HI FRIENDS, which one are we planning on trying!? And which ones did I miss, I swear I was looking EVERYWHERE for as many as I could get my hands on but they were surprisingly difficult to find.. If you drop what you like for a vegan roast, I can try and help you choose :) And if none of these are available in your area, I'll be making a vegan roast from scratch on 11/23, stay tuned!)
I’m at 3:01 right now but I hope you do the vegetarian plus vegan turkey with stuffing and gravy! If not can you try it sometime and I still wanna see the vegan jerky taste test! lol Edit: I’ve finished and I hope you try that turkey it’s very expensive though but I’d like to hear your review on it someday! Happy holidays to you and yours Merle!
I'm going to be trying the Trader Joe's one. I make my own stuffing, because we love stuffing (espeically my mom's recipe), plus I often find the stuffing in these products underwhelming. I also make my own gravy for the same reason, plus it's not enough for us to use if we want more.
I'm from Brazil and we have NONE of those options here. Our country eats turkey on Christmas feast, so it could be a good option to have those in hand.
Tofurky is still vegan-owned (instead of owned by a meat company) and they seem to treat their workers really well. They make everything in Hood River, OR and their facility is LEED certified! The founder is amazing, too.
Tofurky has at least 3 holiday roasts (4 if you include the ham). The one you made is just the roast, but they have the roast plus a pint of gravy, as well as the roast, plus a pint of gravy, plus brownies (they call that the Feast). They also sell the gravy by itself for @$5/pint. My students usually like the Tofurky gravy best of all the ones you made. Gardein used to private label their roast for Trader Joe's.
I think you could also totally get a can of cranberry sauce on the side! It would be pricier but not by much and you could control the ratio of cranberry:roast.
Was so happy to see the TJ’s roast back in stock this year just because it’s larger than the others and I like leftovers! Can’t wait to see your recipe!
I love the "ham" roast. Instead of pouring water in the bottom i always use apple juice and pineapple juice and I put pineapple slices on top of the roast, using tooth picks to hold them in place and bake it like that 😋
I've been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, and I LOVE Tofurkey! I look forward to it every year! ❤ I don't give a sh*t what anyone says. Most people get into their feelings when you reject the meat they're serving. I bake it covered with a little extra olive oil + vegetable broth marinade. It's tender and yummy!
The parent company of Field Roast (Greenleaf/Maple Leaf Foods) has done a lot of lobbying against whistleblowers within animal agriculture. I personally choose not to buy from them - no judgment either way, but figure people should know
“Daring” brand needs to come out with a roast. I think their chicken kind of compares to the turkey flavor people are looking for. My go to roast every year is the Trader Joe’s one though - the seitan is fine but the stuffing and gravy make it!
Also the brand “eat meati” would be good too! I just tried them today and it’s made of mycelium which is mushroom! The texture was insane soo meaty and high in protein I as shook!
Merle, this video made my day! I made my own homemade tofurkey for Canadian Friendsgiving last month and thought of you! It was a total hit. I think next time, I'll make a crispy "skin" out of sheets of rice paper like that drumstick recipe you made.
The cranberry hazelnut roast was a hit in my house a few years ago. We usually have split dinners. My sister and I will eat a vegan dinner with my parents and then my parents will eat a turkey dinner with our extended family on actual thanksgiving. My dad absolutely loved the cranberry hazelnut roast and I did too, but the past 2 years we've been making our own using the vegan cranberry stuffed turkey roast recipe from 86 Eats.
I was JUST scrolling on Whole Foods looking at ham alternatives! I’m pescatarian not vegan but I still try to do as many meat substitutes as I can! PERFECT TIMING!!!
Yay! It's a 'Merle Girl Busts Out In Song' kinda day!! I love those days :). Some of these look really, really good! Honestly, turkey isn't that good. There. I said it. It's just ok. It's all it's friends that make it a good meal, imho. I love all your videos but it's fun to have a ranking video mixed in! Love ya!!
I don't think the lack of cranberries would be a deterrent for me, because if it's being served with all the regular Thanksgiving sides, then I know there will be cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes! :D Thank you for the ranking video, my family isn't vegan, but we're always looking into options to reduce our meat consumption!
