have a enclosed cab with AC keep me comfy in inclement weather. Might be a good idea to get tools so you can repack the cylinders when they leak saves a ton of money doing the repairs yourself. Love that cushion need to buy one. You make fun and pretty good videos without being a smartass. Keep on going.
Tip: Get two permanent markers in your toolbox. One white or silver, another black. Those two contrasting colors, most probably will fit the entire spectrum of needs! It will allow you to mark each and every component for which you need to remember some information. Like when it was changed, etc. A simple date scribed on your filters will save you a lot of head scratching and wondering about when to do maintenance and such! The information is readily available exactly where its needed. ;-) I just recently took advantage of that method. While getting back on track a tractor that had been "abandoned" for the past 2 years... All necessary parts where properly marked with date and any additional information I needed! ;-)
I have the same tractor, same loader, even the same quick connect. Only difference is mine is a 2017 and has a cab. A previous video you did on the 5065e is actually how I found your channel to start with. I tagged you in a photo on Instagram with pics of the service intervals in case you don't have the manual.
Consider slipping flexible rubber tube or surgical hose over the oil wrench jaws to offer padding for fuel filter collar removal. It grips but won't mar the collar. I use scrap fuel line for my wrench. Being new to tractor ownership, I find all your videos beneficial in the use and upkeep of my JD 3038E. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
As a mechanic I try not to chime in a whole lot but do your research on fram you would be surprised how bad they are. I don't know if they make it for tractors but I STRONGLY suggest Wix filters.
That's what I like about my TROY BILT PONY tractor it has a safe trip on it the only way it will run is you have to be sitting on the seat for it to run
Oh yeah labelling stuff. I was cheeky and borrowed my daughters little hand print labelling machine. And labelled all the filters etc with hrs fitted and date. A bit ott but helps me.
Napa filters are made by wix, Donaldson is another good choice. Can't go wrong with oe filters either, probably better pricing if you buy by the case. Copper washers should also get replaced periodically. Fuel filter is easier to prime if you partially fill beforehand. Napa sells a nice large red funnel, kind of looks like a fireman hat, works really well if using 5 gallon pails of oil, as it has a notch to hold the pail. Regular grease and oil keeps them running forever. By chance does that engine use a coolant filter? If so, good to replace every year or two.
Maintenance is key Josh my advice is to change your air filters more often my inner one is every other year but outer along with all other filters is every year cheap insurance in my opinion
Hey Josh, the farm is really looking good. Just wanted to tell you about a little gadget that I bought to clean out the radiator. It's called the Radiator Genie. It does a fantastic job. It comes with a water wand and an air wand. I was a little skeptical when I first saw it but after using it last year after bushogging I'm a believer. God bless...
Write on the oil filter AFTER installing it! If the writing end up on a concealed side, it's not of much use, is it? The famous and rare common sense "thing"! LOL 😂
As far as synthetic oil causing leaks it will usually only cause leaks in very old worn-out engines that have only ever used Dino oil due to the fact that Dino oil will plug up any cracked seals with sludge and full synthetic is very good at cleaning that sludge away which in turn causes leaks very early on in the synthetic game when they first came out with synthetic oil many of the companies were having problems with the additive packages in the oil which was actually destroying and eating seals which I think is where the whole don't go to synthetic comes from.
Hey Josh, a quick youtube search for fram vs. wix will get you tons of videos of the problems with fram filters. There is one guy that cuts em open while working at the back of his huge flatbed service truck(thats the only description I can think of for you to find the video).. Other than the cheap components in a fram filter the main complaint most have is how few pleats are in the filter material. This guy went a step futher and unrolled and stretched out the paper filter material,,,Don't recall the measurements but the fram filter has way less material. To answer your question about synthetic oil, yes every single engine I own that called for regular oil and a while later I switched to synthetic, they now have oil leaks (I have no idea why). I have two generators that have never leaked a drop one of them(10 hp) had 200 hours on it and the 16 hp had less than 20. Both started leaking from the main seals after 10-20 hours of running with synthetic. weird. Now, anything that calls for synthetic from OEM (3 polaris wheelers and one ranger) have never leaked a drop. From what I've learned after some extensive research online regarding synthetic, if you service your equipment at the recommended