The Hazelnut Cranberry Roast has been my favorite for YEARS!!! 😍 I finally ventured out to purchase the Celebration Roast and the Tofurkey Ham Roast this year, BUT haven’t eaten them yet (they are still in the freezer)
quorn is the best. the texture is great, it’s genuinely juicy, & their line mimics poultry (turkey especially) very well. i’ve found that their vegetarian options are much tastier than their vegan counterpart though, that won’t work for everyone but it’s the best i’ve tried in 9 years.
omg, you should totally do a plant based instant gravy ranking, like all the ones you can get locally plus maybe order the Bisto ones from the UK because those are amazing
My youngest son-in-law, who is the best vegan cook in the family, always serves Tofurkey on Thanksgiving but he makes two gravies ahead of time. One, mushroom and, one onion. SO good!
I was looking for something good to serve my vegan guests and I think I'm going with the celebration roast. I always make most of my side items vegan to be inclusive so there will be stuffing to serve with it. Thanks for your reviews it helped me tremendously!
I am so so happy to hear that, Dana!! As long as they're okay with a bit of sweetness and you have a tasty gravy to serve it with they're going to LOVE it. it's delicious
I love the field roast celebration roast! It’s so delicious I bought 3 of them when Amazon fresh was having a sale on them back on late August or early September they were under $10 !! I’m kinda tempted to buy the tofurky ham this year as well I’ve never had it and it looks delicious. Thanks for reviewing all of them👍🏼
I’ve been watching you for quite a while, and I love your upbeat delivery, mixed in with a lot of humor and great ideas and information. Probably not sold on plant-based turkey. But it’s always fun to watch you.
Thanks for another entertaining and informative video, Merle. I love your tier-ranking videos! I’m one of those weirdos who truly enjoys the OG Tofurky, but we’ve done Field Roast (the “meatier” one, not the puff-pastry one) the past few years and I think it might be my steady favorite now.
I'm not even vegan or vegetarian but I will wild out on the field roast...roasts. The basic one with the stuffing inside, and the roast en croute is SO GOOD.... I'm so excited to eat one.
You probably already got an answer to this but I'm gonna say it anyway. The reason the first gravy was like applesauce was because it was frozen and "broke" when it was reheated. It's common for a starch based sauce specially if it doesn't have a stabilizer like guar gum added. If it was separate from the roast it could easily be reincorporated by whisking it up. This was entertaining, thank you
Thank you for biting the sodium bullet for us! I’ve tried the Gardein before but none of the others. Typically make a mushroom Wellington (using Vegan Richa’s recipe) for Thanksgiving. For my husband and I we do a Key West Christmas which typically means we are binge drinking for all meals, lol. (Not really all meals but way too many of them)
I have usually brined a block of tofu as my stand-in for turkey but this has made me at least want to consider looking for one of these products, so thanks for your input about them all. *high-fives-like-whoa*
It’s vegetarian, not vegan, but the Quorn meatless turkey roast is so good and very turkey-like. I roast it in an oven bag covered in olive oil and whatever blend of spices sounds good at the moment.
Thanks so much for testing all of the holiday roasts. I've yet to try any prepared roasts, mostly because of the price (I'm cheap, lol). I usually make either a nut roast, chickpea cutlets or a seitan roast for the holidays. Oh, and you have a lovely singing voice!
Where I am (London Canada) we only have the Gardein but they are 2 mini roasts per pack $10 a pack (each min serves 1 person, so only two servings per $10 pack). I’ve seen Tofurky but only once and I’ve never tried it. No other vegan roasts…that I’ve seen. Also, love the MCR reference (actually all the music references)❤. I do buy the Gardein minis like 5-6 bags (they only sell them at Thanksgiving and Christmas) and keep in my deep freezer for when I want an easy meal….I usually eat them with mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and green beans or greens or another veggie. I also like grainy mustard with the mini roasts.
I've seen the Field Roast ones here in Canada in a few stores. Pretty sure I've seen Tofurkey too. But then again I live in Vancouver, which is generally more vegan-friendly.
Oooh our reigning vegan queen is back!! Loves to see it!! I'm not American so...also never had a turkey roast, obviously, I'm vegetarian haha. So can't offer any personal experiences of my own on this matter haha....but! So good to have a ranking video tho, I've missed these!!! Hope to see more in the future! Also very excited to see your own recipe in a future video!! As always, love you and your content, and hope you have a nice holiday, ciao for now!!! ❤️❤️
I’ve got the Gardein “savory stuffed turk’y” which I believe is the same as their roast, but is three small individual roasts instead of one large one. Since it’s just me eating it I figured this was the best option. But this video has me really wanting that Celebration Roast.
I can’t wait to see the roast you make. Right now I am firming the patties in the freezer for the future riff on a Wellington I want to take for Thanksgiving. I’m going to cook a couple of the patties to see how it holds together and how it tastes!!
I will stand behind the gardein roast all day. I dont really eat cause it reminds me of turkey, it just tastes damn good and reminds me of their chicken which I love! but I definitely make my own gravy haha. Great video Merle!!
I love the Trader Joes Vegan Turkey! Even though I live in Canada now, I always make a special trip down to TJ's around the holidays to get this roast.
❗️Trick Allert❗️I’ve tried them all. And I’ve got a trick for everyone, slice your roast then pan fry them and reassemble them on the platter if you want to make it pretty. One more trick, we also cube any kind of Tofurky and put the skewers over the fire in the fireplace. We love, love it that way. As far as the sliced ones, our faves are Tofurky and Field Roast.
The is another one from Whole Foods that I tried that came with two roast that was amazing. I think I am trying the ham this year and I am so glad you reviewed it 🥰 love ya
I don't know if they've changed it since I last had it, but I used to LOVE the field roast "en croute" one. Super flavourful and moist... even my in-laws liked it!
I always get two of the field roast ones with the crispy outside to have for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I make my own onion and mushroom gravy and its always amazing.
I’ve only ever had the tofurkey roast which was fine; I’ve always been curious about the field roast ones but never boughtt one. This year I’m getting the Herbivorous Butcher turkey meal kit they make every year, I’m looking forward to trying it.
Can’t get most of these in my country and we also don’t do thanksgiving but here I am watching nonetheless! I LOVED the impromptu lalalalalabamba call and response btw 😂❤
The Hazelnut and Cranberry is my bf and mine favorite holiday roast option... Also, field roast does a smaller sage and garlic roast which is great for a week night dinner
@merleoneal have you had butler soy curls yet? It's just extruded whole soy beans so it's not ultra processed, but I'm pretty sure there's no bad ways to have it. It's so tasty
I love the cranberry roast, it doesn’t weird me out the way some fake meat roasts do 😂. I’m trying out seitan recipes to make my own more savory roast this year. Loved the video!
I guess I just found out who actually likes cranberries (or apples) in their stuffing! I hate having that sweet stuff in mine - give me the classic savory stuffing. I would give the Tofurky extra points for keeping the fruit out of it!
...i absolutely adore the tofurkey h`am roast, and hoard whenever the after the holiday sales hit, i make an a-MAZING ham and new potato creamy soup (humble vegan breag) served with crispy h`am crispies, that i make with the 'tails' of the h`am chopped fine and fried in a sauce pan wit a tiny touch of liquid hickory smoke and avocado oil and homemade beer bread..and lots of but`tr... thanks for sharing your thoughts on all the holiday roasts... ☮️&🌱's -tracee (LeRoy's wife)
As a non-vegan, I honestly saw the Tofurky as the one I'm most tempted to try! It has a decent amount of the "meat" to stuffing ratio and the texture was the most appealing to me. The ones that look like they're logs of bread or stuffing like the Field Roast and Trader Joe's options were the least appealing based on aesthetics. If I saw those at Thanksgiving, I would try them if someone told me it was good, but I would gravitate to other options before those. I might need to buy one of these and give it try this holiday! It's also pretty cost effective if I ever need to make a Holiday meal for 1 or 2 since it's way cheaper than buying a turkey breast where I am.
Thanks for doing this comparison! I tried TJ's last week ('cause I buy most of my food there), but I tried to speed up the cooking because it wasn't fully thawed inside after 24+ hours. I microwaved it a few minutes, then roasted uncovered hoping to reduce the time needed, and the breading layer came out tough. I'm trying another one covered as directed. I thought the flavor was very good, just like a good herbed stuffing. My family thought the texture was kinda cake-like. I'm going to look around for that non-ginger Field Roast.
I LOOOVE the Trader Joe's one! I make my own gravy though. And I'm not even really vegetarian anymore (80/20 if I'm being honest) but I still get it around the holidays!
So glad you’re doing this taste test, hosting a small thanksgiving for non vegans. I love your sweater! I grew up going to Griffith Park. Where can I purchase a sweater like that?
Oh my gosh! Which vegan roast are you going to buy for them? I'm invested. And honestly, this was a second-hand sweater that was given to me by soneone who wasn't wearing it anymore (I try to get second-hand everything when it comes to clothes) - I think originally its from Pacsun lol - but I also LOVE Griffith
I’ve had Tofurky for the past 2 years and will probably do it again this year. It makes it so I don’t end up in the kitchen all day long. I roast it with potatoes, carrots, onion, and maybe celery. All in a Dutch oven. It’s the perfect amount for 2 people with only some leftovers. The kind we get comes with gravy in the box. I think you choose which box you want gravy or none. I just get the premade gravy box and add diced mushrooms to it.