service intervals, you do not need to run synthetic and really you're just wasting money. The main advantage to synthetic is if you want to extend your service intervals...most guys that take care of their equipment just can't bring themselves to do that. lol I switched to synthetic on my old 6.5 turbo diesel and the first thing I noticed was how fast the turbo spooled up but man did she start using oil! I noticed when checking the oil while the engine was warm, the full synthetic dripped off the dipstick like water...that concerned me, but it explained the faster spooling. One thing I do that you might find helpful is every vehicle, tractor or any other equipment I own, under the hood I took a paint pen and wrote socket size/# of quarts for the oil changes - I'm getting too old to crawl under vehicles multiple times lol. I also use an engraver to write on the end of the oil filters (for my tractors). I write hrs. and date. Tried the sharpie route but my filters all face out and after 6 months of working them I couldn't read the sharpie writing. Your's may work fine because the end of your filter is kinda protected. Nice video.
Hey stony I use puralator oil filters on my John Deere x300 they are a better oil filter...i also found that k&n air filters work well and I use Lucas grease on my grease fitting I use the green grease by lucas
Quick release oil drain plug are the way to go . Not so much mess, they lock closed, used in large fleets (by me) and just much quicker. Look into them, I think you'll be surprised.
I would go with John Deere oil & filter. We had jd 4230 with over 10,000 hrs and going strong. John Deere says that you can go 500 hrs between changes but we go 300 hrs with they’re oil.
On fuel filters, my old diesel mechanic taught me to fill the filter with a fuel treatment (like diesel kleen) before installing I new filter . Not sure if that helps you.
Napa, wix, Carquest. I think Donaldson makes filters for Deere. The synthetic oil causing leaks is not an old wives tale, but it tends to apply to higher mileage or houred engines.
Good information, well done, like many I used fram for everything. Having said that I stumbled across a video on You Tube by Stephen Cox explaining the difference in filters. He has made a believer out of me. I will no longer be using the orange filter on my equipment.
I'm really against fram filter just because I've seen what's in them. I usually go with original spec filter or better. I finally changed from Deere filters on my 140 hydrostatic to Baldwin after seeing a tear down of their filter. There is simply more filter area than the stock Deere filter.
I did the same research on tractors that you did. I, however, found the Kubota to be the better choice and it worked out well for me. I just recently upgraded from my Kubota M6040 to a new Kubota M5-111 with a cab. Sure wish I would have bought the cab tractor in 2010 when I bought the first one. Glad you're having good luck with the JD but for me I could tell the quality that the JD green paint is supposed to represent wasn't in that Indian made JD. Although I will say that your JD does seem a little easier to service than the Kubota.
Stoney Ridge Farmer so far the missions aren’t a big deal, granted I only have about 58hrs on it and really haven’t done any kind of real work with it but the DEF gauge is still showing full. The A/C and heat make up for the missions. So far at least.
I agree Wix oil filters are the best. And for all you napa guys wix makes "napa" oil filters. Just what iv always used but different strokes for different folks
As a fellow 6ft 5in guy North Carolinian, leg room has been the biggest issue with my Kubota L3901. I really don't need 50+ HP, but is that where I would need to be in order to gain some leg room? Within a reasonable driving distance from my home/farm, I can get pretty much any tractor besides Mahindra. Was this a factor when you choose your 5065e?
Thanks for the very useful videos, well done! I have a question about the 3-pont lift arm, specifically the right one with the handle. Mine over the course of a few hours bladeing or mowing loosens and will fall off dropping the arm (and losing the bloody handle!) It's a cheap hard to crank version anyway, so two questions: 1) how can i prevent this arm from loosening and 2) can I buy an upgraded handle? many thanks in advance. Cheers, Simon
Fantastic video mate. I've watched a lot and most people while having a good go just miss the mark if you know what I mean. One thing I noticed with discribing the air filter system the inner is actually a "safety: filter where as if it has dust on it the outer is holed. Other than that great job, especially like the detailed recording of your servicing routines can't be too through there, I wish my clients were as detailed. Keep up the great work.
Over the past 2 years the fluid has leaked down from leaky cylinders hooked up...busted hoses and such....I've replaced nearly 8 gallons of new hydraulic oil so far in this system. So most of the fluid is new anyhow.
I'm not all smart with tractors. Am only 15 but I like learning new things about anything with wheels. I'm even working on my first truck at the moment. Great video. I like your attitude. Not a lot of people have a nice attitude.

Your tractor vids have a special place in my heart!💘
Lol love it. Gimmie a month or so and the Massey gets a change. The new massey!
Josh, I don’t even have a John Deere tractor but I still watch your vids because your gd and most machines are similar. You give tips that can be used on anything. Thx for all your vids
Loving the video's! Josh you are a very humble and knowledeable guy. Thanks and keep them coming.
Maintenance is one of the most important things someone can teach. Thanks for bringing us along!
Yessir!
Hey josh I’m 15 and I love working on things I mow yards in my neighborhood and I love watching your videos

I need to get a box for all my filters and tools for all my stuff. I definitely like that idea. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for your knowledge, tips and tricks to maintenancing your John Deere Tractor. Your very organized on when to change the filters!
My Father loved the Fram filters. He even sold them after he retired from his job.
There are videos on TH-cam showing how cheap they are made🙌

Good video! Please do the Massey Ferguson next!!! It's time for me to get into mine...I need the knowledge
good service is the life of a tractor and you done the service just right...

Oh, one more thing, there's a grease zerk on the front AND back of the front axle pivot. Good video. I learned some stuff too...... Dan from Montana.
Great Video and like your notes on tracking maintenance. I have a 2020 that has been on the farm since 1970 and still is the primary. Your Maintenance will keep it going for a life time.

Enjoyed the video. Nice organization and reminder tips! Crazy spring for sure. Here in NC foothills was 30s Monday 80s today 50s tomorrow haha

Cool....great info...and you've reminded me I need to change the diff oils in the tractor too! I also need to take it in for valve adjustments
How many hours do do valves?
Have a 2013 3038e (the year before foldbable ROPS arrived :( )
Have to let the air out of the backs to clear our conventional garage. Sucks, but it is what it is.
Great video!
Wix is an awesome filter!
Pat Thompson research
If you tilt the oil jug side says it’ll help to prevent some of the glug and spilling on the floor. Love the vids!
Even though I have a smaller tractor then you do, it makes my life much easier to remove the bucket when I service mine
Fram is fine iv been turning wrenches 4 years I've been a diesel mechanic pretty much all my life we've used them on race cars tractors semi trucks just about any and everything and never had a problem with him so don't listen to all the haters good look
Excellent advice and tutorial. Still looking at tractor's and am leaning towards a cab tractor to do stuff in the cold. wooooh
Good video, if not OEM I go with Napa gold or Hastings on my filters
Being a know it all tractor operator lol! I love the John Deere it is reliable mine is older no computer stuff on it Its a b210 backhoe. made quick detach forks mounted on the front bucket . Love the farm! Love the videos! My dad always taught me to grease after washing to push any water out of bearings..etc that may have gotten in.
I do the same thing, having a lil log book with the size of sockets the filter#s mileage/hours. Definitely helps being organized
That's a great tractor my friend! I have a 5420 with a 541 bucket attach. It's been a great rig besides the fuel issue I fixed with an inline pump.
You do a wonderful job at making your videos . Keep up the good work
I have a 5075E with cab, appreciate your video and thoughts! Doing much of the same as you on our 27 ac, great videos
Thanks T
I use Wix or Napa filters on my truck and my tractor..I also run with Rotella oil
Love my JD 2150. I've had it for years and have yet found a reason to remove the loader. thanks for the maint. info.
Mow 60 acres then you'll have a reason. Seems like a different tractor
I like to use fleetguard or wix filters on my diesel engines. Love your videos!
Filter leaking at 15:42?
Well done sir! I've got some Fram filters if you want them.
I have the same tractor, same loader, even the same quick connect. Only difference is mine is a 2017 and has a cab. A previous video you did on the 5065e is actually how I found your channel to start with. I tagged you in a photo on Instagram with pics of the service intervals in case you don't have the manual.
RockAuto also has the hydraulic Filter: Wix 51740 and it's a perfect fit for my 2014 JD 5065E.