Thanks- I was just trying to decide what I was going to get this year- I was thinking the field and roast, but now I’m torn because the Trader Joe’s one sounds good 😋❤
We make ham sandwiches with just ham and mustard. We also use the ham for Hawaiian pizza! I want to try the field roast though! We’re a Quorn family, so it would be nice to find something more turkey-ey!
Tofurky roast is great in a sandwich the next day. I like to switch things up but I like the texture of the Tofurkey best - Field Roast is my Christmas go to roast. I get cranberry relish on the side. And as already mentioned, there is a box that included gravy. Add a pile of mashed potatoes and green beans and life is good!
I've had the Field Roast Cranberry Hazelnut Roast and I had single serving Gardein roasts. I preferred the taste of the Field Roast, but the single serving Gardein ones are really convenient if you are the only vegan in your family and also have limited oven time. You can also bake another one fresh for leftovers.
These all look amazing! I might re-try making a seitan roast this year. Last time was my first try and the result wasn't that good. I should really follow a recipe this time XD
I've not tried any of these yet!! Thank you for reviewing! Idk if i could get over the look of cat food as a cat parent. I have a weak tummy 😅 and the wet cat food makes me gag every time. I like you bring up the salt... that's pretty important.

Tofurkey was sold to Morinaga foods, a Japanese dairy company.
I absolutely LOVE the ham and I hoard them when they start showing up in stores so if you can't find one, it's because of me!
A holiday sighting with the iconic ham smuggler, people, life is good. Your secret is safe with me - I really wanna try the ham in split pea soup
I hoard them too!! They are so good! Sometimes I make a fake ham and bean soup! Highly recommend!

I was pleased with the Gardein one too! I have to say, across the board these were much better than expected!
I know, it’s more work but totally worth it. Trust me.
Get the tofurkey feast that includes gravy and brownie. Both are can’t miss cravables!
Annoyingly, this was the only one a available in my area!! But I'll have to try it next year!
so comforting and informative as always
Comforting and informative is all I could hope for
I'm not vegan, but I am eating a lot less meat than I used to. I love the TJ's roast. I'm very intrigued by that ham!
Where all my POTS friends at who are excited to ingest all the sodium with me over the holidays? 😂
🙋 I am one of the few who was happy to hear the amount of sodium in these, love me some salt 🧂
Loved this, thanks Merle! Also really liked the Whole Foods roast I had last year.
Adding that to my list
thanks for making such a fun and cosy video! Super hyped for the video on making your own roast as well
Aw I'm so happy it was cozy and fun- that's always the dream combo :)
I always get two of the field roast ones with the crispy outside to have for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I make my own onion and mushroom gravy and its always amazing.
Thank you for trying all of these products. I'm looking forward to trying them for myself. Also, I love it when you sing!
Aw thank you! Which one are you most excited to try
Thank you for the interesting ranking video, and I hope you have a lovely time.
I’ve only ever had the tofurkey roast which was fine; I’ve always been curious about the field roast ones but never boughtt one. This year I’m getting the Herbivorous Butcher turkey meal kit they make every year, I’m looking forward to trying it.
So glad you did this. There are so many options now (which is good) but it can be intimidating. Sometimes it is just better to make your own.
my hope was to make this so you don't have to skyrocket your sodium count and spend a ton of money to figure out what's what!
@@MerleONeal Absolutely! Big thanks from all of us!
Your videos are so comforting
That's always the goal!!!🥰
Can’t get most of these in my country and we also don’t do thanksgiving but here I am watching nonetheless! I LOVED the impromptu lalalalalabamba call and response btw 😂❤
I had a roast chicken last year from a brand called Grater Goods. It was yum, it had a nice apricot glaze. (I'm also from NZ)
Been years since I’ve tried these .. I usually just eat everything else … thanks for the reminder!
The Hazelnut and Cranberry is my bf and mine favorite holiday roast option... Also, field roast does a smaller sage and garlic roast which is great for a week night dinner
The Fieldroast cranberry and hazelnut roast is my go to… I love it with either cranberry sauce or gravy. So good.
its so fancy and sooo goooood
Great video! Whenever I use the gravy that comes with a Gardein item I add Tamari or liquid aminos to give it color and flavor.
@merleoneal have you had butler soy curls yet? It's just extruded whole soy beans so it's not ultra processed, but I'm pretty sure there's no bad ways to have it. It's so tasty
seeing your dog and cat cuddling each other is just too much for my heart!!!! do you just sit and stare at them cuddling?? i would! eeeee
All of the time- they keep me sane hahahaha
I love the cranberry roast, it doesn’t weird me out the way some fake meat roasts do 😂. I’m trying out seitan recipes to make my own more savory roast this year. Loved the video!
I guess I just found out who actually likes cranberries (or apples) in their stuffing! I hate having that sweet stuff in mine - give me the classic savory stuffing. I would give the Tofurky extra points for keeping the fruit out of it!
This was incredibly helpful. I'm still debating if I should just buy one or make one
...i absolutely adore the tofurkey h`am roast, and hoard whenever the after the holiday sales hit, i make an a-MAZING ham and new potato creamy soup (humble vegan breag) served with crispy h`am crispies, that i make with the 'tails' of the h`am chopped fine and fried in a sauce pan wit a tiny touch of liquid hickory smoke and avocado oil and homemade beer bread..and lots of but`tr...
thanks for sharing your thoughts on all the holiday roasts...

I think the second Field Roast is a play on a vegetarian Wellington.
Indeed it is
As a non-vegan, I honestly saw the Tofurky as the one I'm most tempted to try!
The cranberry hazelnut roast is my favourite! I get one... or two.... or five .... every year!
hahhaa yeah, I'm excited to have my mom try that one- she doesn't like imitation meat and I think she'd love it
Same. I’ve already bought 3 of them 🤤
Oh some homemade cranberry sauce would be delicious with the last tofurky option or any really 😋
ALL OF THESE WERE MISSING CRANBERRY SAUCE. honestly that's my favorite thing at the holidays
I LOVE the little hams. I could eat the whole thing like a candied apple lol
it really IS like a candied apple! I truly wanna try it in split pea soup
I LOOOVE the Trader Joe's one! I make my own gravy though. And I'm not even really vegetarian anymore (80/20 if I'm being honest) but I still get it around the holidays!
I’m not Vegan I just love your videos and your singing voice is amazing
omg thank you
So glad you’re doing this taste test, hosting a small thanksgiving for non vegans.
I SO wish I could find a gluten-free one made of jackfruit or soy :((( love these ranking-style videos!!
Thanks- I was just trying to decide what I was going to get this year- I was thinking the field and roast, but now I’m torn because the Trader Joe’s one sounds good 😋❤
I would say it entirely depends on whether you're going to make your own stuffing! - if you are, spring for the Field roast, if not, trader joes!!
@@MerleONeal Trader Joe’s it is then!😂( It’s just for me- everyone else eats what they call” normal “ food. I just call it unhealthy!lol)
We make ham sandwiches with just ham and mustard. We also use the ham for Hawaiian pizza! I want to try the field roast though! We’re a Quorn family, so it would be nice to find something more turkey-ey!
omg using the ham for hawaiian pizza is GENIUS!!
Tofurky roast is great in a sandwich the next day. I like to switch things up but I like the texture of the Tofurkey best - Field Roast is my Christmas go to roast. I get cranberry relish on the side. And as already mentioned, there is a box that included gravy. Add a pile of mashed potatoes and green beans and life is good!
i'm from europe, i'm sooo jealous of all the vegan options, we don't even have anything similar to that, it all looked super delicious
It's vegetarian, not vegan, but the Quorn roast is my absolute favorite. The field roast sage and garlic roast is also delish!
I'm surprised that nobody is upset by the fact that TOFUrkey is not tofu, but seitan 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
The seitan has tofu blended into it.
Hail seitan
Wait, why would someone be upset by that?
❤ love your videos Merle like always, 🇿🇦
Aw thank you!!!
Tofurky has a version that comes with gravy and it's really really good!
My damn grocery store was hiding things from me
Big Mountain has a plant based roast out this year, and I am super excited to try it! it is also soy and gluten free :)
These all look amazing! I might re-try making a seitan roast this year. Last time was my first try and the result wasn't that good. I should really follow a recipe this time XD
I’ll have one for ya on the 23rd!
It's TIIIIIIIiiiMMMMMEEEE ( insert Mariah jokes here)
Ah Tofurkey, reminds me of Gilmore Girls. Glad you brought back the ranking! I missed them ☺️
Soon enough you just might try my homemade vegan roast...
@ don’t tempt me with a good time!
I've not tried any of these yet!! Thank you for reviewing! Idk if i could get over the look of cat food as a cat parent. I have a weak tummy 😅 and the wet cat food makes me gag every time. I like you bring up the salt... that's pretty important.