You'll get better with your dip stick the more you do it. Ive done it blind folded once
You know we gotta come out and see you guys! Working on our next road trip plans!
Open invite!!! We would LOVE to have you guys out!! Catron tacos & bon fires!!!
Looks like a nice little tractor thanks for the video 👍
Always sucks when you have "YUCK" in your radiator... ahahaha Good vLog... Always good to see equipment well maintained... Thanks for sharing !
Napa filters are made by wix, Donaldson is another good choice. Can't go wrong with oe filters either, probably better pricing if you buy by the case. Raise the loader up. Makes it easier to get to filter and oil filler cap. Did you have to take off metal guard by oil filter to get it off?
Maintenance is key Josh my advice is to change your air filters more often my inner one is every other year but outer along with all other filters is every year cheap insurance in my opinion
Good stuff enjoyed that, I have a Tractor just like that mine has a grapple with a 3rd function value it’s the way to go when your a 1 man show
More cushion for the push'n?
Plowing?
Bucketing?? I dont know tractor terms...
use a bucket plow 😜
North Country Off grid, lol ! Plowing, yes !!
Hey Josh, the farm is really looking good. Just wanted to tell you about a little gadget that I bought to clean out the radiator. It's called the Radiator Genie. It does a fantastic job. Write on the oil filter before you fill it! Boom!! Knowledge 😉
THE DATE
Write on the oil filter AFTER installing it!

Also a good idea to cut your oil filter apart go with wix
Do you have to bleed hydraulic lines after a hydraulic change we got a 5065e cabed model no arm but we use back hydraulic on it
Self bleeding hydraulics as per the dealer
My buddy had a 67 nova 383 stroker. And when he changed his fram filter the engine tried sucking the filter into the engine
Wix filters are some of the best filters
Hey Josh, a quick youtube search for fram vs. wix will get you tons of videos of the problems with fram filters. My son-in-law really likes his 5065E. I'm partial to my Kioti!
I would go with John Deere oil & filter. We had jd 4230 with over 10,000 hrs and going strong. John Deere says that you can go 500 hrs between changes but we go 300 hrs with they’re oil.
Wix filters are great, next would be Hastings
Awesome job Mr Stoney Ridge.
On fuel filters, my old diesel mechanic taught me to fill the filter with a fuel treatment (like diesel kleen) before installing I new filter . Not sure if that helps you.
Wix filters are a very good unit.
I love your VLoGs! And I’m buying Stoney Ridge merch!!!!👊🏻💪🏻
Right on thanks!
Good video! I’d highly recommend a compressed air hose attachment (air comb) for the radiator, engine, under hood, and air filter cleaning.
Napa, wix, Carquest. I think Donaldson makes filters for Deere. The synthetic oil causing leaks is not an old wives tale, but it tends to apply to higher mileage or houred engines.
Thanks for the farm vlog
If you would tattoo some flames on that head of yours ,you would look like Bam Bam Bigalow..lol...Much love brother thanks for the vids..
Glad you mentioned the flag. USA!
Rock Auto has a wix 57076 oil filter that fits your tractor for $6.78
Hayden Wilson amen!
Hayden Wilson wix is best!!
Cool thanks for the input!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer thanks for the awesome content
Great job 👌👏👌
I am a senior citizen, I can still get up and run the equipment but now I just send it all in for servicing.
Fram is ok but I prefer Wix. But that's just me. 😁
have you ever tried the fumoto oil plug replacement they make them for john deer check them out
I did the same research on tractors that you did.
Yea...we will be in the market for a cab tractor soon...now we have to deal with the darn emissions complications!
Thank you Josh!
Not sure brotha...check the dealership that sells your brand tractor..might could buy a new arm...thats my suggestion ...but I'm no expert at all
Fantastic video mate.
Trade up to a cab unit as soon as practical. Mrs. Stoney Ridge will thank you!
Thanks for video, snowing here again in Iowa.
Crazy spring weather!
Snowing here again in Michigan
Man that brings back memories
QUESTION: you changed the hidraulic oil filter but Not the hidraulic/ transmision oil itself? You just added some hidraulic oil. Why?
Over the past 2 years the fluid has leaked down from leaky cylinders hooked up...busted hoses and such....I've replaced nearly 8 gallons of new hydraulic oil so far in this system. So most of the fluid is new anyhow.
Josh you are a smart man and I think that you are going to be a hardworking farmer!
Thanks buddy
